- Several technological challenges delay the adoption of electrified powertrains in the heavy-duty transport sector. For fuel-cell hybrid electric trucks, key issues include slow cold start, reduced cooling power during high ambient temperatures, and uncertainties regarding durability. In addition, the engineers must handle the complexity of the system. In this article, a Matlab/Simulink library is introduced, which has been developed to aid engineers in the design and optimization of energy management systems and strategies of this complex system that consider mechanical, electrochemical, and thermal energy flows. The library is introduced through five example vehicle models, and through case studies that highlight the various kinds of analysis that can be performed using the provided models. All library code is open source, open for commercial use, and runs in Matlab/Simulink without any need for external libraries.

Branschen använder årligen ca 3 TWh och delar av den är mycket energiintensiv, 30-40% av kostnaderna för produktion av primäralúminium är energi.

Circular economy running in circles? : A discourse analysis of shifts in ideas of circularity in Swedish environmental policy

- Circular economy has in recent years been promoted as a promising alternative to unsustainable production systems. By comparing two different concepts of circularity, circular economy and eco-cycle, which had political momentum in Sweden during the 2010s and the 1990s respectively, the paper shows how issues of responsibility, politics, limits, space and sustainability, and even the shape of the circle itself have changed over the turn of the millennium. Based on a discourse analysis of two policy reports on the concepts, a strong and a weak interpretation of circularity are identified. A weak circularity, represented in circular economy, is presumably without limits. Secondary resources shall only complement the growing extraction of primary resources, while the responsibility for circularity is handed over from the state to individuals and entrepreneurs. A weak circularity excludes social responsibility and tends to reinforce unequal power relations. With a strong conceptualization of circularity, on the other hand, the producers and the state are responsible for creating a closed, material loop limited in size and space, based on the principle of fair distribution of resources. Drawing on the findings, alternative directions of circulation are called for, which are more globally oriented and socially inclusive.

Cirkulära Avtal : Hur kan avtal och certifikat öka användningen av sekundära resurser?

- Cirkulära avtal är överenskommelser mellan aktörer i syfte att öka cirkulationen av avfallsbaserade resurser, som specificerar under vilka förutsättningar resursen får cirkuleras.Denna rapport undersöker för- och nackdelar med olika typer av cirkulära avtal för återvinning i Europa, för att sedan analysera vilka problem avtalen löser och inte löser på marknader för avfall, och vilka problem de skulle kunna lösa i en svensk kontext.För att studera cirkulära avtal har tre olika europeiska fall studerats; Gröna avtal i Nederländerna, Kvalitetsprotokoll i Storbritannien och Differentierade krav i Danmark. Dessa avtal skiljer sig åt till exempel genom att reglera olika delar av ett materials livscykel, till exempel dess ursprung eller tilltänkta användning.Gemensamt är att avtalen tar särskild hänsyn till avfallets speciella komplexitet med avseende på till exempel förekomsten av farliga ämnen. Dessutom kan cirkulära avtal användas för att fördela de kostnader och nyttor som uppstår i handeln med avfallsbaserade resurser på ett sätt som bättre passar den cirkulära ekonomin. Den funktionen i avtalen verkar särskilt viktig för att marknaden ska acceptera och intressera sig för cirkulation av komplexa avfallsströmmar som mineraliska restavfall. Både avtalen i sig och arbetet med att ta fram dem stärker och formaliserar relationer mellan aktörer, och bidrar till att göra cirkulära marknader mer förutsägbara. Därigenom kan cirkulära avtal skapa tillit och värde på marknaden för avfallsbaserade resurser, vilket är avgörande för omställningen till en cirkulär ekonomi.Cirkulära avtal är ett verktyg som löser vissa problem i omställningen mot en cirkulär ekonomi, men inte alla. Till exempel kan avtal som sträcker sig under en lång tid minska incitamenten för teknisk utveckling. Vid utformning av avtal måste stor hänsyn tas till de lokala och nationella institutionella förutsättningarna, och till det specifika avfallets komplexitet.

- A circular economy creates a policy conflict between increased resource circulationand decreased dispersal of hazardous substances. On the basis of three case studiesin the EU, we have therefore identified various regulatory questions that can be posedto address the occurrence of hazardous substances in the use of waste. For each ofthese questions, we have proposed two possible responses influencing the design ofthe regulation and analyzed their consequences both f rom a circularity and from a tox-icity perspective.Currently, the regulations focus on reducing the dispersal of hazardous substancesrather than stimulating resource circulation. The allowable contamination levels in thewaste are typically regulated in relation to its mass rather than its content of valuableresources. The regulation of hazards in waste can be further developed in two gen-eral ways, by emphasizing either the risk of exposure to hazards or the total contentof hazards. A risk approach is beneficial for short-term circularity and waste produc-ers. A hazard approach is beneficial for long-term circularity and waste users. In orderto improve the balancing of the policy conflict in question, values, underlying assump-tions, and the effects of hazardous substances and resource circulation need to be bet-ter understood

Is this the end of end-of-waste? : Uncovering the space between waste and products

- End-of-waste has been promoted as a potential game changer in the circular economy. But the implementation of end-of-waste has largely failed in the European Union, as it has proven difficult to agree on joint criteria. The issue has therefore been decentralized, typically all the way to local authorities, which lacks capacity to determine when waste shall cease to be waste. For the few waste types that have been given product status, the positive effects are uncertain since end-of-waste only includes waste that is already circulated. Therefore, we should shift our interest towards the unknown space between waste and products. The interpretation of this space is open for discussion, but can be opened up by policy instruments such as standards, certificate and agreements, which makes the classification of the material redundant.
