  • Closing the loop on human urine: Plant availability of zeolite-recovered nutrients in a peat-based substrate
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0301-4797 .- 1095-8630. ; 211, s. 177-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recycling mineral nutrients from household wastewater is a central step in the development of a circular economy based society. The objective of this study was to evaluate plant availability of mineral elements and plant performance in a peat substrate containing nutrient-enriched zeolite (NEZ) obtained by nutrient recovery from human urine in a source separated wastewater system. Substrate content of potentially available mineral nutrients was determined by CaCl2/DTPA-extraction during a 12 weeks incubation experiment for 20:80 (R20) and 30:70 (R30) volume % of NEZ:sphagnum peat, limed R20 (R20L), and 20:80 vol% of unloaded zeolite:sphagnum peat (Z20). Plant availability of mineral elements from R20, R20L, R30 and Z20 was compared with conventionally fertilised sphagnum peat (P100) for sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cv. ‘Topolino’ in a pot experiment. Recovery of nutrients in a potentially available form in the R20 substrate after 12 weeks was 3% (K), 23% (N, P), 34% (Mg) and 90% (S). Liming increased the recovery of mineral N to 39%, suggesting that nitrification was an important driver for the release of NH4+. For R20, estimated recovery of urine-derived N in sunflower shoots was 30–36%. Shoot biomass was similar in R20 and in conventionally fertilised peat (P100). However, P100 plants had more leaves and flowers+buds. Initial addition of ammonium phosphate or supplemental fertilisation with a complete nutrient solution increased flower+bud number in R20. For the NEZ-treatments, Cu and B shoot concentrations were in the low or marginal range while Zn and Mn were high or in excess. Shoot growth and nutrient uptake of sunflower were highly restricted in the unloaded zeolite control (Z20). We conclude that 20% NEZ in a peat substrate was effective as a macronutrient source for sunflower, producing similar biomass as in conventionally fertilised peat. However, micronutrient balance and early P supply may need to be adjusted for optimal plant performance.

  • Näringsberikad zeolit som gödselmedel
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: LTV-fakultetens faktablad.
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract

  • Quantity Does Not Always Mean Quality: The Importance of Qualitative Social Science in Conservation Research
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Society and Natural Resources. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0894-1920 .- 1521-0723. ; 30, s. 1304-1310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Qualitative methods are important to gain a deep understanding of complex problems and poorly researched areas. They can be particularly useful to help explain underlying conservation problems. However, the significance in choosing and justifying appropriate methodological frameworks in conservation studies should be given more attention to ensure data are collected and analysed appropriately. We explain when, why, and how qualitative methods should be used and explain sampling strategies in qualitative studies. To improve familiarity with qualitative methods among natural scientists, we recommend expanding training in social sciences and increasing collaboration with social scientists. Given the scale of human impacts on the environment, this type of nuanced analytical skill is critical for progressing biodiversity conservation efforts.

  • Stakeholders’ influence towards sustainability transition in textile industries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production, Life Cycle Engineering and Management. - Singapore : Springer Singapore. - 2194-055X .- 2194-0541. ; , s. 233-248
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the rise of global challenges associated with linear models of production, transitioning to more sustainable models has become increasingly important and urgent. However, this transition is not done systematically due to a general lack of organizational knowledge and motivation to apply existing models, metrics and frameworks for sustainability. The current sustainable value proposition in organizations also shows that management rarely has a clear implementation strategy and underestimates what is required for a successful sustainability transition to take place. In addition, few empirical studies exist to corroborate these observations. This research focuses on analyzing the organizational barriers to the long-term sustainable transformation process, by considering the interests of all stakeholders, including the planet. The objective of the paper is to provide guidelines in the form of a decision support framework to textile industries to adopt and implement green technologies in their sustainability transition process.

