  • Narrative glimpses of organizing
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: CULTURE AND ORGANIZATION. - 1475-9551 .- 1477-2760.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gareth Morgan (1986) is famous for drawing attention to the key role of metaphors (metaphors) in organization theory. He suggested that various definitions of organizations are based on different metaphors, often unconscious ones. In this paper we set out with metaphors contained in Morgan's book (1986), but altered, re-imagined supplemented by us. Also, somewhat reinterpreted. The aim of the paper is, now as it was then, not to serve as a research article, but, rather, a kind of intertextual journey in search of narrative intricacy but without wandering off into chaos.

  • Teoria organizacji i literatura piękna w jednym stoją domu?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: CULTURE AND ORGANIZATION. - 1475-9551 .- 1477-2760.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organisation theory began to be appreciated in the 1960s when it became clear that neither economics nor psychology could explain the phenomena of organising purely in the language of economics, whereas these phenomena were becoming more and more central to the functioning of modern society. Enterprises and organised institutions were becoming increasingly complex and their activities could not be explained by a combination of economic laws and psychological observations. The machine metaphor that used to dominate before was now replaced by an organic metaphor that seemed complex enough to capture the complexity of the phenomenon itself. But the practices of organising outgrew even this metaphor and it became evident that we need even more complex ways to account for what organisations do. One of the propositions for how to live up to the living complexity is the language of fiction. Narrative knowledge and narrative form are good ways to an incisive insight into concrete and lived organisational experience.

  • Platformised possessions and relational labour
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Marketing Theory. - 1470-5931 .- 1741-301X. ; 24:1, s. 23-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we focus on relational labour as a form of emotional labour associated with the use of platformised possessions, such as pins, messages, photos, videos and playlists hosted on digital platforms, to maintain relationships with friends and family. We argue that this ongoing effort is a type of consumer labour because it generates profitable engagements for digital platforms, which intentionally exploit negative emotions, namely, anxiety and guilt, associated with maintaining social connections. Drawing on 47 depth interviews with people living in the South of the UK, we identify the direct (communication via platforms) and indirect (information gathered via platforms to attain relational goals) relational work undertaken by consumers via their platformised possessions. We then consider the emotional experiences related to this work, demonstrating how such experiences differ from reports of possession work on material goods, while maintaining platform profits. Recognising that this work is the basis of much platform engagement, and hence profit, we further show how this effort becomes a form of unpaid labour. We thus contribute to the nascent literature on platformisation and emotion, to broader studies of possession work, and to critical marketing scholarship on consumer labour.

  • Introduction: Revitalizing Collegiality: Restoring Faculty Authority in Universities
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Research in the Sociology of Organizations. - 0733-558X. ; 87, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collegiality is often discussed and analyzed as a challenged form of governance, a form of working that used to function well in universities prior to the emergence of contemporary and modern forms of governance. This seems to suggest that collegiality used to dominate, while other forms of governance are now taking over. The papers in volume 86 of this special issue support the notion of challenged collegiality, but also show that for the most part, nostalgic notions of “the good old days” are neither true nor helpful if we are to revitalize academic collegiality. After examining whether a golden age of collegiality ever existed, we discuss why collegiality matters. Exploring what are often described as limitations or “dark sides” of collegiality, we address four such “dark sides” related to slow decisionmaking, conflicts, parochialism, and diversity. This is followed by a discussion of how these limitations may be handled and what measures must be taken to maintain and develop collegiality. With a brief summary of the remaining papers under two headings, “Maintaining collegiality” and “Revitalizing collegiality,” we preview the rest of this volume.

  • Knowledge and belongingness: experiences of a programme for parents of children with autism
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Educational Research. - 1002-5731. ; 66:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Whilst lack of social support has been associated with stress for parents of children with autism, group programmes for parents which bring together those with similar experiences and provide learning and resources can offer a form of social support. Although studies of such programmes suggest positive outcomes, including in terms of children’s adaptive behaviour, research examining parental perspectives on interventions that set out specifically to provide support to reduce stress in parents of children with autism is still scarce. Purpose Set in a Swedish context, the aim was to investigate whether a group education programme for parents of children with autism could be viewed as a site of informal social support and considered fertile ground for procuring social capital. Method Participants were parents of children who had been given an autism diagnosis at around three years of age. They had all taken part in a group education programme designed to facilitate experience-sharing in meetings between parents. The parents were interviewed about their experiences and perceptions of its influence on their everyday lives. Data were analysed qualitatively, using a Community of Practice lens. Findings The in-depth analysis indicated that, according to participants, the programme had helped alleviate feelings of isolation and improve parenting confidence. The findings speak to the importance of personal investment for knowledge acquisition and implementation, demonstrating the connections between the acquisition of social capital and membership of a Community of Practice. Conclusion Building on previous research emphasising the role of social support for the quality of life for parents of children with autism, the study highlights how a parental group education programme can represent a valuable social setting which is conducive for learning and resource procurement. Knowledge and belongingness in a social community – which enables access to, and sharing of, resources – are both of crucial relevance to outcomes and quality of life for families.

