  • Youth well-being contextualized : Perceptions of Swedish fathers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Child and Youth Care Forum. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1053-1890 .- 1573-3319. ; 48:6, s. 773-795
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Fathers can have a critical role to play in supporting the well-being of youth. However, little is known about how fathers perceive youth well-being. The Five Cs model of positive youth development was the theoretical starting point of this study, in part due to this framework’s focus on the importance of bi-directional, person–context relations (Geldhof et al., in: Molenaar, Lerner, Newell (eds) Handbook of developmental systems theory and methodology, Guilford Press, New York, 2014). Questions posed in the present study were derived from the 4-H study of positive youth development (Lerner et al. in J Early Adolesc 25(1):17–71, 2005), which is rooted in the Five Cs model. Objective: The present study explored themes and patterns of meaning in descriptive information from fathers about youth well-being.Method: An inductive–deductive approach to thematic analysis was used to examine responses to open-ended survey questions from 201 Swedish fathers regarding youth well-being.Results: Based on the fathers’ reports four themes were identified: cognitive well-being, emotional and psychological well-being, physical well-being, and social well-being. While some sub-components of these themes have been identified in earlier literature, new sub-components were also found in each domain of youth well-being (i.e., cognitive, emotional/psychological, physical, social). Conclusions: These findings suggest that the understanding of youth well-being is contextual and multi-faceted, and that fathers’ perceptions can be important to consider in future research as they may further our insight into the rich and nuanced characteristics of positive youth development in diverse contexts.

  • Youth well-being within the family context : Belief and behavior patterns of Swedish fathers, mothers, and youths
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Youth well-being is multifaceted, complex, and embedded in sociocultural contexts. In this dissertation, youth well-being is explored within the family context from a developmental niche theoretical perspective. Belief and behavior patterns of Swedish fathers, mothers, and youths are analyzed separately based on self-reported surveys in three empirical studies. All participants are from the national research project KUPOL.In Study 1, fathers’ dominant belief patterns about youth well-being are explored. By studying 201 fathers’ descriptions, four broad and frequent themes were identified. They were cognitive, emotional/psychological, physical, and social well-being. While some sub-themes confirm earlier research findings, other sub-themes that have not received much theoretical attention were also identified. In light of these findings, youth well-being is discussed as a concept that is multidimensional and sociocultural. The study is one of the first of its kind to highlight specifically fathers’ belief patterns concerning youth well-being.In Study 2, Swedish mothers’ belief patterns of youth well-being are analyzed qualitatively, and potential links with gender and education characteristics are studied quantitatively. Based on descriptions from 1074 mothers, five dominant themes were identified, namely academic/cognitive, emotional/psychological, physical, recreational, and social well-being. Theme combinations were also identified from individual reports, with an emphasis on cognitive, emotional, and social well-being domains. The themes were not found to be linked with youths’ gender. However, mothers with higher formal education reported a greater range of belief patterns than mothers with less formal education. These findings support the sparse but existing research on mothers’ views of youth well-being. Considering that some belief patterns were more evident than others, future research should consider to what extent this might be linked with ideas and norms in the cultural and socioeconomic contexts. In Study 3, youth reports of the parent-youth relationship are studied in relation to self-evaluations of well-being. By analyzing information from 1883 youths, it was found that democratic parenting, maternal warmth, and paternal warmth were concurrently linked with youth disclosure in seventh grade, and youth disclosure was in turn associated with academic, emotional, and social well-being in eighth grade. Paternal warmth was also linked to emotional well-being a year later. Gender moderation was identified between youth disclosure and emotional well-being. The study highlights the importance of studying the family context characterized by democracy, warmth, and routine disclosure in relation to youth well-being.Beyond the findings in the three studies, the dissertation contributes to contemporary but limited knowledge on youth well-being. In conclusion, the dissertation shows how youth well-being is conceptualized by parents, what sociodemographic characteristics may be linked with these conceptual beliefs, and how mutuality between parents and youths may facilitate understanding about the complexities of youth well-being within the family context. Theoretical argumentations are proposed for the embeddedness of youth well-being in sociocultural contexts. Based on findings and theoretical underpinnings, the dissertation concludes with a discussion, practical implications, and future directions for theory and research.

  • When do preschool conduct problems link to future social adjustment problems and when do they not?
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Developmental science and the holistic approach. - Mahwah, NJ, US : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Publishers. - 0805833749 ; , s. 349-375
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, with reference to the holistic, interactionist position outlined by D. Magnusson (1995) and Magnusson and H. Stattin (1998), the authors illustrate the person-context issue by means of study of antisocial development--one that treats some of the early risk conditions relevant to later social adjustment problems. They propose, first, that behavioral problems on the part of the individual child have limited long-term implications in otherwise normally functioning families. By contrast, when conduct problems co-occur with poor parent-child relationships, the risk of future social adjustment problems is far greater. If such amplification is a general developmental factor, it would be expected to apply to both sexes. /// A group of children and their parents were followed from birth to adulthood. Preschool information was analyzed about the individual child (gathered at ages 4 and 5) and parent-child relationships. Different child characteristics and context configurations were examined rather than treating behavior and family environment as separate variables. Taken as a whole, the findings suggest that a constellation of early behavioral and relational problems, not in isolation, are prognostic of future adjustment problems.

  • Relationships between social anxiety, depressive symptoms, and antisocial behaviors : Evidence from a prospective study of adolescent boys
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Anxiety Disorders. - Amsterdam : Elsevier BV. - 0887-6185 .- 1873-7897. ; 23:5, s. 718-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is understood about generalized and non-generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD) and their associations With co-occurring internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescence. In the present study, we investigated adolescent boys with SAD symptoms and considered depressive symptoms as well as antisocial behaviors when looking for patterns during two developmental time periods: junior high and high school. Participants in the analyses were part of a longitudinal study. No patterns were found linking antisocial problems and non-generalized SAD in either junior high or high school. Furthermore, it was uncommon for youths in the non-generalized SAD Subgroup to develop comorbidity over time. The generalized SAD subgroup of boys, however, was likely to develop comorbidity either with depressive symptoms only or with depressive symptoms and antisocial tendencies. Our findings Suggest that developmental pathways for SAD subgroups may differ.

  • Mothers’ and Fathers’ Worry and Over-Control : One Step Closer to Understanding Early Adolescent Social Anxiety
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Child Psychiatry and Human Development. - : Springer. - 0009-398X .- 1573-3327. ; 49:6, s. 921-927
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated the links between parental worry, parental over-control and adolescent social anxiety in parent-adolescent dyads. Using a longitudinal sample of adolescents (Mage = 14.28) and their parents (224 mother–daughter, 234 mother–son, 51 father–daughter, and 47 father–son dyads), comparisons were conducted using cross-lagged path models across two time points. We used adolescent reports of social anxiety and feelings of being overly controlled by parents, and mother and father self-reports of worries. Our results show that boys’ social anxiety predicted higher perceived parental overcontrol, whereas girls’ social anxiety predicted higher paternal worry over time. In addition, girls’ reports of feeling overly controlled by parents predicted higher maternal worry but lower paternal worry over time. For boys, feeling overly controlled predicted less social anxiety instead. The study illustrates how mothers and fathers might differ in their behaviors and concerns regarding their children’s social anxiety and feelings of overcontrol.
