    • This study is about school grades and college applications. It focuses on the effects of supplementary adult upper-secondary education. From a Swedish perspective, it is important to study the effects of such education due to the important role that grades have in the Swedish college-selection process. The persons in the study graduated from upper secondary school sometime 1997–2001 (N361466). Background variables used in this study are: Age, social group, country of birth, the parents’ country of birth and the parents’ highest level of study. The results indicate that about 50 percent of the persons have studied either the Natural Science Programme or the Social Science Programme in the upper-secondary school. High achievers, in terms of high grades from the last year in upper-secondary school, are those persons born in the country, belonging to social-group 1 and with parents that have a high educational level. The study also shows that the upper-secondary schools have become more generous over time. The grades for the graduating students are getting higher and higher each year. About 30 percent have studied in adult upper-secondary school. About one third of those have boosted their grades. About 40 percent have applied to college. Among the college-applicants, there are more women then men. The college-applicants are also characterised by having parents with a high educational level. About 40 percent of the college applicants have studied in adult upper-secondary school, and that group is characterised by having parents with a low educational level.

  • Emancipationens gränser : Emilie Flygare-Carléns 1840-talsromaner och kvinnans ställning

    • Emilie Flygare-Carlén (1807—92) was one of the most widely read novelists in Sweden throughout the nineteenth century. This study construes her works as participating in an emancipatory dialogue. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the way in which Emilie Flygare-Carlén treats, discusses, and problematizes gender relations in her novels. The study has been restricted to Emilie Flygare-Carlén’s 1840s, and concentrates on a number of focal themes in her writing: romantic love, society, identity, and marriage.The first chapter of this book deals with the romantic notion of love, and investigates why two of three heroines in Kyrkoinvigningen i Hammarby (The Consecration of the Church of Hammarby, 1840-41) are destroyed by their love of the novel’s romantic hero. The main interest of the second chapter of the study is the various ways in which a female writer could shed light on broader social issues, when at the same time there existed a resistance against female participation in the discussion of society. In Flygare-Carlén’s breakthrough novel Rosen på Tistelön (The Rose of Tistelön, 1842) it is shown how an author can move past this by using the novel’s full potential to mold and test her society through the use of aesthetics and genre. The analysis also demonstrate the way in which specifically coded female spheres and topics, such as the household and motherhood, are being used in Flygare-Carlén’s novel in order to discuss societal issues of the time, including the vulnerable position of women in nineteenth century society.The topic of this study’s third chapter is the possibilities of the female subject. In the novel En natt vid Bullar-sjön (One Night by the Bullar-sjö Lake, 1847), the two leading female characters are examined in their attempts at building independent identities in a time when predominantly men were allowed to become individuals. The last chapter of this book discusses marriage as an institution, and demonstrate how the legal rights of marriage are criticized and problematized in the novels Ett år (Twelve Months of Matrimony, 1846), En nyckfull qvinna (The Whimsical Woman, 1848-49), and Ett rykte (A Rumour, 1850). In the chapter’s latter half, the melodramatic and intrigue-saturated style that typifies Flygare-Carlén’s novels towards the end of 1840s is also discussed. Diverging from those who regard this mode solely as a means of creating suspense, breathing with commercial undertones, I analyze this kind of aesthetics as a bearer of both meaning and ideology. The thesis ends in a discussion of how Flygare-Carlén’s novels move along the borders of emancipation of her time in an examining and exploratory manner. Her novels map limitations, such as the superior position of men, but also possible openings, including equal marriages and improved female influence on society.

    • Mechanical intestinal obstruction is an important diagnosis and a common cause of acute abdominal pain. Adhesions and scar tissue in the abdomen after previ­ous surgery is a frequent source. Small bowel obstruction caused by adhesions can be treated conservatively, but surgery may be needed. Laparotomy is usually the approach for adhesiolysis, but laparoscopy is an option.This case rapport describes a man in his 50s being admitted with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Further investigation showed a small bowel obstruction caused by adhesions. After two days expectation, surgery be­came necessary. During laparoscopy, the surgeon’s finger was introduced intraabdominally and used to release the adhesion. We here present a possible approach to a situation encountered during laparoscopic adhesiolysis and encourage creativity and laparoscopy in selected patients with mechanical small bowel obstruction.