  • Non-professional versus professional investors’ trust in financial analysts’ recommendations and influences on investments
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Review of Behavioral Finance. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1940-5979 .- 1940-5987. ; 16:5, s. 860-882
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The paper aims to investigate differences in non-professional and professional stock investors’ trust in and tendency to follow financial analysts’ buy and sell recommendations. Design/methodology/approach: Online experiment conducted in Sweden in March 2022 comparing non-professional private investors (n = 80), professional investors (n = 33), and master students in finance (n = 28). Information was presented about four company stocks listed on the New York stock exchange. Two stocks were buy-recommended and two stocks sell-recommended by financial analysts. For one stock of each type, the recommendation was presented to participants. Dependent variables were predictions of the stock price after three months, ratings of confidence in the predictions and choices of holding, buying or selling the stock. Ratings were also made of the importance of presented stock-related information as well as trust in analysts’ skill and integrity. Findings: More positive return predictions were made of buy-recommended than sell-recommended stocks. Non-professionals and to some degree finance students tended to trust financial analysts more than professional investors did and they were more influenced by the presentation of the buy recommendations. All groups made too optimistic return predictions, but the professionals were less confident in their predictions, more likely to sell the stocks and lost less on their investments. Originality/value: A new finding is that non-professional stock investors are more likely than professional stock investors to trust financial analysts and follow their recommendations. It suggests that financial analysts’ recommendations influence non-professional investors to take unmotivated investment risks. Non-professionals in the stock market should hence be advised to exercise more caution in following analysts’ recommendations.

  • Reducing the contingency of the world: magic, oracles, and machine-learning technology
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: AI and Society. - London : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0951-5666 .- 1435-5655. ; 39, s. 183-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of magic is frequently used to discuss technology, a practice considered useful by some with others arguing that viewing technology as magic precludes a proper understanding of technology. The concept of magic is especially prominent in discussions of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Based on an anthropological perspective, this paper juxtaposes ML technology with magic, using descriptions drawn from a project on an ML-powered system for propulsion control of cargo ships. The paper concludes that prior scholarly work on technology has failed to both define magic adequately and use research into magic. It also argues that although the distinction between ML technology and magic is important, recognition of the similarities is useful for understanding ML technology. © 2022, The Author(s).

  • Suspicions of Occult Medicine Murders in the Context of Democratic Elections in Contemporary Côte d’Ivoire
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Scientific Journal, ESJ. - 1857-7881 .- 1857-7431. ; 20:2, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article contributes to contemporary discourses on so-called occult medicine practices and the associated human murders within the context of democratic elections in Côte d’Ivoire. The study is grounded in anthropological fieldwork conducted in Abidjan from 2018 to 2020. Additionally, information on occult medicine murders from local and international media has been gathered to enrich the reflections further. The study reveals that in the prevalent public discourse, politicians are accused of employing occult medicine to enhance their power and ensure their success by collaborating with ritual specialists. The paper argues that, in everyday discourse, occult medicine murders can be perceived as being ontologically motivated.

  • Collegiality washing? New translations of collegial practices
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Research in the Sociology of Organizations. - 0733-558X. ; 87, s. 157-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past few decades, university reforms in line with management and enterprise ideals have been well documented. Changes in the ideals underlying the missions of universities have led to changes in their modes of governing and organizing, which in turn drive further transformation of their missions. One set of reforms in Swedish higher education has been the dissolution of collegial bodies and procedures. At the same time, in recent years, we have witnessed an increased interest in collegiality and a reintroduction of collegial bodies and procedures. New translations of collegiality appear not only in how universities are organized, but also in other core aspects of research and higher education. We review examples of peer reviewing, research assessment, and direct recruitment of professors and ask: Can these new translations of collegiality be understood as a revitalization of collegiality, or is it – to draw a parallel with greenwashing – rather a matter of collegiality-washing?

