Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Meso-tetrakis (4-bromo-2-thiophene) and (5-bromo-2-thiophene) porphyrins were synthesized in 18% yield from freshly distilled pyrrole and the corresponding aldehydes in refluxing propionic acid. Reaction of both porphyrins with either Zn(OAc) 2 · 2H 2 O or Ag(OAc) afforded the corresponding metal complexes in 20% yield. The free bases and metal complexes were characterized by IR, NMR, EPR, MS and XPS. The crystal structure of 5,10,15,20(4-bromo-2-thiophene)porphyrinato Zn(II) was determined by X-ray diffraction and shows a 'zigzag-like' packing pattern due to S···S intermolecular interaction. Structural features of these molecules are discussed by DFT quantum chemical calculations. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- The critical levels for ozone effects on vegetation have been reviewed and revised by the LRTAP Convention. Eight new or revised critical levels based on the accumulated stomatal flux of ozone (POD gamma, the Phytotoxic Ozone Dose above a threshold flux of Y nmol m(-2) PLA s(-1), where PLA is the projected leaf area) have been agreed. For each receptor, data were combined from experiments conducted under naturally fluctuating environmental conditions in 2-4 countries, resulting in linear dose response relationships with response variables specific to each receptor (r(2) = 0.49-0.87, p

Registered Replication Report : Rand, Greene, and Nowak (2012)

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- In an anonymous 4-person economic game, participants contributed more money to a common project (i.e., cooperated) when required to decide quickly than when forced to delay their decision (Rand, Greene & Nowak, 2012), a pattern consistent with the social heuristics hypothesis proposed by Rand and colleagues. The results of studies using time pressure have been mixed, with some replication attempts observing similar patterns (e.g., Rand et al., 2014) and others observing null effects (e.g., Tinghög et al., 2013; Verkoeijen & Bouwmeester, 2014). This Registered Replication Report (RRR) assessed the size and variability of the effect of time pressure on cooperative decisions by combining 21 separate, preregistered replications of the critical conditions from Study 7 of the original article (Rand et al., 2012). The primary planned analysis used data from all participants who were randomly assigned to conditions and who met the protocol inclusion criteria (an intent-to-treat approach that included the 65.9% of participants in the time-pressure condition and 7.5% in the forced-delay condition who did not adhere to the time constraints), and we observed a difference in contributions of −0.37 percentage points compared with an 8.6 percentage point difference calculated from the original data. Analyzing the data as the original article did, including data only for participants who complied with the time constraints, the RRR observed a 10.37 percentage point difference in contributions compared with a 15.31 percentage point difference in the original study. In combination, the results of the intent-to-treat analysis and the compliant-only analysis are consistent with the presence of selection biases and the absence of a causal effect of time pressure on cooperation.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Abstract Objective: To examine whether there were any differences in the recovery in performance of personal activities of daily living (P-ADL) in elderly persons in relation to cognitive impairments pre- and poststroke from discharge to 6 and 12 months in elderly persons. Methods: Forty-five elderly persons after stroke were assessed at discharge from hospital and at 6 and at 12 months after stroke onset. A questionnaire posed to the next of kin was used to evaluate the person´s pre- and poststroke cognitive status. P-ADL was assessed with the Barthel Index. The Mini Mental State Examination and neuropsychological tests were used to measure cognitive functions after stroke. The National Institute of Health Stroke Scale was used to measure neurological deficits. Results: Persons with cognitive impairments before and after stroke did not improve in P-ADL from the acute phase until 6 and 12 months, while persons with intact cognition pre- and post stroke did. Conclusion: Since cognitive problems pre- and poststroke hinder recovery in P-ADL, it is important to understand the connection between cognitive impairment and activity limitations when planning the optimal rehabilitation, which could include special compensation strategies, learnt by the patients, cognitive assistive devices and/or appropriate personal support trained in meaningful activities in daily life in their natural environment.

