  • Risk, Science and Policy : A Treacherous Triangle
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ethical Perspectives. - : PEETERS. - 1370-0049 .- 1783-1431. ; 25:3, s. 391-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decisions on risk are often frustrated by conflicts and uncertainties at the science-policy interface. This article shows that there is considerable scope for improving the decision-making process and in particular its use of science. Philosophical tools and distinctions can have a key role in eliminating or coming to grips with risk-related uncertainties. Many of the so-called scientific controversies are in fact not conflicts within science, but between science and science denial or other forms of pseudoscience. In these cases, the alleged uncertainties can be dissolved by throwing out pseudoscientific claims and fabricated controversies. A significant part of the remaining uncertainty is not decision-relevant although it seems to be so. Two simple symmetry tests are introduced for investigating whether an uncertainty is specific enough to be more troublesome for the option it has been associated with than for other options in the decision. Finally, decision theory and ethics provide means for dealing with the remaining decision-relevant scientific uncertainties. One of the ethical tools that can be used for this purpose is hypothetical retrospection. This method consists in systematically deliberating on how we will in the future evaluate the decisions that we make today, under various assumptions about other potential future developments. The purpose of this process is to come as close as possible to the ideal of making a decision that will be ethically defensible whatever happens.

  • The Knowledge Triangle Cards : Supporting university-society collaborations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th European Conference on Games Based Learning, ECGBL 2017. - : Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. - 9781911218562 ; , s. 807-813
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Knowledge Triangle Cards (KT Cards) is an educational tool designed for a pilot course at Mälardalen University which aims to help students to contextualize studies to global and national societal needs and to collaborate more closely with society (business and municipalities). The aim is to have students become better at choosing assignments, projects and thesis topics that tie in closer to the labour market and societal needs. The KT Cards are based on a traditional deck of cards and the suits represent different aspects of the knowledge context: opportunity, process, outcome, and stakeholder. Additionally, a set of gamified and non-gamified exercises were designed to prompt reflection and discussion about how student projects incorporate these aspects. A pilot study was carried out in order to test and develop the educational tools and future studies. A total of 24 students and teachers participated and data was collected through observations and feedback from participants. The study indicates that the gamified activities could influence reflection and discussion by speeding up pace of the activity and affecting group dynamics. Two aspects were identified as potentially prompting gamification-shorter time frames and having multiple groups completing the activities. Further studies will look more closely at these aspects for designing gamification and how this affects discussion. The next design iteration will implement minor changes to the visual design of the cards and review how the prototype could provide students with know-how on university-society collaborations and a deeper understanding of the Knowledge Triangle concept.

  • Seminarium slagverk inriktning orkester : PASIC 2020
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (film/video) (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The basic distinctions in Der Streit
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - Berlin, Germany : WALTER DE GRUYTER & CO. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 194, s. 137-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents Ingarden's views on what he calls "modes of being" ("ways of existence") and "existential moments"; the latter being constitutive parts of the former. Mainstream analytic philosophy has been dominated by the view that "existence" can mean only existence simpliciter. Ingarden, on the other hand, discerns four possible modes of being, one of which is of special interest to semiotics: purely intentional being. It is of relevance for the ontological understanding not only of texts, but also of pictures and other sign-related entities. At the end, an extrapolated Ingardenian semiotic triangle is presented.

  • Medusa’s Gaze and Geijerstam’s Gay Science in the Swedish fin de siècle
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Humanities. - : MDPI. - 2076-0787. ; 11:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gustaf af Geijerstam’s Medusas hufvud (Medusa’s Head, 1895) is one of the “account-settling novels” of the late nineteenth century. These novels reflect on the aesthetic reorientation after the breakdown of the “Eighties movement” in Sweden. One important dimension of this transformation was the growing emphasis on gendered visions of authorship. I argue that Geijerstam’s novel is an attempt to create a male author role and a male intellectual sphere. The establishment of a male literary sphere requires homosocial desire, an artistic passion that Geijerstam understands as similar and different from sexual desire. This terminology is employed, after Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, to insist on a productive continuum between the repositioning on the literary field that the novel represents and the thinly disguised homosexual tensions between its three male characters. However, the homosexual tensions are also related to secrecy, disgust, and terror (most clearly visible in the important Medusa motif). I finally argue that Geijerstam employs the erotic triangle, where the woman functions as a “mediator” for a relationship between the men, as a plot device that lets him simultaneously explore and dissimulate this homosocial desire.

  • Gestures of Defiance: The Raised Fist, Glitter, Sex and Latex
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Talk as part of the exhibition "Gestures of Defiance" at the Vita Kuben, Norrlandsoperan Umea, Sweden, May 2015.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This talk discusses queer strategies of resistance including the raised fist, glitter, sex and latex. The discussion is in dialogue with and will include examples from Mary Coble's exhibition "Gestures of Defiance" opening at the Vita Kuben on Friday May 8th in collaboration with the debut of the "Performing Defiance" a live work created for the MADE Festival 2015 at the Norrlandsoperan. On both occasions Coble focuses on the raised fist as a repeated symbol of protest. The artist questions contemporary discourses of progress and success, for instance in regards to homonationalist takes on gay rights and the mainstreaming and commercialization of LGBTQ Pride marches which initially were part of social activist movements with the goal to claim space and create visibility. Coble uses the raised fist as an act of opposition to structures of exclusion and as a reminder to protest the discrimination of society’s marginalised groups. The performance includes a pink triangle, the iconic and reclaimed symbol for homosexuality, which Coble activates with the tactical frivolity of glitter bombing. In the performance piece Coble will embody a protesting figure jumping with their fist raised over an exaggerated period of time, stretching this expression of dissatisfaction to it’s potential in a durational act of resistance. The repeated gestures of protest will be vacillating between excitement and failure. Adding a pink latex triangle and an abundance of glitter to the act of raising a clenched fist, the artist activates a number of codes, traditions and tactics from queer history and counter-culture. Coble thus combines both the exhilaration and exhaustion of an extended protest that allows for unpredictability, messiness and failure as strategies in the fight for non-conformative values.
