  • The Territorialisation of the Grocery Shopper: eco-ethical asceticism and environmental nostalgia.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Territories, Environments, Governance: Explorations in Territoriology. - London : Routledge. - 9781032051666 ; , s. 153-173
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter we focus on the territorialisation of grocery shoppers and their routes and routines in the city district Western Harbour in Malmö. The Western Harbour is an urban area close to the sea that was built to afford a sustainable and ecologically-friendly way of life. Here we are interested in how the mundane territorialised role of the grocery shopper has evolved among the inhabitants of this area, as well as in the impact of the design and aesthetics of the built environment on this process of territorialisation. The study is primarily based on six residents’ experiences of shopping, where routines and routes have been investigated through semi-structured interviews supplemented by participant-produced photographs and captions. Based on the findings, we discuss how eco-ethical and ascetic practices are developed in relation to the environment, as well as the role of different aspects and feelings of environmental nostalgia in stabilising the peculiar territorial role and sort of the grocery shopper.

  • Constructions and consequences of power-full Svalbard imaginaries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2021.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Svalbard’s ascending role as a Norwegian flagship pristine wilderness, attractive adventurescape and aspiring Arctic sustainable exemplar is challenged by its ongoing and historical dependence on coal as both an energy source and a foundation for Norwegian presence. In this paper we take the site and figure of an old coal power plant, last operational in 1983 as our central focus. Having been the Norwegian capital of Longyearbyen’s main source of power from 1920, the old powerplant manifests how imaginaries once driven by coal today are subjects of investigation and exposition. Plans of turning the power plant into “an industrial monument, cultural arena and a visitor attraction” raise questions as to what stories the plant will be enrolled in telling and how these will be related and incorporated into geopolitical and cultural imaginaries of a ‘greener’ Svalbard. We draw upon our collective, multi-disciplinary ethnographic engagements with Svalbard, ongoing discussions on the development of the tourist attraction, and an analysis of films commissioned by the stated funded coal company, Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani in the 1960s and 1970s. This provides a historical contrast to the planned decommissioning of the current coal-fired plant in favour of a cleaner solution, with a time when Svalbard’s settlements were still functioning and imagined foremost as coal company towns. We critically explore questions of representation, temporality and technological agency in the shaping of Svalbard imaginaries and ask how this connects with and is part of global reconfigurations of nature-capital relations.

  • The political choices of emigrants voting in home country elections : A socio-political analysis of the electoral behaviour of Bolivian external voters
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Migration Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2049-5838 .- 2049-5846. ; 3:2, s. 155-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What variables influence the electoral behaviour of citizens voting in home country elections from abroad? Despite the growing interest of migration scholars for the topic of external voting, this question remains largely unanswered. Basing ourselves on the existing political science literature on electoral behaviour and on the migration literature on immigrants' participation in host country politics, we isolate different hypotheses that explain emigrants' preferences in home country politics. We then build four models of voters based on these hypotheses: the social group voter, the ideological voter, the interest-driven voter, and the transnational voter. In the second part of the paper, we verify the validity of these models using the results of a survey carried out with Bolivian emigrants who took part in the 2009 Bolivian presidential election from abroad. Overall, this article identifies the drivers of immigrant transnational political participation and contributes to current debates on social remittances.

  • Kilometre-scale simulations over Fennoscandia reveal a large loss of tundra due to climate warming
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 21:5, s. 1093-1116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Fennoscandian boreal and mountain regions harbour a wide range of vegetation types, from boreal forest to high alpine tundra and barren soils. The area is facing a rise in air temperature above the global average and changes in temperature and precipitation patterns. This is expected to alter the Fennoscandian vegetation composition and change the conditions for areal land use such as forestry, tourism and reindeer husbandry. In this study we used a unique high-resolution (3 km) climate scenario with considerable warming resulting from strongly increasing carbon dioxide emissions to investigate how climate change can alter the vegetation composition, biodiversity and availability of suitable reindeer forage. Using a dynamical vegetation model, including a new implementation of potential reindeer grazing, resulted in simulated vegetation maps of unprecedented high resolution for such a long time period and spatial extent. The results were evaluated at the local scale using vegetation inventories and for the whole area against satellite-based vegetation maps. A deeper analysis of vegetation shifts related to statistics of threatened species was performed in six “hotspot” areas containing records of rare and threatened species. In this high-emission scenario, the simulations show dramatic shifts in the vegetation composition, accelerating at the end of the century. Alarmingly, the results suggest the southern mountain alpine region in Sweden will be completely covered by forests at the end of the 21st century, making preservation of many rare and threatened species impossible. In the northern alpine regions, most vegetation types will persist but shift to higher elevations with reduced areal extent, endangering vulnerable species. Simulated potential for reindeer grazing indicates latitudinal differences, with higher potential in the south in the current climate. In the future these differences will diminish, as the potentials will increase in the north, especially for the summer grazing grounds. These combined results suggest significant shifts in vegetation composition over the present century for this scenario, with large implications for nature conservation, reindeer husbandry and forestry.