  • Traces of anti-programs against COVID-19: retailers' responses aimed at mitigating the spread of the virus
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IN ORGANIZATIONS AND MANAGEMENT. - 1746-5648 .- 1746-5656.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe aim of the paper is to demonstrate how programs of action and anti-programs, concepts developed by Bruno Latour, are of excellent value in interpreting current world developments through a study of the effects and responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThe study was inspired by actor-network theory (ANT) and Bruno Latour's inclusion of nonhuman actors. In this case, I have studied how signs and other artifacts leave traces of anti-programs against the COVID-19 pandemic. Observations, in physical stores and online, are presented as the main empirical material used to identify traces of five anti-programs.FindingsThe five types of anti-programs identified were, namely (1) fighting the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic through prompts, (2) verbalizing responsibility, (3) creating a feeling of collectivity, (4) aspiring to heroism and (5) mobilizing support for continued business. The anti-programs were organized via a connection between human and nonhuman actors.Originality/valueThe study illustrates the usefulness of Latour's terminology in exploring contemporary sequences of events by means of using programs of action and anti-programs to study the case of retailers' responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study echoes ANT and Latour's ideas about including nonhuman actors in social studies. Moreover, the study demonstrates how these concepts can be productively introduced into studies of complex phenomena, by discussing the choice of viewpoint, how actors can be conjoined into one entity, the inclusion of nonobservable actors and the co-existence of an actor in both the program of action and the anti-programs.

  • Transforming brownfields into urban greenspaces: A working process for stakeholder analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203 .- 1932-6203. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban greenspaces (UGS) provide a range of ecosystem services and are instrumental in ensuring the liveability of cities. Whilst incorporating UGS in increasingly denser cities is a challenge to planners, brownfields form a latent resource with the potential of being converted into UGS. Transformation of brownfields to greenspaces, however, requires engagement of a variety of stakeholders, from providers to users. The overall aim of this study was to support effective and realistic realisations of UGS in the context of urban brownfields’ regeneration and stakeholder engagement. A working process was developed to: 1) integrate methods relevant for UGS realisation for a) identification and categorising of relevant stakeholders, b) mapping their interests and resources, c) identifying various challenges, and d) matching those challenges with the mapped resources over the timeline of UGS development; and 2) apply these methods to assess relevance and shortcomings. The methods were applied to a study site in Sweden, and data was collected using a questionnaire survey. The survey received 31 responses and the respondents’ comments indicated that the combination of several uses, especially integrated with an urban park, is preferable. Visualisation was an important component for data analysis: stakeholder categorisation was effectively visualised using a Venn diagram, and the needed mobilisation of resources among stakeholders to manage identified challenges was visualised using a timeline. The analysis demonstrates the need for collaboration between stakeholders to achieve an effective realisation of UGS and how multiple methods can be used in concert to map stakeholders, preferences, challenges, and resources for a particular site. The application at a study site provided site-specific data but the developed stakeholder categorisation, and the method for matching identified challenges with the stakeholders’ resources using a timeline, can be generalised to applications at other sites.

  • Organising Integration Support for Recent Immigrants in Sweden as a Spectacle: Practices and Consequences
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: puntOrg - International Journal. - 2499-1333. ; 8:1, s. 78-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores organising outside organisations in the context of the labour market integration of recent immigrants in Sweden. More specifically, it examines integration support events organised as a means of facilitating the efficient employment integration of recent immigrants. It draws on Guy Debord’s ideas of the spectacle in modern society and practice- based approaches to organising to explore how these events function as part of an integration spectacle as they produce and reproduce images of change and renewal where immigrants become employed and employers hire them, obscuring an otherwise sombre reality of inequalities. I use this lens to critically engage with field material collected as part of an ethnographically inspired field study of two annually held integration support events in Sweden, the Your Day! event and the Finally a Job! recruitment day, aimed at facilitating recent immigrants’ employment integration.