    • In contemporary cultural studies there has been a marked focus on a modern world in flux and transformation. Life is often depicted in terms of an ever-increasing individualism and a constant fragmentation of social life and old collectives. This paper takes a critical look at this genre. What kinds of processes that create stability and continuity in people’s lives are overlooked or ignored?  How can we develop analytical perspectives to capture such undercurrents in society? One such field is explored – that of everyday routines. The argument is that it is precisely their seemingly trivial and insignificant position that may make routines powerful in society.

  • Naturliga bakgrundshalter av bly, zink och arsenik i Svenska ytvatten baserat på metallernas haltvariation i morän och sedimentära jordar : implikationer för EU:s ramdirektiv för vatten och nationella miljömål

    • Hösten 2006 ska vatten i sjöar och vattendrag kunna bedömas enligt EU:s ramdirektiv för vatten (RDV, 2000/60/EG), vilken successivt håller på att arbetas in i den svenska miljölagstiftningen. Miljöövervakningsprogram skall då vara operationella och utvärderingar av dessa data skall ligga till grund för åtgärdsplaner inom avrinningsområden. Målet är att alla vatten ska uppnå ”God ytvattenstatus” år 2015. För varje typ av sjö eller vattendrag ska typspecifika referensförhållanden fastställas för hydromorfologiska, fysikalisk-kemiska och biologiska parametrar. Dessa skall i huvudsak representera av människan opåverkade förhållanden.Syftet med detta projekt har varit att utveckla modeller för att skatta lokalspecifika referensvärden för Pb-, Zn- och As-halterna i svenska sjöar utgående från de naturgivna förutsättningarna i form av klimat, geologi, vegetation, hydrologi och ytvattenkemi. Modellerna skall kunna användas av miljömyndigheterna vid tillämpningen av EU:s ramdirektiv för vatten och de nationella miljömålen ”Levande sjöar och vattendrag” och ”Giftfri miljö”.Baserat på resultat från riksinventeringen av sjöar år 2000, SGU:s markgeokemiska och biogeokemiska kartering, officiell statistik över klimat, topografi, markslag etc. har statistiska modeller utvecklats för att skatta de naturliga bakgrundshalterna för Pb, Zn och As i skogssjöar vars tillrinningsområden domineras av skog, myr och fjäll. Modellerna baseras på resultaten från 644 sjöar och drygt 28 000 markgeokemiska observationer. Multipla linjära regressionsmodeller användes i samtliga fall. För Pb och Zn utfördes den statistiska inferensen m.h.a. vanlig minstakvadratteknik, men för As användes en robust regressionsteknik som minimerar inflytandet från uteliggare (outliers) bland både beroende och oberoende variabler i modellen. Ingående analyser av de statistiska förutsättningarna har utförts och modellerna uppfyller de teoretiska kriterier som förutsätts av de använda teknikerna. Variationerna i halterna av Pb, Zn och As kan till 71%, 65% respektive 54% förklaras i huvudsak av sjöinterna faktorer med koppling till deras humushalter (TOC) och surhetstillstånd (pH). Dessutom indikerar modellerna att den ackumulerade atmosfäriska depositionen av metaller och sura ämnen inverkar på haltnivåerna.Genom att skapa en andra typ av modeller, där även markgeokemisk och biogeokemisk information tvingats in, ökar förklaringsgraden med 3, 7 och 3 procentenheter för Pb, Zn respektive As. Den marginellt ökande förklaringsgraden av dessa parametrar indikerar att riksinventeringen av sjöar och vattendrag är ett trubbigt underlag för att belysa geokemins betydelse för metallhalterna i ytvatten. Antalet objekt är slumpmässigt utvalda och endast i undantagsfall träffas en sjö med höga metallhalter p.g.a. lokalt förhöjda metallhalter i marken. Humushalt, pH etc. överskuggar markgeokemins inflytande i huvuddelen av objekten eftersom markens metallhalter normalt är tämligen låga.Andra studier visar att det lokalt, i områden med höga metallhalter i marken, föreligger ett samband mellan geokemi och ytvattenhalter av metaller. Det föreligger följaktligen ett fortsatt behov av att studera vid vilka haltnivåer i marken som markgeokemin börjar få betydelse för bakgrundshalterna av metaller i ytvatten. Vi föreslår därför att SGU initierar ett sådant projekt med inriktning mot områden med höga, naturliga metallhalter i marken och där små källvattendrag utgör responssystem.

