  • Towards the Limits of Nonlinearity Compensation for Fiber-Optic Channels
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The performance of long-haul coherent optical systems is fundamentally limited by fiber nonlinearity and its interplay with chromatic dispersion and noise. Due to nonlinearity, the signal propagating through the fiber interacts with itself and with the noise generated from the inline amplifiers. This process results in nonlinearinter-symbol interference (NISI) and nonlinear signal–noise interaction (NSNI). The state-of-the-art algorithm for combating these impairments is digital backpropagation (DBP) and is typically used as a benchmark against other detectors. However, DBP compensates only for NISI, while studies have revealed that NSNI limits the capacity of the coherent optical communications. The goal of the thesis isto use a methodical approach to develop a near-optimal nonlinearity compensation algorithm that also accounts for NSNI. This allows us to identify the fundamental performance limits of the fiber-optic channel.Starting from the maximum a posteriori principle, we develop an algorithm called stochastic digital backpropagation (SDBP) using the framework of factor graphs. In contrast to DBP, SDBP accounts not only for NISI but also for NSNI. To account for the effects of pulse shaping, we propose three variants of SDBP inthis thesis. In the first variant, the output of SDBP is processed using a matched filter (MF) followed by sampling, and decisions are taken on a symbol-by-symbol (SBS) basis. In terms of symbol error rate (SER), SBS-SDBP has better performance than DBP. However, residual memory remains after performing the MF asthe MF operation need not be the optimal processing for the fiber-optic channel. This is accounted for in the second variant of SDBP, where the Viterbi algorithm is used after the MF to compensate for the residual memory. The SER of this variant is further improved compared to SBS-SDBP. In the third variant of SDBP,we use Gaussian message passing to account for the effect of pulse shaping, instead of using the MF. The SER of this third variant of SDBP is better than SBS-SDBP. For estimating the achievable throughput in a typical transmission system, mutual information is a better metric than error rate for soft-decision coded optical systems. We show that SDBP can be used as a tool to compute lower bounds on the mutual information, which are tighter than those obtained using DBP.

  • Channel Estimation Errors and Their Impact on Irregular Array Performance in Massive MIMO
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation, ISAP 2022. ; , s. 509-510
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the impact of imperfect channel state information (CSI) on the array antenna layout design in massive multiple-input multiple-output applications. The analysis is based on channel estimation errors resulting from the least squares estimation algorithm in pure line-of-sight channels. We show that signal to interference-plus-noise ratio gains traditionally anticipated with irregular layouts, as compared to regular ones under the assumption of perfect CSI, vanish in case of CSI imperfections for the considered scenario.

  • Presence through actions : theories, concepts, and implementations
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During face-to-face meetings, humans use multimodal information, including verbal information, visual information, body language, facial expressions, and other non-verbal gestures. In contrast, during computer-mediated-communication (CMC), humans rely either on mono-modal information such as text-only, voice-only, or video-only or on bi-modal information by using audiovisual modalities such as video teleconferencing. Psychologically, the difference between the two lies in the level of the subjective experience of presence, where people perceive a reduced feeling of presence in the case of CMC. Despite the current advancements in CMC, it is still far from face-to-face communication, especially in terms of the experience of presence. This thesis aims to introduce new concepts, theories, and technologies for presence design where the core is actions for creating presence. Thus, the contribution of the thesis can be divided into a technical contribution and a knowledge contribution. Technically, this thesis details novel technologies for improving presence experience during mediated communication (video teleconferencing). The proposed technologies include action robots (including a telepresence mechatronic robot (TEBoT) and a face robot), embodied control techniques (head orientation modeling and virtual reality headset based collaboration), and face reconstruction/retrieval algorithms. The introduced technologies enable action possibilities and embodied interactions that improve the presence experience between the distantly located participants. The novel setups were put into real experimental scenarios, and the well-known social, spatial, and gaze related problems were analyzed. The developed technologies and the results of the experiments led to the knowledge contribution of this thesis. In terms of knowledge contribution, this thesis presents a more general theoretical conceptual framework for mediated communication technologies. This conceptual framework can guide telepresence researchers toward the development of appropriate technologies for mediated communication applications. Furthermore, this thesis also presents a novel strong concept – presence through actions - that brings in philosophical understandings for developing presence- related technologies. The strong concept - presence through actions is an intermediate-level knowledge that proposes a new way of creating and developing future 'presence artifacts'. Presence- through actions is an action-oriented phenomenological approach to presence that differs from traditional immersive presence approaches that are based (implicitly) on rationalist, internalist views.

