- In 1798 the Royal Academy of Science instituted a classification of its members, designating the last class to be filled by those engaged with world of learning and beautiful arts. This study maps the population of this “learned class” and analyzes the negotiation of epistemic virtues and merits linked to the nebulous field from which the class drew its members. The article argues that a previous understanding of this class as merely honorary needs to be nuanced, in particular regarding the second half of the century. From 1850, the extant nominations of new members illustrates that although learning and erudition was important throughout the period, scientific skill and profound research, proven by publications, were crucial for this proto-humanistic field of knowledge. Moreover, as the political and cultural sphere seized to be arenas from where the class recruited members, the second half of the century saw an increasing population of university professors linked to traditional humanistic disciplines, noted for their scientific creed, rather than their cultural standing. As a result, the article concludes that although other scenarios would have been viable, the “learned class” developed into a “humanistic class” during the second half of 19th century.

- The purpose of this article is to explore the formation of a new scholarly pedagogical persona through a study of Carl Ulric Broocman (1783-1812), one the most influential Swedish educators of the early 19th century. By analyzing how Broocman presented himself and his scholarly ideals to his peers, identifying what repertoires of virtues he drew on and what exemplary models he invoked, the article explores the tensions between old and new masculinities as regards the role of both teacher and scholar. Furthermore, the article pursues the question of how Broocman was described as having embodied these virtues himself after his premature death and how his own failing body and suffering due to prolonged sickness were incorporated as aspects of a pedagogical persona that lingered in the public sphere.

- Antiken har alltid varit en tacksam tidsperiod för filmmakare. Men hur har antiken skildrats i olika tider och medier? I Svärd, sandaler och skandaler undersöker en rad skribenter från olika ämnen de uttryck antiken har tagit sig på film och i tv. Boken är den första i sitt slag på svenska. I fem avdelningar behandlas relationen mellan den antika historien och dess sentida gestaltningar i rörliga bilder, alltifrån filmens tidiga glansdagar kring år 1900 till dagens tv-skildringar. Långt ifrån alltid är det historieskrivning eller litteratur om antiken som har bestämt hur epoken framställts i visuella medier. Till exempel har scenografi och kläder bidragit till att prägla föreställningar om vad som utmärkte antiken. Epoken har även använts i politiska och ideologiska syften. Exempelvis har Noa, Leonidas, Scipio Africanus och kung Arthur varit föremål för omtolkningar som syftat till att fylla dagspolitiska behov i fascismens Italien, efterkrigstidens USA eller det unga 2000-talets Storbritannien. Svärd, sandaler och skandaler vänder sig främst till studenter och forskare i humanistiska ämnen som historia och arkeologi samt antik-, film- och religionsvetenskap, men är givetvis intressant för alla som är intresserade av hur dåtiden gestaltas i rörliga bilder.

- Although established forms of peer review are often criticized for being slow, secretive, and even unfair, they are repeatedly mentioned by academics as the most important indicator of quality in scholarly publishing. In many countries, the peer review of books is a less codified practice than that of journal articles or conference papers, and the processes and actors involved are far from uniform. In Sweden, the review process of books has seldom been formalized. However, more formal peer review of books has been identified as a response to the increasing importance placed on streamlined peer-reviewed publishing of journal articles in English, which has been described as a direct challenge to more pluralistic publication patterns found particularly in the humanities. In this study, we focus on a novel approach to book review, Kriterium, where an independent portal maintained by academic institutions oversees the reviewing of academic books. The portal administers peer reviews, providing a mark of quality through a process which involves reviewers, an academic coordinator, and an editorial board. The paper studies how this process functions in practice by exploring materials concerning 24 scholarly books reviewed within Kriterium. Our analysis specifically targets tensions identified in the process of reviewing books with a focus on three main themes, namely the intended audience, the edited volume, and the novel role of the academic coordinator. Moreover, we find that the two main aims of the portal–quality enhancement (making research better) and certification (displaying that research is of high quality)–are recurrent in deliberations made in the peer review process. Consequently, we argue that reviewing procedures and criteria of quality are negotiated within a broader discussion where more traditional forms of publishing are challenged by new standards and evaluation practices.
