Regulating, fostering and preserving : the production of sexual normates through cognitive ableism and cognitive othering

- People with cognitive disabilities are commonly positioned as risky sexual subjects. This article discusses the discursive production of sexual normates in the form of desirable and normative able-minded sexual subjects, in scientific research on the sexuality and cognitive disabilities of younger and older individuals (in particular those with dementia). We identify three interrelated discourses: regulating sexuality; fostering sexuality; and preserving sexuality. The first of these, regulation, pathologises sexuality of people with cognitive disabilities as faulty and in need of restriction. The second discourse, fostering, is more affirmative and argues for educating for a 'healthy' sexuality of people with cognitive disabilities, to mitigate risks of abuse. This discourse is more salient with younger people. The third discourse, preservation, in contrast, is more visible with older people with dementia and affirms sexuality so long as it is consistent with a 'genuine' or 'authentic' sexuality of the past. In conclusion, scientific research reinforces the cultural ideal of the rational and autonomous individual (and as such the mature/adult) capable of making independent decisions and engaging in healthy, good sex, based on stable sexual identities. Findings demonstrate how age intersects with cognitive ableism to intensify the cultural anxiety that exists around the sexualities of people with cognitive disabilities.

- Using a large data set of online media content in eight European countries, this paper broadens the empirical investigation of the online hostility hypothesis, which posits that interactions on social sites such as blogs and forums contain more hostile expressions toward minority groups than social interactions offline or in editorial news media. Overall, our results are consistent with the online hostility hypothesis when comparing news media content with social sites, but we find that negatively charged representations are common in both media types. It is instead the amount of attention to Muslims and Islam on social sites that most clearly differs and is the main driver of online hostility in the online media environment more broadly conceived.

- the role of issues in electoral preference formation has long been an established key factor and what voters consider the most important problem i.e. issue salience is essential for party choice. Political issues (and their salience to the electorate) also play an important role in parties' tactical campaign strategies. This study examines to what extent social media possibly can contribute in shaping the issue agenda regarding the political parties. The issue agenda on Twitter is likely to have its own characteristics and dynamics, shaped by the technical peculiarities, users and the new campaigning possibilities that social media offers. This study will identify what issues are salient in the online discussions in conjunction with the European election and Swedish national election 2014. The distribution of issue attention divided to the various parties on social media is analyzed in light of the issue agenda set forth by the voters for the different elections.

- New sexual scripts on later life are emerging, discourses on “sexy oldies” challenge pervasive discourses on asexual old age. Still, sexuality among people with dementia, who are generally older, is rarely affirmed. Research on sexuality and dementia is, moreover, dominated by biomedical accounts that regard sexual and intimate behaviours as expressions of pathology. However, sexuality and intimacy could be significant aspects of later life, also when living with dementia. This qualitative study explores experiences of sexuality and intimacy among heterosexual couples where one partner was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Interviews were conducted with seven couples, aged 55–87, and both the person with the dementia diagnosis and their partner participated. The findings point to a diversity of experiences, with differences between the older and younger couples. The older couples experienced changes more as a result of embodied ageing, and sexuality and intimacy were experienced as sources of pleasure, comfort and recognition. The younger couples understood changes more as caused by Alzheimer’s disease and experienced a greater loss of intimacy and desire. The study shows how experiences of sexuality and intimacy when living with dementia are shaped by varying sexual scripts and expectations of health in different parts of the life course.

- Trots ett ökat teoretiserande av queer tid och queera temporaliteter är queerforskningens intresse för åldrande och äldre påfallande ljumt. Att tänka samman queerteori och åldrandeforskning är dock ett angeläget och löftesrikt projekt som inte enbart handlar om att studera livsvillkoren för äldre LHBTQ-personer utan även om att utforska hur normativitet kan förstås i relation till äldre och det goda livet (i ålderdomen) i en vidare bemärkelse. Åldrandet och äldre har ofta, liksom queera liv, kommit att förknippas med skam, äckel och det bakåtsträvande: själva framtidens motsats. På senare tid har de negativa diskurserna om åldrande dock kommit att samsas med mer positiva, enligt vilka livet på ”äldre dar” innebär en möjlighet till fortsatt aktivitet och delaktighet och betraktas som en tid för självförverkligande efter pensioneringen. Kritiska forskare har problematiserat det goda/ /positiva/framgångsrika åldrandet som det formulerats inom såväl forskning som populärkultur och massmedia, och menar att nya, positiva diskurser riskerar att osynliggöra intersektionella ojämlikheter mellan äldre. Denna artikel utvecklar existerande kritisk forskning om positivt åldrande genom att diskutera heteronormativitet och hur positivt åldrande konstrueras som just positivt genom att associeras till tvåsamma heterosexuella relationer och barnbarn. Artikeln diskuterar uttryck för positivt åldrande inom massmedia och forskning och kopplar samman dessa med Sara Ahmeds teoretiserande av heterosexualitet, familj och lycka. Frammanandet av det positiva åldrandet och den sammanhängande heteronormativa ”lyckliga” intimiteten sker dock genom en kontrastering mot ett ”misslyckat” och ”olyckligt” åldrande, som knyts till åldrande med funktionsnedsättningar i allmänhet och demenssjukdom i synnerhet. Genom medicinska diskurser om ”sexuellt opassande beteenden” hos demenssjuka äldre positioneras dessa som problematiska, abjekta, och queera (icke)subjekt, vilkas intima relationer framställs som olyckliga relationer. Avslutningsvis diskuterar artikeln hur heteronormativa relationer och intimitet fyller en viktig funktion i konstruktionen av det positiva åldrande, som en länk till eller association med framtid och en disassociation med negativitet, förlust och död i åldrandet.

- The objective of this study is to contribute knowledge about formation of political agendas on Twitter during mediated political events, using the party leaders' debates in Sweden before the general election of 2014 as a case study. Our findings show that issues brought up during the debates were largely mirrored on Twitter, with one striking discrepancy. Contrary to our expectations, issues on the left-right policy dimension were more salient on Twitter than in the debates, whereas issues such as the environment, immigration and refugees, all tied to a liberal-authoritarian value axis, were less salient on Twitter. © 2019 Sandberg, L.A.C., Bjereld, U., Bunyik, K., Forsberg, M. & Johansson, R., published by Sciendo 2019.