  • Swedish manufacturing practices towards a sustainability transition in industry 4.0 : A resilience perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ASME 2021 16th International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference, MSEC 2021. - : American Society of Mechanical Engineers. - 9780791885062 ; 1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish strategic innovation programme, Produktion2030, is a national long-term effort towards global industrial competitiveness addressing Swedish industry’s transition towards climate goals of the European Green Deal while simultaneously realising smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 (I4.0). This paper investigated the extent of sustainability implementation and implications of I4.0 technologies through a nation-wide quantitative survey in Produktion2030’s 113 collaborative research projects. The analysis showed that 71% of the assessed projects included environmental aspects, 60% social aspects, and 45% Circular Economy (CE) aspects. Further, 65% of the projects implemented I4.0 technologies to increase overall sustainability. The survey results were compared with literature to understand how I4.0 opportunities helped derive sustainability and CE benefits. This detailed mapping of the results along with eight semi-structured interviews revealed that a majority of the projects implemented I4.0 technologies to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste in operations and incorporate CE practices in business models. The results also showed that Swedish manufacturing is progressing in the right direction of sustainability transition by deriving key resilience capabilities from I4.0-based enablers. Industries should actively adopt these capabilities to address the increasingly challenging and unpredictable sustainability issues arising in the world and for a successful transition towards sustainable manufacturing in a digital future.

  • Ranking sustainable urban mobility indicators and their matching transport policies to support liveable city Futures: A MICMAC approach
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives. - : Elsevier BV. - 2590-1982. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding, promoting and managing sustainable urban mobility better is very critical in the midst of an unprecedented climate crisis. Identifying, evaluating, benchmarking and prioritising its key indicators is a way to ensure that policy-makers will develop those transport strategies and measures necessary to facilitate a more effective transition to liveable futures. After identifying from the literature and the European Commission (EC) directives the indicators that are underpinning the powerful scheme of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) that each municipality in Europe may implement to elevate the wellbeing of its population, we adopt a Cross Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC) approach to assess, contextualise and rank them. Through conducting a qualitative study that involved a narrative literature review and more importantly in-depth discussions with 28 elite participants, each of them with expertise in sustainable development, we are able to designate the Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators (SUMIs) that are the most (and least) impactful. According to our analysis the most powerful indicator is traffic congestion, followed by affordability of public transport for the poorest, energy efficiency, access to mobility service and multimodal integration. This analysis allows us to then match them with the most applicable strategies that may ensure a holistic approach towards supporting in practical terms sustainable mobility in the city level. These are in ranking order: Transit Oriented Development (TOD); public and active transport enhancement; parking policies, vehicle circulation and ownership measures; telecommuting and car-pooling.

  • Driving Sustainability Through a VSM-Indicator-Based Framework : A Case in Pharma SME
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - : Springer Nature. ; , s. 213-227
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the availability of various tools, practitioners often lack a holistic perspective when conducting sustainability-related improvement activities. Existing Value Stream Mapping (VSM) tools that incorporate environmental aspects suffer from a lack of standardization and limited alignment with sustainability reporting standards. This paper introduces a framework for VSM that integrates sustainability indicators to assess and enhance the triple-bottom-line performance of manufacturing processes aligned with the global reporting initiative (GRI) standards. We validate the proposed framework through a case study conducted in a biopharmaceutical production system of a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) that employs single-use technologies. The study highlights the critical need for collaboration with equipment suppliers to develop production specifications considering operational performance and environmental impact, thereby capturing a comprehensive perspective. By utilizing the proposed framework, practitioners can identify opportunities for improving the design and efficiency of production systems. The case study provides valuable insights into SMEs’ challenges when transitioning to sustainable production, particularly when product-related requirements impose limitations on sustainability improvements. Although the framework's validation focuses on a biopharmaceutical SME, it can be applied to manufacturing companies across industries to assess and enhance all three aspects of sustainability in their processes.

  • Applying GRI Reports for the Investigation of Environmental Management Practices and Company Performance in Sweden, China and India
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 98:1, s. 36-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between environmental management practices (EMPs) and company performance has recently been debated in literature and is of interest for both industrial managers and political decision-makers. This paper investigates the relationship between EMPs and firm performance in manufacturing companies in Sweden, China and India. With the content analysis of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reports and financial reports of sample companies, the levels of EMPs and the companies' financial performances were coded. Further statistical assessment was conducted in order to identify patterns and correlations. The results indicate that only selected EMPs have been employed differently in three different countries. Most EMPs clearly do not have a positive correlation with the financial performance; i.e. employing EMPs does not necessarily improve the economic consequence of companies. Nevertheless, a number of EMPs do have a strong correlation with improving innovation performance in various companies. It is also interesting to note that a negative correlation exists between the Environmental standard for suppliers and Sales growth. This is possibly due to increasing operational costs and a delay in market acceptance. This research illustrates the possibility of using standard environmental data from GRI reports as a resource for future studies of EMPs. In order to improve long-term financial performance, this study also suggests that innovation should gain a substantial amount of attention when EMPs are employed.