  • Frontline bureaucrats in wildlife management: Caught in the dilemma between effectiveness and responsiveness
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environmental Policy and Governance. - : Wiley. - 1756-932X .- 1756-9338. ; 32:1, s. 17-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Frontline bureaucrats are positioned at the interface between citizens and the state. They convert political resolution into action and in effect form the core of many public decisions through interaction and communication with both the recipients of those decisions and upper management levels that initiate them. However, dilemmas often arise when frontline bureaucrats attempt to translate political goals and strategies into local administrative praxis. The case of large carnivore management in Sweden will be used to demonstrate the insuperable difficulties that can arise when managers simultaneously need to balance the bureaucratic tasks of planning, executing, and evaluating performed decisions with attending to calls for increased responsiveness to public values in order to improve the delivery of service. This responsiveness is typically reflected through the new principles of public participation and collaboration, which are added to the bureaucracy to support the integration of broader sets of interests, experiences, and knowledge. In such an environment, the work of frontline managers becomes even more crucial in order to balance and align policy goals with the need to enhance public involvement. Our study reveals that in striving to meet the formal policy requirement to implement and lead collaboration (which in turn creates the central dilemma that concerns us here) managers develop strategies to secure effectiveness rather than responsiveness. Actually, they have few possibilities to do, otherwise when the latest policy edict clearly instructs the authorities to oversee the effective implementation and achievement of goals, leaving little opportunity to pursue genuine collaboration.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Management Journal. - : Elsevier. - 0263-2373 .- 1873-5681.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How various central government agencies (CGAs) in Sweden respond to the contemporary and highly digitalized media landscape and explore intricate patterns of the ambiguity in organizational and media relations are discussed in this study. Organizational responses caused by the perceptions of the media landscape on governmental agencies are analyzed as a process of bureaucratization. This study suggests that the agencies do not attempt to defend themselves; their efforts are directed toward maintaining internal trust and trust of the public. The studied responses turned out to result in decision-making aspects as preemptive measures, casting light on the significances of the ideal hierarchical authority. Furthermore, the extent of openness in relation to the communication showed rule-based actions. Additionally, the consequences of the media pressure for the more general codes of conduct among the bureaucrats led to the ideal of professional staffing. Our contribution is twofold. First, we argue that the contemporary media landscape – including all institutionalized (i.e., both digital and conventional) forms, structures, platforms, and interfaces – has led to an increased self-control in CGAs; and secondly, that the bureaucratization turns professional employees into “passionate bureaucrats.”

  • Deliberative safety for industrial intelligent human-robot collaboration: Regulatory challenges and solutions for taking the next step towards industry 4.0
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0736-5845 .- 1879-2537. ; 78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In previous scholarly literature, safety is understood as a main obstacle for introducing human-robot collaboration in industrial production. This interdisciplinary paper is concerned with the safety and regulation of human-robot collaboration and contribute to this debate through a case study of stakeholders in Sweden, exploring the views of the involved stakeholders which is largely absent in previous research literature. The case study concludes that while stressing some potential benefits, stakeholders within the industry are generally reluctant to human-robot collaboration. Current regulation and safety standards are understood to be one of the prominent obstacles to such solutions. Based on the perspectives of the stakeholders as well as an analysis of current regulation and safety standards, the paper identifies the following problems with current regulation: (i) existing categories and conceptualizations used to guide safety evaluation are problematic, (ii) intelligence and autonomous aspects of collaborative systems are not sufficiently addressed, (iii) current standards do not enable evaluation of the trade off between safety, efficiency and flexibility, and (iv) the regulation has a lack of focus on active safety and using the control system as a safety measure. In an attempt to address these identified problems, the difference between traditional collaborative robots and intelligent human-robot collaboration is analyzed in the paper and a new safety approach is suggested, called Deliberative safety, which allows the humans and robots to switch between different safety measures based on the need for flexibility or efficiency to reach production goals. While considering system performance, we propose a taxonomy to better support the design of deliberative safety as well as five safety measures to use in a deliberative safety approach. These measures include available measures like perimeter safety, zone safety and reactive safety to more advanced measures like planned and active safety, and when used together, they can enable intelligent human-robot collaboration.

