  • Fresh Conservatism : Landscapes of Normality
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Quaderns. - Barcelona : Association of Architects of Catalonia (COAC). - 0211-9595. ; :219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction"The sort of economies of signs and space that became pervasive in the wake of organized capitalism do not just lead to increasing meaninglessness, homogenization, abstraction, anomie and the deconstruction of the subject. Another set of radically divergent processes is simultaneously taking place. These processes may open up possibilities for the recasting of meaning in work and leisure, for the reconstitution of community and the particular, for the reconstruction of a transmogrified subjectivity, of space and everyday life." Scott Lash & John UrryThe landscape in which we move is becoming increasingly artificial. There is much talk of a second modernity. Old values and instruments no longer work. Property developers, architects, artists, banks, the media, scientists and multinationals are all devising new spaces and images in order to give a lead to this new reality. This incoherent situation allows for plenty of room for experiment. The smoothly operating newness of everyday moments is something that attracts many innovative or critical designers. A vacuum has been created in which an unprecedented degree of innovation has a chance of success because nobody knows what the appropriate response to this situation really is. Research, analysis and experiment are being promoted by almost all the parties that have a stake in the artificial landscape. There is scope for a host of inventors of the new.In this article I want to describe the potential and the dangers of a strategy that makes no bones about operating, not outside the second modernity, but quite specifically in and with the complexity of "ordinary" everyday life with all its contradictions. True, many experiments do not go beyond a tendency that I will call Fresh Conservatism. In the end Fresh Conservatism achieves the opposite of the potential behind the basic principles of this approach. Simply defined, Fresh Conservatism is a tendency that presents the normally discreet character of conservatism in a spectacularly fresh fashion, as a work of art. This freshness is of course itself an inseparable part of our conservative industry of spectacle

  • Increase of decorin content in articular cartilage following running.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Connective Tissue Research. - : Informa Healthcare. - 0300-8207 .- 1607-8438. ; 37:3-4, s. 295-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of long distance running exercise (40 km/day for 15 weeks, five days a week) on the decorin content of articular cartilage from the knee joint was studied in female beagle dogs. Samples from load bearing sites on the lateral plateau of the tibia (TL), and pooled material from two minimum load bearing sites on the posterior section of lateral (FLP) and medial (FMP) femoral condyles were analyzed. The running exercise protocol did not lead to significant changes in the overall glycosaminoglycan content of the cartilage. However, the amount of decorin significantly increased in the TL samples, and also in the FMP pool. These results support earlier in vitro observations that decorin synthesis is stimulated by loading, independent of the synthesis of aggrecan.

  • Mutation in the Arabidopsis PASTICCINO1 gene, which encodes a new FK506-binding protein-like protein, has a dramatic effect on plant development
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Biology. - : American Society for Microbiology. - 0270-7306 .- 1098-5549. ; 18:5, s. 3034-3043
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pasticcino (pas) mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana are a new class of plant developmental mutants; members of this class show ectopic cell proliferation in cotyledons, extra layers of cells in the hypocotyl, and an abnormal apical meristem. This phenotype is correlated with both cell division and cell elongation defects. There are three complementation groups of pas mutants (pas1, pas2, and pas3, with, respectively 2, 1, and 4 alleles), Here we describe in more detail the pas1-1 allele, which was obtained by insertional mutagenesis. The PAS1 gene has been cloned and characterized; it encodes an immunophilin-like protein similar to the p59 FK506-binding protein (FKBP52). PAS1 is characterized by an FKBP-like domain and three tetratricopeptide repeat units. Although the presence of immunophilins in plants has already been demonstrated, the pas1-1 mutant represents the first inactivation of an FKBP-like gene in plants. PAS1 expression is altered in pas1 mutants and in the pas2 and pas3 mutants. The expression of the PAS1 gene is increased in the presence of cytokinins, a class of phytohormones originally discovered because of their ability to stimulate cell division. These results are of particular relevance as they show for the first time that an FKBP-like protein plays an important role in the control of plant development.

  • Internal Migration in Sweden: The Effects of Mobility Grants and Regional Labour Market Conditions
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Labour. - : Wiley. - 1121-7081 .- 1467-9914. ; 12:2, s. 363–388-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether variations in mobility grants have affected internal migration in Sweden. The paper also contains an exploration of how changing labour market conditions influence the migratory behaviour of the unemployed in comparison with other individuals. The results indicate that total migration flows respond to changes in labour market conditions in accordance with predictions from economic theory. This finding seems mainly to stem from the migratory behaviour of the unemployed. Furthermore, non-matching migration subsidies at the levels employed are not found to be migration enhancing.