  • Estimation of Phase Noise in Oscillators with Colored Noise Sources
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Letters. - 1558-2558 .- 1089-7798. ; 17:11, s. 2160-2163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this letter we study the design of algorithms for estimation of phase noise (PN) with colored noise sources. A soft-input maximum a posteriori PN estimator and a modified soft-input extended Kalman smoother are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithms are compared against those studied in the literature, in terms of mean square error of the PN estimation, and symbol error rate of the considered communication system. The comparisons show that considerable performance gains can be achieved by designing estimators that employ correct knowledge of the PN statistics.

  • Phase Noise in Communication Systems--Modeling, Compensation, and Performance Analysis
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The continuous increase in demand for higher data rates due to applications with massive number of users motivates the design of faster and more spectrum efficient communication systems. In theory, the current communication systems must be able to operate close to Shannon capacity bounds. However, real systems perform below capacity limits, mainly because of considering too idealistic or simplistic assumptions on the imperfections such as channel estimation errors or hardware impairments. Oscillator phase noise is one of the hardware impairments that is becoming a limiting factor in high data rate digital communication systems. Phase noise severely limits the performance of systems that employ dense constellations. Moreover, the level of phase noise (at a given off-set frequency) increases with carrier frequency, which means that the problem of phase noise may be worse in systems with high carrier frequencies. The focus of this thesis is on: i) finding accurate statistical models of phase noise, ii) designing efficient algorithms to mitigate the effect of this phenomenon, iii) analyzing the Shannon capacity of the single and multiple-antenna communication systems affected by phase noise. First, a new statistical model of phase noise valid for free-running and phase-locked-loop-stabilized oscillators is provided. The new model incorporates white and colored noise sources inside the oscillator circuitry. The new model is used in order to connect the performance of phase-noise affected communication systems, in terms of error-vector-magnitude, with oscillator phase-noise measurements. The results can be used by hardware and frequency generator designers to better understand the impairing effects of phase noise on the system performance and optimize their design criteria respectively. Second, the proposed phase-noise model is employed for estimation of phase noise generated from white and colored noise sources. A soft-input maximum a posteriori phase noise estimator and a modified soft-input extended Kalman smoother are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithms is compared against that of those studied in the literature, in terms of mean square error of phase noise estimation, and symbol error rate of the considered communication system. The comparisons show that considerable performance gains can be achieved by designing estimators that employ correct knowledge of the phase-noise statistics. The performance improvement is more significant in low-SNR or low-pilot density scenarios. Finally, the capacity of single and multiple antenna communication systems affected by phase noise is investigated. For the SISO Wiener phase-noise channel, upper and lower bounds on the capacity are obtained, which are tight for a wide range of SNR values. In addition, a family of input distributions, which result in a tight lower bound are introduced. The high-SNR capacity of single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and multiple-output single-input (MISO) phase-noise channels for two different oscillator configurations is investigated. The provided analysis shows that driving antennas at the base station by separate (independent) local oscillators is beneficial for the SIMO channel compared to driving all the antennas with a common oscillator. In contrast, larger gains are achieved for the MISO channel when a common oscillator is employed.

  • Optimal Design of Energy-Efficient HetNets: Joint Precoding and Load Balancing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications. - : IEEE. - 1550-3607. - 9781467364324 ; , s. 4664-4669
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the downlink of a heterogeneous network, where multiple base stations (BSs) can serve the users by non-coherent multiflow beamforming. We assume imperfect channel state information at both BSs and users. The objective is to jointly optimize the precoding, load balancing, and BS operation mode (active or sleep) for improving the energy efficiency of the network. The considered problem is to minimize the weighted total power consumption (both circuit power and dynamic transmit power), while satisfying per-user quality of service constraints and per-BS transmit power constraints. This problem is non-convex, but we prove that for each combination of BS modes, the considered problem has a hidden convexity structure. Thus, the global optimal solution is obtained by an exhaustive search over all possible BS mode combinations. Furthermore, by iterative convex approximations of the non-convex power consumption functions, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to obtain a local optimal solution with low complexity. Simulation results illustrate that our proposed algorithms significantly reduce the total power consumption, compared to the scheme where all BSs are continuously active. This implies that putting a BS into sleep mode by proper load balancing is an important solution for energy savings in heterogeneous networks.