  • Expectations about voluntary efforts in collaborative governance and the fit with perceived prerequisites of intrinsic motivation in Sweden?s ecosystem-based moose management system
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Society. - : Resilience Alliance, Inc.. - 1708-3087. ; 27:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaborative governance regimes may be vulnerable because of dependency on stakeholders??? voluntary engagement and efforts. This study focuses on the Swedish moose management system, a multi-level collaborative governance regime inspired by the ecosystem approach. Self-determination theory is used to explore perceived prerequisites of basic needs for intrinsic motivation across sub-groups of stakeholder representatives who are engaged across different social-ecological contexts. Questionnaire data collected among representatives at two governance levels, moose management groups (n = 624) and moose management units (n = 979), were subjected to two-step cluster analysis. The analyses revealed two sub-groups of representatives, characterized by differences in species composition and land ownership structure: managers of multi-ungulate areas and managers of large-carnivore areas. In several respects, these groups significantly differed in how they perceived the prerequisites. This included prerequisites of perceived competence with regard to their need for knowledge of topics and usefulness of monitoring methods, perceived autonomy operationalized as possibilities to perform their tasks with sufficient time, resources, and support from their organizations, and perceived relatedness to different groups of actors. Further efforts should be made to understand the conditions required for representatives to energize and direct their behavior. The institutional system must better fit the needs of stakeholder representatives across various local contexts, otherwise the space for local voluntary engagement might be hampered.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 17:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Waste picker organisations (WPOs) around the globe collect, transport and process waste to earn their living but represent a widely excluded, marginalised and impoverished segment of society. WPOs are highly innovative, created by grassroots out of “nothing” to deliver economic, social and environmental sustainability. Still, we do not know how such innovations are developed, and how they are disseminated and adopted by other groups. This article examines characteristics, challenges and innovations of WPOs across five countries in Latin America and East Africa. It is based on quantitative and qualitative data regarding modes of organisation and management, gender, received support, business orientations, environmental and social contributions, and innovations developed in response to multiple challenges. The paper provides a comprehensive understanding of WPOs’ activities and their grassroots innovations in the Global South. The study shows how WPOs contribute significantly to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the societies they serve as well as the wider urban societies. To start and maintain WPOs in informal settlements with a lack of infrastructure, institutional frameworks, and public and private investors is a difficult quest. WPOs take many different organisational forms depending on the complexity of local realities, ranging from advanced collective organization as cooperatives to small self-help groups and microentrepreneurs. Self-organisation into regional and national networks provides economic opportunities, autonomy and stability as well as political influence. Yet, institutional support is fundamental and the lack thereof threatens their existence. Sustaining WPOs as important providers of socio-environmental benefits through governmental and non-governmental actions is a worthwhile undertaking that builds sustainability.

  • Ingår i: The Review of Faith and International Affairs. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1557-0274 .- 1931-7743. ; 20:1, s. 11-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores to what extent the ideals of covenantal pluralism resonate with or deviate from socio-cultural processes in Cambodia. It examines efforts made by various Khmer Buddhist protagonists to recover moral order following the Khmer Rouge era. Conversely, it describes how power continues to be monopolized by certain actors in a way that undermines trust in institutions and in other people generally. Thus it explores the tension between a religious system that might offer protection for all and a predatory political reality marked by unrestrained greed that benefits the powerful at the expense of the vulnerable.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the outreach activities of the ongoing trials in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). The ECCC was designed to hold the leaders of Cambodia's notoriously violent Khmer Rouge regime (1975–1979) accountable. Outreach programmes have now become part of transitional justice initiatives as means to anchor their work in local and national consciousness in target countries. Using ethnographic data gathered in 2019–2020, this article explores how outreach activities have changed over time as they have become subject to new influences. I focus in particular on how some local actors have begun appropriating them in ways that represent a ‘counter-translation’ of the intentions originally propagated by the architects of the ECCC.

  • Contextualizing negative attitudes to wildlife and wildlife governance in the moral economy of Swedish farmers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Conservation Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2673-611X. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conflicts over managing large carnivores have been prominent in Sweden in recent decades. The most significant controversies are related to wolves, but the bear, lynx, and wolverine are also included. While the state and environmental organizations make efforts to guarantee a viable population of the large protected carnivores, farmers generally have a negative attitude towards large carnivores and a low level of trust in wildlife governance. Based on 22 in-depth interviews, 37 telephone questionnaires with Swedish farmers, and an analysis of 111 applications for protective hunting, this paper aims to demonstrate how these farmers’ perspectives on large carnivores can be explained by moral (sense of right and wrong) and moral economy (a system of obligations related to values and relations intervening with political views and financial decisions). The paper argues that farming, in addition to being an economic activity, is integrated with values, heritage, and relations to other human beings and animals. Farmers understand these values to be threatened by large carnivores, especially by wolves. The paper contextualizes negative sentiments, conflicts, protests, and also illegal hunting of large carnivores in relation to a sense of morals, sense of fairness, meanings, traditions, and mechanisms of daily life. We argue that this perspective provides a lens through which to interpret the conflict between farmers on the one side and the state and animal rights activists on the other. Such interpretation has consequences for understanding the legitimacy of government, shifting the focus from the processes of political governance (predominant in liberal political philosophy) to legitimacy tied to collective notions of social goods.