    • This study compares the manner in which local schools organize to address the policy problem of support for pupils with special needs. Since the end of the 1970s, it has been a central aim to decentralise basic comprehensive education in Sweden. Several reforms have totally remapped the formal organization structures and how educational resources are allocated from the state to municipalities. The role of central and regional state administration has shifted from being highly involved in regulating state grants to evaluating implementation of state goals. The implementa­tion structure approach used in research relies primarily upon semi-structured interviews with members of schools to identify who is involved in the tasks of defining needs, deciding priorities among needs, mobilising resources to alleviate needs and evaluating the work. From the teachers selected as the point of entry into schools, the interviewing proceeded to other members of the municipal educational system, within or outside the local school district. In each municipality one local school district was selected for study, and in each school district the study focuses on the upper level of the comprehensive school. Care has been taken to select schools of a certain size and to find schools with non-selective school populations. The same schools were studied in 1986 and 1995.One conclusion from the interviews in 1986 was that political intentions and the special SR- grant had minor or non-existent implications for the work being done in schools. It was of no interest where resources came from. This same conclusion can still be made in 1995. The review of how municipal education committees organized allocation of the SR-grant in 1986 did not indicate that they had acted to develop areas or criteria to direct more actively the use of resources in schools. This study argues that the capacity of municipal education committees to actively participate in the work has actually deteriorated. Decentralization of formal powers in combination with declining resources actually worsened the situation in this respect between 1986 and 1995. One can see that variation between schools in respect of total resources in the schools has declined, but to a level under the expected total amount of resources in 1986. In a comparison between schools on how schools actually have allocated resources to different education purposes, the finding is that the variation is immense both in 1986 and 1995 - but in different ways. Some schools gave priority to lowering the group average while others made their priority special education teachers. In both cases there is no evidence that pupil needs had anything to do with these priorities. The lack of evaluations for pupils with special needs is the foremost problem for both those with responsibility for schools and for the implications at higher levels.

    • School is an important institution charged with the task of contributing to the economic, cultural and social development of the community, and of nurturing democratic citizens. Countless state-sponsored measures have therefore been initiated in order to affect the quality of schooling. One example is a state-financed school development project, which is the focus of this thesis. The overall purpose of the study was to improve awareness of whether, and if so how, using projects as a strategy for improving school contributes to sustainable changes, as well as what has been both advantageous and disadvantageous to this end. Two projects were studied with a focus on the participant's perceptions of and experiences from this project. A number of headmasters and educators were interviewed on two occasions, once in connection with the final phases of the projects, and then again three years later. The analysis of the empirical data was guided by The Frame Factor Model (Lundgren, 1994, 1999), and by Hoy and Miskel's (2008) organisational model. In summary, the study shows that the ambitions of both of the school projects were greater than the sustainable results. Moreover, it was clear that the conditions placed upon the school organisation by the outside world constituted both promoted and encumbered the results of the school projects. State funds contributed to the improvement of schools, while at the same time, other state regulations delimited what the sustainable changes were. The desirable changes were also affected by processes within the organisation and can be connected with structures, cultures and individuals. Above all, current structures within the organisation need to be changed so that the employees have an in-depth involvement in a project and for a protracted period of time. Changed structures allow for common expertise and values to be improved with regard to venturing into a project. Furthermore, the various skills of the employees, as well as their attitudes toward projects within the organisation, were also significant to the sustainable changes. One suggestion for continued research is to improve the knowledge on how structures can be changed within a school organisation so as to enable the organisation's employees to be engaged in such a way as to make collective learning possible.