  • Enantioselective analysis of organochlorine pesticides in herring and seal from the Swedish marine environment
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Marine Pollution Bulletin. - Oxford : Pergamon Press. - 0025-326X .- 1879-3363. ; 36:5, s. 345-353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Factors influencing the changes of enantiomeric ratios (ERs) in herring (Clupea harengus), grey seal (Halichoerus grypus), harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) and ringed seal (Phoca hispida) collected along the Swedish coastline were studied by enantioselective high-resolution gas chromatography (HRGC). Three-year-old male and female herring individuals from different sampling sites were selected, whereas seal blubber and liver samples represented different species, sexes and geographical locations. Enantioselective analysis of α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH), chlordanes and chlordane metabolites were performed. In general, herring showed similar ERs within the Baltic Sea. Results indicate that species specific differences are important factors controlling the ERs of Baltic seals. Inverse ERs in seal blubber and liver, and a low deviation from the racemic ratio of some components in the liver, indicate that not only enantioselective degradation but also stereoselectivity of other processes are responsible for the changes of ERs in biota.

  • Enantioselective gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of methylsulfonyl PCBs with application to arctic marine mammals
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - Washington : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 70:18, s. 3845-3852
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four different commercially available cyclodextrin (CD) capillary gas chromatography (GC) columns were tested for the enantioselective separation of nine environmentally persistent atropisomeric 3- and 4-methylsulfonyl PCBs (MeSO2-CBs). The selected columns contained cyclodextrins with various cavity diameters (β- or γ-CD), which were methylated and/or tert-butyldimethylsilylated (TBDMS) in the 2,3,6-O-positions. The β-CD column with TBDMS substituents in all of the 2,3,6-O-positions was by far the most selective column for the MeSO2-CBs tested. Enantiomers of congeners with 3-MeSO2 substitution were more easily separated than those with 4-MeSO2 substitution. The separation also seemed to be enhanced for congeners with the chlorine atoms on the non-MeSO2-containing ring and clustered on one side of the same ring. The 2,3-di-O-methyl-6-O-TBDMS-β-CD was found to give somewhat better selectivity than the corresponding γ-CD, in comparison between the two columns, which were identical in all other respects. Enantioselective analysis of arctic ringed seal (Phoca hispida) and polar bear (Ursus maritimus) adipose tissue revealed a strong dominance of certain enantiomers. For example, the enantiomer ratio (ER) of 3-MeSO2-CB149 was 0.32 and <0.1 in ringed seal blubber and polar bear fat, respectively. These low ER values are indicative of highly enantioselective formation, enantioselective metabolism, enantioselective transport across cell membranes, or a combination of the three in both species. Comparable results for the enantiomeric analysis of MeSO2-CBs in biotic tissue extracts were obtained using two highly selective mass spectrometric techniques, ion trap mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry and electron capture negative ion low-resolution mass spectrometry.

  • Wave interactions in a shallow-water model
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Nonlinear processes in geophysics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1023-5809 .- 1607-7946. ; 5:3, s. 137-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By using a Hamiltonian method, non-linear three-wave interaction in a class of systems related to the shallow water model is considered and a general coupling coefficient is presented. In the special case where two inertial waves and one Rossby wave interact resonantly, it is found that even a very small shear of the background velocity can be important in the interaction process. The stability of the system is considered by using a pseudoenergy method. Some implications for the dynamics of atmospheric flows are pointed out.

  • Understanding rural and remote divisions under a workforce framework.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: The Australian journal of rural health. - 1038-5282 .- 1440-1584. ; 6:3, s. 156-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Australia, divisions of general practice are the organisational structures for local networks of general practitioners. They facilitate communication across the profession and with other parts of the health system and are established in urban, rural and remote areas. Funding is provided contractually to divisions through the Federal Government's Divisions and Projects Grants Program. The under-supply of doctors and other health professionals in rural and remote areas of Australia is a serious problem that has far-reaching effects. The present paper argues that if the Divisions and Projects Grants Program is to be effective in achieving its aims and objectives, then the Program's policies must be responsive to the different needs, roles, constraints, expectations and capabilities of divisions and their members as well as the structural impediments imposed by the medical workforce.