  • Prolonged or preserved working life? Intra-organisational institutions embedded in human resource routines
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ageing and Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 42:8, s. 1781-1799
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of why people are still retiring earlier than would have been expected, despite policies that increase the retirement age. This is a qualitative study in a large public-service organisation in Sweden focusing particularly on how human resource routines aimed at middle management tend to inhibit the promotion of a prolonged working life, despite government efforts aimed at changing these actions. The results highlight three key routines (development talks, salary talks and internal recruitment) that inhibit prolonged working life. These routines seem rational and appropriate to the organisation's managers, because the demands of the job must have priority over employees’ capabilities in recruitment routines. Furthermore, it could be considered economically rational to prioritise salary demands of younger employees over those of older employees, and it may appear economically rational to stop further training efforts for older employees. In general, then, it seems reasonable to managers to make decisions based on objective criteria like age. Nevertheless, our results suggest that these routines may need to be redesigned in order to support a prolonged working life and to avoid a discrepancy between accepted prolonged working-life policies and the actions of organisational actors. The study further reveals how intra-organisational institutions (e.g. taken-for-granted mind-sets and norms) embedded in human resource routines may promote or inhibit prolonged working life, suggesting a need for change in those institutions.

  • Innovation systems for technology diffusion: An analytical framework and two case studies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Technological Forecasting and Social Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-1625. ; 182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing theories on the diffusion of innovations fail to sufficiently account for contextual factors such as in-stitutions, infrastructure, and supply-side dynamics. This paper presents a novel framework to analyse tech-nology diffusion from a sociotechnical systems perspective, intended as an analytical tool to identify and assess drivers and barriers to diffusion that could be addressed through policy or business strategy. This framework, referred to as the diffusion innovation system (DIS) approach, is positioned within the innovation systems liter-ature. The framework is applied to two empirical cases of renewable energy technology diffusion in Sweden: solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind power. The cases illustrate how key factors related to institutions, infra-structure, adopters, and supply co-develop over time as the technologies diffuse, hence demonstrating the merits of the framework. As these changes are both a reaction to and a cause of diffusion, the sociotechnical diffusion system develops through positive feedback loops. Although the systems' development is largely conducive of diffusion, some remaining and potential barriers are identified.

  • Exploring Students’ Choice of Theories as Tools in Problem-Solving: A Pilot Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. - 1812-9129. ; 33:2, s. 225-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to explore why work-experienced students with up to 20 years of experience may not change their perception of professional practice when subsequently participating in practice-based learning programmes in higher education. We investigated the role of the degree of codification as operationalisation in how students choose theories to solve a practical management problem. When selecting a theory, work-experienced students may overlook the degree of codification in the theory that enables its use as an analytical tool. Previous research on novices or work-experienced students has not investigated their learning outcomes considering the features of theories students need to apply. Research findings indicate that students’ understanding of theories affects their selection of theories and their problem-solving practice. This study extends previous research on work-experienced students’ learning and contributes to the international discussion on why work-experienced students encounter difficulties in professional and practice-based learning in higher education.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyses how the mutual imbrication of organizational and postcolonial power along with the micro-embedding of actors' shape and structure power struggles in multinational corporations. Drawing on the case of news agency Reuters' internationalization and centralization approach at its Indian subsidiaries in Mumbai and Bangalore, our research explores how subsidiaries mobilize resources to pursue their interests in a landscape shaped by clashing professional institutional logics and organizational control systems reflected in quality control and performance assessment. Our findings shows that the power struggle and (professional) identity position of both subsidiary staff differs as they face different organizational, institutional and (neo)colonial pressures and are othered in different ways. We argue that as a site of "value production," both subsidiaries are qualified and disadvantaged in distinct ways. Our study emphasizes the importance of understanding diverse colonial experiences and the mainstreaming of postcolonial insights in the analysis of power in MNCs.

  • Offshore outsourcing of R&D to emerging markets: information systems as tools of neo-colonial control
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Critical Perspectives on International Business. - : Emerald. - 1742-2043. ; 18:3, s. 281-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose This paper analyzes how information systems (IS) can serve as tools of neo-colonial control in offshore outsourcing of research and development work. It draws on critical work examining business and knowledge process outsourcing. Design/methodology/approach The paper reports an empirical study of how laboratory information management systems (LIMS) shape offshore outsourcing practices involving Western client firms and Indian contract research organizations (CROs) in the pharmaceutical industry. The study adopted a multi-actor perspective, involving interviews with representatives of Western clients, Indian CROs, system validation auditors, and software vendors. The analysis was iterative and interpretative, guided by postcolonial sensitivity to themes of power and control. Findings The study found that LIMS act as tools of neo-colonial control at three levels. As Western clients specify particular brands of LIMS, they create a hierarchy among local CROs and impact the development of the local LIMS industry. At inter-organizational level, LIMS shape relationships by allowing remote, real-time and retrospective surveillance of CROs' work. At individual level, the ability of LIMS to support micro-modularizing of research leads to routinization of scientific discovery, negatively impacting scientists' work satisfaction. Originality/value By examining multiple actors' perceptions of IS, this paper looks beyond the rhetoric of system efficiency characteristic of most international business research. As it explores dynamics of power and control surrounding IS, it also questions the proposition that outsourcing of high-end work will move emerging economies upstream in the value chain.