Older adults’ provision of informal care and support to their peers – A cornerstone of swedish society: Demographic characteristics and experiences of social isolation
- 2022

Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Wiley. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 36:2, s. 468-481

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Background: Family members provide the majority of informal care for older adults in Sweden. Nevertheless, by providing a range of assistance, peers often emerge as a central to counter social isolation among older adults. Therefore, there is a need to know more about what informal care provision by older adults to their peers means for different groups of older adults. Aim: This study investigated the types of informal care and support that older adults provide to their peers in Sweden, and how these types of care and support are associated with demographic characteristics and social isolation. We also compared older adults who provide informal care and support with those who do not. Method: For this purpose, we used a national online survey named “Involuntary loneliness among senior citizens” answered by 10,044 older adults enrolled in the Swedish Citizen Panel. We adopted a mixed-method design to analyse the survey data, including free-text options (n = 2155) and numerical data. Social isolation was assessed using a score built from the social loneliness items of the UCLA Loneliness Scale. Results: In our population, 21.5% of the older adults were providing informal care and support to their peers. Practical/instrumental help was frequently offered by younger participants (<75 years), men and respondents who were less socially isolated. On a general level, the factors that were positively associated with giving informal care and support to peers were older age, being male, retired, married/living in a relationship, living in an urban area/big city and exhibiting greater isolation. Focusing specifically on social support shows that older participants (>80) and those experiencing less social isolation (score < 24) were more engaged in social activities. Conclusion: This paper is unique in exploring the informal peer-caregiver's perceptions of isolation. Data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic; this highlights the need to recognise informal care and support between older adults and to acknowledge their contributions as an essential component of Swedish civil society, especially during a societal crisis. © 2021 The Authors. Dissociation of the Inflammatory Reaction following PCI for Acute Myocardial Infarction
- 2007
-
Ingår i: J Inv Cardiology. ; 19:11, s. 452-456
-
Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- OBJECTIVES: Neutrophils are activated and infiltrate the myocardium after ischemia and reperfusion. The involvement of neutrophils in irreversible reperfusion injury is suggested by numerous experimental studies. The aim of this study was to investigate markers of neutrophil activation following reperfusion of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) accomplished with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and their relationship to markers of lipid peroxidation, cytokines and highly-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP). DESIGN: Non-consecutive patients with their first myocardial infarction were evaluated. Setting. University hospital as primary referral center, single center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-nine patients with AMI were evaluated. All were treated with primary PCI and infusion of abciximab. Reperfusion was verified by angiography. Blood samples for analyses of myeloperoxidase (MPO), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-isoprostane-prostaglandin F2alpha (Iso-P), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 8 (IL-8), tumor necrosis factoralpha (TNFalpha), hsCRP, creatine kinase-monobasic fraction (CK-MB) and troponin-T (TnT) were obtained at baseline with the occluded coronary vessel, and subsequently after verified reperfusion at 1.5, 3 and 24 hours. RESULTS: Significant increases in MMP-9, IL-6, IL-8, TNFalpha and hsCRP were observed, and a significant decrease in MPO and MDA was also observed over the same period. No significant changes in Iso-P and NGAL were found. CONCLUSION: We found a dissociation of the inflammatory reaction after PCI for AMI: a decrease of markers of neutrophil activation and MDA, but an increase in cytokines and hsCRP. An antineutrophil effect of the PCI procedure including treatment with abciximab, an antiplatelet drug and a modulator of inflammation, is conceivable.

Development of the form and meaning of defmiteness in Russian-speaking learners of Swedish

Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
- The study investigates the development of defmiteness in two groups of Russian-speaking learners of Swedish, one beginner group and one more advanced group. While Russian does not have articles, Swedish expresses defmiteness through a complex noun-phrase (NP) structure. Using an oral elicitation task, the study examines the learners' ability to produce morphemes that encode (in)defmiteness, their ability to accurately choose between indefinite and definite forms, and the relationship between these two abilities. Findings include that the complex NP structure emerged gradually while there was no evident development with regard to meaning. Initially, however, learners who used the morphemes more also tended to overuse them, while later in development those who produced many morphemes were also more likely to use them accurately. The paper thus demonstrates that the acquisition of a morphosyntactic form and the association of this form with its meaning are two separate processes to some extent.