  • Gazing at Pudong - 'With a Drink in Your Hand' : Time Travel, Mediation, and Multisensuous Immersion in the Future City of Shanghai
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Senses and Society. - Oxford : Berg. - 1745-8927. ; 2:2, s. 155-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Chinese mega city of Shanghai is currently undergoing a radical restructuring of its infrastructure and urban fabric and aspires to become a future city and a world center. This article delineates an encapsulation of a future gaze in the city among cosmopolitan visitors, mediated through travel reporting, travel guides and expatriate websites. Shanghai is a multi-sensuous and highly engaging geography. The city invokes a future gaze which, in contrast with the alleged detachment of the tourist gaze, has to be interpreted in terms of an immersion of the whole body, and in relation to acts of drinking and eating in the chronotopes of nostalgic dwelling – the mansion garden and the restaurant. In addition, futurology in Shanghai is dependent upon a craze for history and as travelers engage with and perform a collective memory of the Golden Age of the twenties and thirties, the city enacts a specific experience of time travel.  This article shows how analyzing the intersensorium may contribute to a more critical evaluation of how visitors make sense of and contribute to the transformation in the city and further probes how sensory response, sentiment, memory and mediation work together.

  • ’We See America’ : Mediatized and Mobile Gazes in Swedish Post-war Travelogues
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International journal of cultural studies. - London : Sage. - 1367-8779 .- 1460-356X. ; 7:3, s. 321-342
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I explore the many different meanings of the mediatized meeting with New York (how gazing at the Manhattan Skyline “felt like being at the movies”) from the point of departure of how traveling Swedes – mainly male, middle aged and of middle- and upper class backgrounds – made sense of America, in travel writing from 1945-1963. By analyzing the pivotal arrival scenes in these narratives in conjunction with the accompanying illustrations, I investigate the kinds of gazes that were called upon. I set out by arguing that their gazes reinforced a kind of “medial attitude” which resonated with strong traditions of traveling and visualizing the other. But the article ultimately shows that when they approached the new world, experiences of mediatization and movement also invoked a range of other viewing possibilities that bore witness to their stance being first and foremost that of ambivalence, which implied that their gaze, their masculinity and their authority were set in motion.

  • A Nationalist Contradiction : Homonationalism and Nationalist Anti-LGBTQ Politics and Activism in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Homonationalism and nationalist anti-LGBTQ politics and activism are two geographical and historical processes which contradict each other, as the latter frequently targets the former (and vice versa). We see this contradiction in the global far-right attacks on LGBTQ people, rights, and spaces through discourse, politics, and violence, including in nation-states frequently thought of as progressively pushing LGBTQ rights forward through national legislation and shifting values among the population from homophobic to “LGBTQ friendly” (i.e. homonationalism). While this contradiction may be thought of as indicating flaws in linearly progressing democracies (a so-called “backlash” to LGBTQ rights), this thesis instead examines if and how these polar movements are unified through the struggle over the role of sexuality in nationalism. It does so by examining how nationalist anti-LGBTQ politics and activism have contributed to an evolving homonationalist discourse in Sweden. Drawing upon qualitative analyses of neo-Nazi and far-right anti-LGBTQ attacks and oppositions to LGBTQ spaces between 2016 and 2020, and responses to them, the thesis analyses the ways in which state hegemony and nationalist myths about an LGBTQ-inclusive Swedish state are re-articulated in different responses to anti-LGBTQ nationalism. The thesis consists of two parts: the first is a theoretical introduction to sexuality as constructed through nationalism, which also provides an outline of the thesis’ methodology. The second part consists of five research articles which together analyse events of nationalist sexual politics in Sweden and their connections to homonationalist discourse. The two first articles examine the economic and political contexts for Swedish homonationalism and nationalist anti-LGBTQ politics and activism. The third, fourth, and fifth articles analyse concrete nationalist anti-LGBTQ political and activist events and how they have affected and been shaped by (homo)nationalist discourse, policing, and legislation..