  • Twenty-five years of cyber threats in the news: a study of Swedish newspaper coverage (1995–2019)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cybersecurity. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2057-2085 .- 2057-2093. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how cyber threats are represented in Swedish newspapers. The sample comprises 1269 articles from three newspapers (Aftonbladet, Göteborgs-Posten, and Svenska Dagbladet) covering 25 years (1995–2019). The study provides a text-near and detailed analysis of the threats covered. The study analyzes these threats along several dimensions: their modality (e.g. unauthorized access or manipulation); to what extent ambiguous themes (e.g. attack, crime, and warfare) are specified in context; how cyber-threat coverage has changed over time; and the event orientation of the coverage, i.e. whether articles address topical events and, if so, which ones. There are five main findings. First, the Swedish newspaper cybersecurity discourse covers multiple threats; in total, 34 themes (present in at least 4% of articles) have been identified. Second, the representation of cyber threats varies in specificity. While generic themes such as attack and warfare are mostly specified in terms of their modality, they sometimes are not, leaving the representation vague. Third, this study, given its general approach, provides insights into media representations of particular cyber threats. For example, this study finds the meaning of “hacking” in the media to be more diversified and nuanced than previously assumed (e.g. as simply meaning “computer break-in”). Fourth, newspaper coverage of cyber threats has changed over time, in both quantity (i.e. the amount of coverage has increased) and quality, as three general trends have been observed: the state-ification and militarization of threats (i.e. increased attention to, e.g. nations and warfare as threats), the organization-ification of threats (i.e. increased attention to, e.g. government agencies and companies as threats), and the diversification and hyping of threats (i.e. cumulatively more threats are added to the cybersecurity discourse, although attention to particular threats is sometimes restricted in time). Finally, parallel to coverage of particular topical events (e.g. the “I love you” virus), newspaper representations of cyber threats largely exemplify “amplification without the event,” i.e. threats are covered without linking them to topical events, as is otherwise typical of news reports. The findings in relation to previous studies of cybersecurity discourse and the implications for informal learning and threat perception are discussed.

  • Processus de gestion des conflits aux antécédents sorcellaires au niveau juridique et communautaire à Korhogo en Côte d’Ivoire
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Revue Africaine d’Anthropologie, Nyansa-Pô. - 1819-0642. ; :33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 37:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper is a reply to Brunsson (2021b), who wrote a commentary on the edited volume Theories and Perspectives in Business Administration (Eriksson-Zetterquist, Hansson & Nilsson, 2020). Although we agree with Brunsson on several points, we nevertheless argue that students need to learn about different theories and perspectives. First, the use of theories and perspectives as analytical tools will help students to describe and analyze a certain phenomenon. Second, to be able to theorize students need to acquire fundamental knowledge of the background and the specificities of the theory or perspective in use. Third, an awareness of the diversity of theories and perspectives that exists within the business administration discipline is a prerequisite to being able to contribute to the creation of new knowledge. Finally, we do not agree with Brunsson that the multitude of theories and perspectives in the business administration discipline is a sign of "an inferiority complex". It is the outcome of the vitality and viability of the discipline.

    • Local governments are bringing previously outsourced services back in‐house. Research into explanations for sourcing decisions in the public sector is growing, however, few researchers have investigated drivers of both outsourcing and backsourcing in local public‐governance organizations. In this study we utilize transaction cost economic theory (TCE) and political ideology to investigate underlying motives of sourcing in local public governance organizations. Based on a 2018 survey of chief financial officers (CEO) in all of Sweden's 290 municipalities, this study shows that backsourcing is strongly associated with outsourcing and that outsourcing and backsourcing should not be understood as opposite phenomena, rather as interdependent phenomena in a dynamic sourcing strategy. Outsourcing and backsourcing are driven in part by different factors: Outsourcing by political ambitions and economic factors relating to TCE, while managerial and pragmatic concerns are foregrounded for backsourcing.

