  • Developing the concept of family involvement and the alienation questionnaire in the context of psychiatric care
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mental Health Nursing. - London : Wiley- Blackwell. - 1445-8330 .- 1447-0349. ; 17:6, s. 439-449
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research shows that family members of persons with a mental illness often experience a lack of involvement in the psychiatric care of their relative. An interpretation of the findings of these studies raises the question whether the family members’ experience of not being involved can be conceptualised in terms of alienation towards mental health services from their encounter with psychiatric care.  In order to explore this possibility, the Family Involvement and Alienation Questionnaire (FIAQ) was constructed, guided by relevant theoretical frameworks and empirical research. The content validity of the questionnaire was evaluated by two groups of experienced researchers who had sound knowledge of the theoretical frameworks used. Validity based on the response process was evaluated by parents of persons with mental illness. The reliability of the questionnaire was evaluated by a test-retest design, in a group of 15 family members. The data were analysed by a non-parametric statistical method.   The results of the validity and reliability evaluations show that of the 46 original items 28 items in the questionnaire would be useful in exploring the concept of family involvement and alienation in the context of psychiatric care. Further, minor modification may make the FIAQ useful in exploring these concepts in other settings.

  • Coordination in International Manufacturing: The Role of Competitive Priorities and the Focus of Globally Dispersed Facilities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 10:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this era of globalization, network integration has received great attention, as it certainly has implications for the competitiveness in international manufacturing. A key issue in integration is to coordinate activities of dispersed facilities in a way to align the target of locating abroad and the priorities to be competitive. This study explores and clarifies the effect of competitive priority and focus of dispersed facilities on coordinating the activities in intra-firm network manufacturing. Based on a multiple case study involving four different companies manufacturing in globally dispersed facilities, the results confirm that both competitive priorities and specific focus of global manufacturing are important for selecting mechanisms to coordinate overseas facilities, with the competitive priorities ‘quality’ and ‘flexibility’ being the more important. Furthermore, the findings reveal that companies place emphasis on informal mechanisms to coordinate the low-cost focused facilities. In turn, the importance of formal mechanisms seems equal for coordinating both low-cost focused facilities and those focused on capturing a local market. Finally, the findings of this paper suggest that elements of competitive priority, as well as the focus of dispersed facilities, should be considered towards making the choice for mechanisms of coordination. The findings bear important implications for the effective coordination of activities in international manufacturing.

  • Internal and external suppliers in manufacturing networks : An empirical analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743. ; 1:2, s. 141-149
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of the paper is to explore the way manufacturing firms use internal and external suppliers in the design and management of manufacturing networks. The main area of interest is to explore the similarities and differences between internal and external suppliers, with respect to their roles and the reasons for choosing a certaintype of supplier. We base our analysis on data from 104 Swedish manufacturing plants and their corresponding manufacturing networks of internal and external suppliers. The results of the study show that there are significant differences between the criteria that are influential in choosing a certain type of supplier. The choice of an internal supplier is largely based on a single corporate decision, while an external supplier has to perform well on a number of criteria (primarily quality, cost, and delivery dependability). When comparing the selection criteria withcompetitive priorities and plant performance, we find that the criteria for selecting external suppliers has a better match than those for selecting internal suppliers. The sample contained plants having only external suppliers as well as plants having both internal and external suppliers, but the selection criteria for external suppliers are the same for both groups and not dependent upon the presence or absence of internal suppliers.

  • Paper structure modeling with particle-level process simulation
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Progress in Paper Physics Seminar.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Print quality is highly dependent on the interactions of paper, ink and printing plate at the length scales of half-tone dot size and floc size. Knowledge of the details of the micro-structure is needed to predict these interactions, but it is difficult to obtain experimentally. One way to recreate the micro-structures of paper and to gain understanding of the mechanisms behind their formation is to systematically model each unit process of papermaking at particle level. The output of such simulations is numerical descriptions of the three-dimensional paper structure, from which any structural data can be accessed. Consequently, the simulations relate process parameters and particle properties directly to the micro-structures of paper. Many characteristics of the fiber network structure and the distribution of fillers and fines are determined in the headbox and during drainage in the forming section. A model for fiber suspensions, which couples the Navier-Stokes equations to a mechanical model of discretely represented flexible fibers, has been developed. Its performance allows for the study of large particle systems at very high Reynolds numbers (20000 particles at Re=40000), which is enough to model the conditions prevalent in the forming section of a modern paper machine.

  • Finite-strain, finite-size mechanics of rigidly cross-linked biopolymer networks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Soft Matter. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1744-683X .- 1744-6848. ; 9:30, s. 7302-7313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The network geometries of rigidly cross-linked fibrin and collagen type I networks are imaged using confocal microscopy and characterized statistically. This statistical representation allows for the regeneration of large, three-dimensional biopolymer networks using an inverse method. Finite element analyses with beam networks are then used to investigate the large deformation, nonlinear elastic response of these artificial networks in isotropic stretching and simple shear. For simple shear, we investigate the differential bulk modulus, which displays three regimes: a linear elastic regime dominated by filament bending, a regime of strain-stiffening associated with a transition from filament bending to stretching, and a regime of weaker strain-stiffening at large deformations, governed by filament stretching convolved with the geometrical nonlinearity of the simple shear strain tensor. The differential bulk modulus exhibits a corresponding strain-stiffening, but reaches a distinct plateau at about 5% strain under isotropic stretch conditions. The small-strain moduli, the bulk modulus in particular, show a significant size-dependence up to a network size of about 100 mesh sizes. The large-strain differential shear modulus and bulk modulus show very little size-dependence.

  • Analysis of Stochastic Gradient Algorithms for Linear Regression Problems
  • 1984
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. - : IEEE Information Theory Society. - 0018-9448 .- 1557-9654. ; 30:2, s. 151-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parameter estimation problems that can be formulated as linear regressions are quite common in many applications. Recursive (on-line, sequential) estimation of such parameters can be performed using the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm or a stochastic gradient version of this algorithm. In this paper the convergence properties of the gradient algorithm are analyzed under the assumption that the gain tends to zero. The technique is the same as the so-called ordinary differential equation approach, but the treatment here is self-contained and includes a proof of the boundedness of the estimates. A main result is that the convergence conditions for the gradient algorithm are the same as those for the recursive least squares algorithm.