  • What Can Machine Learning Teach Us about Communications
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory - Proceedings. - 2157-8095. ; 15 January 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid improvements in machine learning over the past decade are beginning to have far-reaching effects. For communications, engineers with limited domain expertise can now use off-the-shelf learning packages to design high-performance systems based on simulations. Prior to the current revolution in machine learning, the majority of communication engineers were quite aware that system parameters (such as filter coefficients) could be learned using stochastic gradient descent. It was not at all clear, however, that more complicated parts of the system architecture could be learned as well. In this paper, we discuss the application of machine-learning techniques to two communications problems and focus on what can be learned from the resulting systems. We were pleasantly surprised that the observed gains in one example have a simple explanation that only became clear in hindsight. In essence, deep learning discovered a simple and effective strategy that had not been considered earlier.

  • Mark ratio modulation over pulse position modulation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Optical Fiber Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-9912 .- 1068-5200. ; 57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Orthogonal modulation superimposes non-amplitude-modulated signals on Manchester coded or pulse position modulated amplitude shift keying (ASK) signals, allowing two traffic flows with different bit rates to be modulated on the same wavelength channel, and hence improving spectrum efficiency. Inspired by the orthogonal modulation, this paper proposes a novel modulation format, i.e., mark ratio modulation over pulse position modulation (PPM), which utilizes the mark ratio difference between the PPM symbols and the inverse PPM symbols to deliver an overlaid signal. Better than traditional orthogonal modulation, in the mark ratio modulation over PPM, both low-speed and high-speed traffic flows are modulated by ASK with no need to sacrifice the extinction ratio, while keeping the reception simple and easy. According to theoretical analysis and test, we found 4PPM is a good option, which can balance the trade-off between the PPM signal's effective bit rate and the mark ratio modulated signal's quality.

  • Decentralized Training of 3D Lane Detection with Automatic Labeling Using HD Maps
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference. - 1550-2252.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To have competent 3D lane detection for real-world driving, a massive amount of data from all over the world is needed, but data collection and manual annotation are costly and time-consuming. The diversity of data collected by developmental cars might still be limited compared to the data collected by a large fleet of customer cars. Federated learning enables training models on edge without transferring data out of devices. However, training supervised learning tasks at the edge is directly tied to having access to high-quality labels, which is limited at the edge. In this paper, we propose a fully automatic method to generate 3D lane labels at the edge using a pre-recorded HD map to enable the federated training of the 3D lane detection model. As a reference, a semi-automatic method is applied for creating a 3D-lane dataset used as ground truth. Our experimental results show that the model can achieve comparable performance when training on the same dataset in both a centralized and a decentralized manner. And the models trained on semi-automatic labeled datasets slightly outperform those trained on fully-automatically labeled datasets. This study shows that a well-performing 3D lane detection model can be trained in a supervised and fully decentralized manner, and most importantly, data privacy at the edge is guaranteed.

  • Analysis of nonlinear low-noise amplifiers in massive MIMO base stations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 51st Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers. - 1058-6393. - 9781538618233 - 9781538618240 ; , s. 285-289
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Because of the large number of antennas at the base station, the power consumption and cost of the low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) can be substantial. Therefore, we investigate the feasibility of inexpensive, power efficient LNAs, which inherently are less linear. To characterize the nonlinear distortion, we describe the LNAs using a polynomial model, which allows for the derivation of the second-order statistics of the received signal and the distortion. A massive MIMO system that serves one user in line-of-sight is studied. It is shown that the distortion from the LNAs combines coherently and that the SINR of the symbol estimates therefore is limited by the linearity of the LNAs. Furthermore, the impact of a strong transmitter in the adjacent frequency band is investigated. The second-order statistics show how the power from that transmission leaks into the main band and interferes with the symbol estimates.
