  • The Electronically Excited-States of 2-Phenylindole
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Chemical Physics. - 0301-0104. ; 151:1, s. 149-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The light absorption of 2-phenylindole (2PI) in the UV region (210-350 nm) is investigated by means of linear dichroism in stretched polyethylene film and fluorescence polarization anisotropy in a propylene glycol glass. Experimentally, 2PI is found to have five distinct electronic transitions located above 200 nm for which the transition moments are determined. The conclusions are supported by quantum chemical calculations and the origin of the so-called composite band is discussed. Comparison with the absorption spectrum of the fluorescent DNA binding probe DAPI is also made and 2PI is found to be an appropriate model system for the electronic transitions of DAPI.

  • Landau cavities at MAX II
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 416:2-3, s. 465-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Passive Landau cavities have been built, installed and taken into regular operation in the MAX II ring. The purpose of the Landau damping system is twofold: to decrease the energy spread of the beam induced by coupled bunch oscillations and to increase the Touschek life-time. The cavities are of the pillbox type operated at 1500 MHz, the third harmonic of the main RF. This paper describes the design, tuning and operational results of the cavities.

  • Some experiments on synchrotron radiation induced desorption at MAX
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Vacuum. - 0042-207X. ; 46:8-10, s. 757-761
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the synchrotron radiation facility MAX, the rest gas pressure in the storage rings is dominated by synchrotron radiation induced gas desorption. This desorption decreases with accumulated photon dose. The rate of decrease, or conditioning, is of greatest importance, since an acceptable machine performance, after opening the vacuum system, is highly dependent on the vacuum recovery. In MAX II the synchrotron radiation will hit specially designed absorbers. In order to finalize the design of these absorbers, a series of measurements were performed at the MAX I ring. Here we present the experimental results, which suggest that the area exposed to the emitted photoelectrons should be minimized, in order to obtain a higher rate of conditioning.

    • A 1.5 GeV third generation storage ring optimised for the VUV and soft X-ray spectral region is currently being built at MAX-lab. The magnet lattice, ring architecture and production choices are optimised to fit within rather tight boundary conditions without sacrificing performance. In this paper, the magnet lattice, light characteristics, injection and technical solutions for the ring are presented.

  • The new 1.5 GeV storage ring for synchrotron radiation : MAX II
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 66:2, s. 1850-1853
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MAX laboratory at Lund University, Sweden, today operates an accelerator system consisting of a 100 MeV racetrack microtron and a 550 MeV storage ring (MAX I). At the moment (July 1994) a new storage ring MAX II is near completion and will start first injections within 2 months. This work gives an overview of the MAX II project including the first beamlines and a description of the accelerator system. MAX II is a 1.5 GeV third generation light source optimized for the VUV and soft-x-ray region. It consists of a ten cell double bend achromat lattice forming the 90 m circumference ring. Injection is done at 500 MeV from the existing storage ring MAX I, and ramping up to full energy will take place in MAX II. The straight sections have a length of 3.2 m and eight sections are free to house insertion devices. At start up the ring will be equipped with one 7.5 T superconducting wiggler and one 1.8 T multipole wiggler. Two more undulators are ordered and under construction. To be able to achieve the project a few shortcuts have been made in the design of the storage ring: (1) Nonzero dispersion is allowed in the straight sections, (2) chromaticity correction is built into the quadrupole magnets, and (3) the length of the straight sections is limited to 3.2 m. The project is progressing on time. Extraction of an electron beam from the MAX I storage ring has been achieved and has successfully been transported into the MAX II building. The MAX II ring is under assembly with most of the sections already mounted. First injection is planned to take place in August 1994.

  • DeeDS : Towards a Distributed and Active Real-Time Database Systems
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: ACM Sigmod Record. ; 25:1, s. 38-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DeeDS combines active database functionality with critical timing constraints and integrated system monitoring. Since the reactive database mechanisms, or rule management system, must meet critical deadlines, we must employ methods that make triggering of rules and execution of actions predictable. We will focus on the scheduling issues associated with dynamic scheduling of workloads where the triggered transactions have hard, firm or soft deadlines, and how transient overloads may be resolved by substituting transactions by computationally cheaper ones. The rationale for a loosely coupled general purpose event monitoring facility, that works in tight connection with the scheduler, is presented. For performance and predictability, the scheduler and event monitor are executing on a separate CPU from the rest of the system. Real-time database accesses in DeeDS are made predictable and efficient by employing methods such as main memory resident data, full replication, eventual consistency, and prevention of global deadlocks.

  • Attitudes towards self-determination in health care : A general population survey in northern Sweden
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Public Health. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1101-1262 .- 1464-360X. ; 9:1, s. 41-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Today, patient self-determination has become an issue in many western countries due to the widespread availability and use of technology, which makes it possible to prolong life often in spite of severe disability and poor quality of life. Many people fear an overzealous use of modern life-saying procedures which merely serve to prolong the dying process. As a first step towards autonomy and increasing self-determination, advance directives (living wills) have been introduced in some countries. Methods: To survey a general population's attitudes towards advance directives and self-determination a questionnaire was mailed to a representative sample of 600 citizens in northern Sweden. Issues regarding importance of control, concerns about own health care, treatment preferences and support for and use of advance directives were addressed. Results: There was a response rate of 80% and the great majority of respondents reported that it was extremely or very important to have a say in decisions about their health care (79.5%). A significant number of subjects were concerned about either being treated too aggressively or not aggressively enough. There was a variability in treatment preferences, depending on the reversibility of the condition. Conclusions: The results demonstrate a vital interest among the Swedish general public for greater self-determination in health care, which is also reflected by their support of advance directives.

  • Occupational exposures and risk of gastric cancer in a population-based case-control study
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Cancer Research. - 0008-5472. ; 59:23, s. 5932-5937
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gastric cancer trends seem to follow improvements in the environment of blue-collar workers, but the etiological role of occupational exposures in gastric carcinogenesis is scantily investigated. The risk of gastric adenocarcinoma in 10 common occupational industries, and particularly the long-term effects of asbestos, organic solvents, impregnating agents, insecticides, and herbicides, were evaluated in a population-based case- control study, including data on most established risk factors. The study base included all individuals of ages 40-79, born in Sweden and living in either of two areas (total population, 1.3 million) with differing gastric cancer incidences, from February 1989 through January 1995. We interviewed 567 cases classified to site (cardia/noncardia) and histological type, and 11(15 population-based controls, frequency-matched for age and sex. Metal workers had a 46% excess gastric cancer risk [adjusted odds ratio (OR), 1.46; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-1.94], increasing to 1.65 (95% CI, 1.17- 2.32) for >10 years in the industry. The elevated risk after exposure to herbicides (OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.13-2.15) was attributable to phenoxyacetic acids (adjusted OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.16-2.48), similarly across tumor subtypes, and not modified by smoking, body mass index, or Helicobacter pylori. The absence of interaction was demonstrated by the pure multiplicative effect found among those exposed to both H. pylori and phenoxyacetic acids (OR, 3.42; 95% CI, 1.41-8.26). Organic solvents, insecticides, impregnating agents, and asbestos were not associated with gastric cancer risk. Employment in the metal industry and exposure to phenoxyacetic acids were both positively and independently associated with gastric cancer risk. The fractions of all gastric cancers attributable to these job-related exposures were small but not negligible (7 and 5%, respectively) in the Swedish population.
