  • Ingår i: ECSQARU.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the application of a modal language à la Hennessy-Milner to the specific domain of evidence-based trust estimations. In particular, we refer to a context-aware notion of computational trust joining in a quantitative setting both assessment of subjective opinions and third-party recommendations. Moreover, for a comprehensive analysis of the proposed logics, we offer an axiomatization and provide soundness and completeness results.

  • Genetic influences on the retention of inorganic mercury.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Archives of environmental & occupational health. - 1933-8244. ; 60:1, s. 17-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mercury is eliminated as glutathione (GSH) conjugates. GSH production is mediated by glutamyl-cysteine ligase (GCL), and conjugation by glutathione S-transferases (GST). This study tested if polymorphisms in GCL and GST genes modify mercury retention in humans exposed to elemental mercury vapor. Total mercury concentrations in whole blood, plasma and urine, and genotypes for GCLC, GCLM, GSTA1, GSTM1, GSTP1, and GSTT1 were determined in 309 gold miners, gold buyers and controls. The presence of the GCLM-588T allele was associated with increased blood, plasma and urine mercury levels. These results indicate that genotypes with decreased GSH availability for mercury conjugation affect the metabolism of inorganic mercury.

  • EAACI position statement on asthma exacerbations and severe asthma
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Allergy. - : Wiley. - 0105-4538. ; 68:12, s. 1520-1531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Asthma exacerbations and severe asthma are linked with high morbidity, significant mortality and high treatment costs. Recurrent asthma exacerbations cause a decline in lung function and, in childhood, are linked to development of persistent asthma. This position paper, from the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, highlights the shortcomings of current treatment guidelines for patients suffering from frequent asthma exacerbations and those with difficult-to-treat asthma and severe treatment-resistant asthma. It reviews current evidence that supports a call for increased awareness of (i) the seriousness of asthma exacerbations and (ii) the need for novel treatment strategies in specific forms of severe treatment-resistant asthma. There is strong evidence linking asthma exacerbations with viral airway infection and underlying deficiencies in innate immunity and evidence of a synergism between viral infection and allergic mechanisms in increasing risk of exacerbations. Nonadherence to prescribed medication has been identified as a common clinical problem amongst adults and children with difficult-to-control asthma. Appropriate diagnosis, assessment of adherence and other potentially modifiable factors (such as passive or active smoking, ongoing allergen exposure, psychosocial factors) have to be a priority in clinical assessment of all patients with difficult-to-control asthma. Further studies with improved designs and new diagnostic tools are needed to properly characterize (i) the pathophysiology and risk of asthma exacerbations, and (ii) the clinical and pathophysiological heterogeneity of severe asthma.

  • The predictive value of the clinical sign of limited hip abduction for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Medicinski glasnik : official publication of the Medical Association of Zenica-Doboj Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina. - 1840-2445. ; 15:2, s. 174-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim To assess the relationship between the clinical sign of limited hip abduction and developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Methods A research was conducted on 450 newborns at the Neonatal Unit at the Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Clinic of the University Clinical Centre, Tuzla, between 30th August 2011 and 30th April 2012. Clinical (degree of hip abduction) and ultrasound examination of all newborns' hips were performed using the Graf method on their first day of life. Results Clinical sign of limited hip abduction showed significant predictive value for DDH. There were 67 (14.7%) newborns with the clinical sign of limited hip abduction, of which 26 (5.7%) were on the left hip, 11 (2.4%) on the right hip and 30 (6.6%) on both hips. Limited hip abduction had a positive predictive value (PPV) of 40.3% and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 80.4% for DDH. Conclusion Limited hip abduction, especially unilateral, is a useful and important clinical sign of DDH. Doctors, who perform the first examination of the child after birth, would have to pay attention to this clinical sign. Newborns with this clinical sign would have to go to an ultrasound examination of the hips for further diagnosis.

  • Can/should fathers be parents too? On shared post-separation parenting
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Zagreb Applied Ethics Conference 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The presentation will address the ethics and policy of parenting. Some of the questions that I will explore are: who is a parent? How do people acquire responsibilities for children? How do the relationships between adults influence, or should influence, these responsibilities? What are (or might be) the implications of mothers and fathers equally sharing responsibilities for children? Who, if anyone, should be awarded precedence in cases of competition for parenting? In pondering these questions, I will comparatively look at the Swedish and the Romanian cases of the culture and policy of parenting. The two European countries are examples of quite different post-separation and post-divorce parenting. In Sweden, it is highly expected that, following separation of the parents, they will both continue to function as parents with equal rights and responsibilities. In Romania this is rare, and children are placed with one parent (usually the mother), with the other parent being awarded (at best) visitation rights, and (usually) financial responsibilities. Recent changes in legislation, and tendencies in European legislation, shift towards shared parenting – and this collides with long established beliefs and expectations, and will have a strong impact on children as well as their parents and society at large.
