- In what way/ways – if at all – are the computer and the internet tools for individuals’ roles as citizens in the Swedish working class?What is new information and communication technology’s significance – if any – for individuals’ identities as citizens within Swedish working class culture?The empirical results are discouraging for advocates who have put their trust in new information and communication technology as a potential civic tool. For instance, the study reveals that the computer and the internet can only be considered as marginal phenomena in the everyday lives of the Swedish working class, for these tools are barely used, and further, are perceived as difficult to operate. The study also reveals that new information and communication technology is not viewed as a contributing factor to the working class’ outlooks toward and insights into society. Instead it is concluded that watching TV and listening to the radio – to a far greater extent than the use of the computer and the internet – are activities related to the Swedish working class’ identities as citizens.This study is a critical interrogation into the widespread claims about the computer's and the internet's potential to empower democracy. Through interviews with adult family members of fifteen Swedish working class households, the study explores the following two questions:

- This work in two parts – entitled Symbolic Function and Meaning: An Investigation of the Species-Specific Essence of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy – could be characterized as an interpretation of the above-mentioned therapy and the meaning of its particular experience. In the first part, besides a licentiate thesis, four topics are examined: the therapeutic framework, the transference – especially in neurotic form – and its interpretation, psychotherapy with borderline patients, and therapy with psychotics. This has been done by combining studies of literature with analyses of the transference meaning of a number of illuminative clinical examples or vignettes – anecdotes, i.e. narratives with a significant point – the main part of which are the outcome of the author’s own activity in the form of participant observation as a psychotherapist. The general conclusion is that promoting the symbolic function is the essential ingredient in the psychoanalytic form of therapy – its very rationality – and how it effectuates its unique therapeutic potentiality; a characterization which, despite obvious differences in the adequacy of symbolic functioning, is valid irrespective of whether the patient is diagnosed as neurotic, borderline or psychotic. In the second part – essentially of a theoretical nature in contrast to the preceding one – the study is influenced by philosophical hermeneutics, and in this process assimilates its particular conceptuality. The continued analysis of the research object shows that it is misleading, in view of its ontology, to conceptualize it in medical terms as treatment. Aimed at promoting the symbolic function by the transference being interpreted, psychoanalytic psychotherapy instead operates in an ethical dimension and is rather what Aristotle terms a praxis, on the one hand; on the other hand, it is moreover implicitly human science action research into intersubjective appropriation of meaning. In this latter respect, the investigation highlights the fact that the very special interview method in the form of free associations, with their reflexivity, gives the psychoanalytic form of psychotherapy the potential to be not only a qualitative research method but also simultaneously metaresearch. The analyses of the transference meaning of clinical anecdotes in the first part have thereby been able to be methodologically clarified retroactively as psychoanalytic metaresearch.

Varieties of Supernatural Experience : the Case of High-Functioning Autism

- It is argued in the cognitive science of religion (CSR) that the empathic ability to ‘mindread’ others underpins the experience of supernatural communication with gods, ghosts, and spirits. As autism is characterized by mentalizing difficulties, CSR scholars have expected autistic individuals would find supernatural agency incomprehensible. This thesis however turns the question around: why do autistic individuals engage intimately in supernatural relations, despite the social difficulties they face in everyday life?The thesis aims to provide new insights on autistic and religious cognition through examination of supernatural descriptions provided by 17 young, high-functioning autistic adults (16–21 years of age) who label themselves as ‘religious’ or ‘spiritual’. The research questions explore: (1) cognitive aspects of experienced interaction with invisible agents, compared with human interaction, (2) the prevalence of unusual embodied experiences (e.g. feeling touch and seeing visions without external input) and its role in attributions of supernatural agency, and (3) the psychological function of parasocial (fiction-based) interaction in imaginary realms.This interdisciplinary project draws on work undertaken in the cognitive science of religion, cognitive and critical autism research, and psychological anthropology. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods are employed to enable a kaleidoscopic outlook on the topics explored, and to promote a dialogue between idiographically and nomothetically oriented scholars. The study provides first-person perspectives on religious and autistic cognition, which is understood as dynamic interaction between embrained, embodied, encultured and situated input.It is argued in Publication I that ‘bodiless’ interaction facilitates mentalizing, also in relation to invisible agents, as no cross-modal synchronization of mimicry, body language and intonation is required. Publication II examines the prevalence of unusual, embodied experiences in autism, and it is proposed that supernatural attributions offer enchantment and sense-making of potentially frightening experiences. Results from Publication III suggest that imaginary worlds and parasocial relations function as ‘simulators’ that autistic individuals use to rehearse social interaction. Publication IV offers a theoretical and methodological discussion regarding the study of atypical cognition. Importantly, this thesis illustrates that these imaginative autistic participants are not drawn to supernatural frame- works in spite of, but because of the supernatural and parasocial characters these provide.