    • This study investigates how new categories of experts can contribute to strategy development in public organizations. Interplay between managers and experts was analysed using principal-agent theory, stewardship theory, and partnership theory, each assigning the experts different kinds of strategic contribution. Results show that experts may contribute to an iterative and emergent strategy process as stewards through a consultative process method that lets the means guide the goals. Experts' knowledge of what other actors in the organization perceive as important guides the experts' application of the technical methods and processing.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Organization and Management. - 1477-7266. ; 35:9, s. 245-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate and theoretically explain how line managers and lowerstatus experts work together in public health-care organizations. Hence, this study explores how lower-status experts influence line managers’ decision-making and task prioritizing in order to guide staff experts’ cooperation and performance improvements. Design/methodology/approach – The authors used a qualitative method for data collection and analysis of the experts’ and line managers’ explanations about their cooperation. A theoretical approach of experts’ identity positioning, in terms of differences and similarities, was used in analyzing the interaction between managers and experts. Findings – This study shows that similarities and differences in positioning acts exist simultaneously. Similarity is constructed by way of strategic and professional alignment with the line managers’ core tasks. Differences stem from the distinction between knowledge-grounded skills and professional attributes such as language, analytical tools, and jargon. Lower-status experts need to leave their entrenched positions and match the professional status of line managers in both knowledge aspirations and appearance to reach a respected approach of experts’ identity positioning. Originality/value – Unlike many previous studies, this study demonstrates that similarities and differences in positioning acts exist simultaneously.

  • Ingår i: Culture and Organization. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1475-9551 .- 1477-2760. ; 27:6, s. 456-475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate why and how informal information such as rumours gains relevance for managers in relation to their workplace situations. The results demonstrated rumours not only played a role as a supplement to formal information in this study; the relationship between rumours and formal information was shown to be a relatively dynamic, complex interaction in which the various sources of information were feeding each other. Without using this informal information, it was difficult for the managers in this study to gain insight into how they should act, and to act timely. Confidence in their leadership can be harmed if managers do not listen to informal information, and that negative effects on leadership can occur when rumours switch to gossip. We concluded, from a process view on rumours, that the ability of managers to include informal information in their daily work can create trust.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. ; 13:23, s. 1-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Participation and citizen engagement are fundamental elements in urban regeneration and in the deployment of nature-based solutions (NBS) to advance sustainable urban development. Various limitations inherent to participatory processes concerning NBS for inclusive urban regeneration have been addressed, and lessons have been learnt. This paper investigates participation and urban regeneration and focuses on the development of guidelines for citizen engagement and the co-creation of NBS in the H2020 URBiNAT project. The methodology first involves the collection of scientific and practical input on citizen engagement from a variety of stakeholders, such as researchers and practitioners, to constitute a corpus of qualitative data. This input is then systematized into guideline categories and serves as the basis for a deeper analysis with researchers, experts, and practitioners, both inside and outside URBiNAT, and in dialogue with other cases of participatory NBS implementation. The results highlight an ‘ecology of knowledges’ based on a ‘living’ framework, which aims to address the specific needs of various segments of citizens and to match citizen engagement to the participatory cultures of cities. Implications and further research are also discussed, with a special focus on the implementation of NBS. The conclusions broaden the research context to include the refinement of the NBS approach, with participation being seen as both a means and an end.

  • Ingår i: Revue Africaine des Sciences Sociales et de la Sante Publique. - 1987-071X .- 1987-1023. ; 3:2, s. 117-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 29:4, s. 275-289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past decade, gender equality has increasingly been motivated by economic gain, and has been described as a key to economic growth and “good for business”. This article draws on an ethnographic study of professional gender equality consultants in order to explore the effects of market feminism. The participants use entrepreneurship as a form of activism and try to make a difference regarding issues of gender by selling equality as a commercial service. By understanding markets as “performative”, the article characterizes the relationship between markets and feminism as one that is multi-facetted and plural, in order to explore the possibility to “take back the economy”. Many of the consultants who were interviewed for this study talked about making money on feminism as empowering and subversive, and as something that actually added value to gender issues. They claim that this is done by questioning what is valued in a society, and who should be paid and for what. The purpose of this article is to examine these gender consultants’ “ways of performing” the relationships that exist between markets, money, and feminism, and the feminist agencies that these performances afford them. In performing market feminism, these consultants create a disruption in established narratives within the economy, private enterprise, and economic growth. The article thus points to the importance of challenging these narratives in order to build more feminist economies.