Mänsklig mekanik och besjälade maskiner : koreografiska perspektiv på mänskliga kvaliteter i kroppars rörelse

- Idag kan vi fånga och skapa rörelse på sätt som tidigare inte varit möjligt. I datorn kan kropp, rum, tid och rörelse hanteras som separata element - delar som går att plocka isär och sätta samman på nya sätt. Med digital teknologi kan kroppens sensoriska och motoriska förmågor förlängas, förflyttas och förvandlas så att vi kan beröra och röra oss genom kroppar och objekt på avstånd. Kroppsligheten förändras när vi kan programmera rörelse och dansa genom en annan kropp än vår egen. I denna avhandling är forskningsfrågan: Hur kan digital teknologi användas i koreografiska verk och processer för att fånga mänskliga kvaliteter i kroppars rörelse? Forskningsprojektets teoretiska huvudspår är Don Ihdes experimentella postfenomenologi. Avhandlingen består av sju kapitel och en DVD med videoutsnitt från de koreografiska verken. Det första kapitlet är en inledning till avhandlingsarbetet. Nästa kapitel tar utgångspunkt i det koreografiska arbetet med att programmera en dansande industrirobot i verket Orfeus klagan och fångar upp frågeställningar som uppstått i arbetet med tidigare koreografiska verk. Det tredje kapitlet beskriver projektets teoretiska utgångspunkter och influenser. Därefter följer ett kapitel som beskriver arbetet med utställningen Navigation, forskningsprojektets första serie av interaktiva mekatroniska och virtuella dansare. Det femte kapitlet diskuterar utformandet av koreografiska metoder i arbetet med mänskliga dansarna i scenföreställningen Hybrid, väsen och labyrinter, som rör frågeställningar om att vara människa, djur eller maskin. Kapitel sex behandlar hur olika teorier, teknologier och koreografiska metoder kan bidra till att skifta mellan perspektiv som synliggör det mänskliga i kroppars rörelse som multistabilt fenomen. Aspekter som framträtt i avhandlingsarbetet samlas upp i kapitel sju i form av fyra Komprimerade klassiker, en serie koreografiska installationer varav en specifikt utformats för DVDn.

The Disruptive Semiotic: A Kristevan Reading of Thomas Hardy’s Fiction

- Avhandlingen analyserar Thomas Hardys romaner med syfte att utröna varför de oftast väcker en känsla av ambivalens i läsaren. Med utgångspunkt ifrån Julia Kristevas teori om det semiotiska, enligt vilken intertextualitet uppstår genom en transposition av diskurser som har sin grund i primärprocesserna, åskådliggör avhandlingen hur intertextualiteten i Hardys berättarteknik bidrar till att skapa ambivalens. Intertextualiteten i Hardys fiktion utforskas här som härledande av de idéer Hardy tycks ha fängslats av under sina studier då man finner dem i hans anteckningar. Tesen vidgar diskussionen om Kristevas teori om intertextualitet i samband med Hardys fiktion genom att inkludera Jacques Lacans teori om driftprocessens dynamik och lusten. Genom att uppmärksamma en korrespondens mellan idéer i Hardys romaner och de grundläggande principerna i Kristevas och Lacans teorier, används Kristevas dynamiska syn på intertextualitet som process, ett frånstötande (abjektion) för att förklara denna korrespondens av idéer. Då Kristevas föreställning om intertextualitet anknyter till hennes syn på subjektets process, stödjer tesen hennes dynamiska syn på betydelseprocessen. Således pekas intertextuella knutpunkter ut som bevis på frånstötningsprocessen som skapar textambivalens. Avhandlingen använder sig av Roland Barthes fria associationsteknik för att få fram den flerlagrade dimensionen av Hardys text. Den fria associationstekniken avgränsas däremot till att tolka undertexten som återför till Hardys anteckningar men även till hans innersta väsen, i den bemärkelse att tesen stödjer synen på subjektets process. Även om avhandlingen i huvudsak är psykoanalytisk är den inte det i strängt freudiansk bemärkelse. Med hänvisning till Hardys motstånd till Realismen till förmån för ”inspirerad Konst” stödjer tesen synen på Hardy som konstnärligt lagd genom att lyfta fram indicier som tyder på Jagets frånstötningsprocess i Hardys romaner. Avhandlingen tolkar således Thomas Hardys romaner utefter de olika sätt den dynamiska betydelseprocessen tar sig uttryck för att skapa skiftande innebörder.
