  • Applied business intelligence in the making : An inter-university case from swedish higher education
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Business Information Systems Workshops. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642034237 ; , s. 226-230
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has long been a debate regarding the inclusion of IT into the curriculum for business students. With IT being a natural part of their coming working environment, the under-developed use of for instance Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions has suffered much critique. As a response to this, the Centre for Business Solutions and the Scandinavian Academic Network for Teaching Enterprise Systems (SANTE) have created a joint initiative together with the industry. Through making the full accounts from a medium-sized manufacturing company available to the students through a specially designed BI solution, the students are given the task to identify potential problems with the accounts. The assignment is intended to be run in the form of a competition, where the students from different Swedish universities compete in analyzing the company in a given time-frame. The purpose of this case is to present the outline and outset for the competition, together with some initial reflections on the setup-phase.

  • IT Governance in the light of Paradox - A Social System Theory Perspective
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: The 40th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper uses Niclas Luhmann's concepts of paradox and deparadoxization as a starting point for looking at IT governance within large, Swedish organizations. All in all a total of 25 organizations within both the public and private sector have been investigated through interviews with the companies Chief Information Officers. The results are presented in relation to a number of areas within the study that could be identified as dichotomies, or areas where the respondents had to deal with conflicting logics. The results are discussed in general terms in relation to IT governance practice as well as the potential value of applying Luhmann's theory of social systems to the study of IT governance

  • Towards the third-wave of higher enterprise system education: Three Scandinavian cases
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. ; 31
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With enterprise systems being a natural part of any business environment, they are becoming an integrated part of educational environments. With the systems having the potential to illustrate, visualize and simulate business and decision-making processes to students of both business and IT, they hold vast potential for playing a crucial role in future pedagogic innovation within higher education. Through accounts of previous experiences of enterprise system inclusion, the majority of examples have been single installations of large and highly complex enterprise systems. This has led to a high degree of failure and difficulties for academia to realize many of the potential benefits. This article reports from three cases from Scandinavian higher education, where a wide selection of different mid-market enterprise systems have been applied in the educational environment. These three cases are seen as examples of a third wave of enterprise system inclusion within higher education, relating the findings to what Hawking et al (2004) described as the second wave. This third wave is signified by a strong focus on introducing the systems as vehicles of pedagogic innovation rather than as a means in themselves, and through a focus on less complex systems from a multitude of different vendors.

  • DELTA, an architecture for management of enterprise development
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Information Systems, ECIS 2006 2006, 12p.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Management of enterprise development refers to the complex task of transforming an enterprise fromone state to another (desirable) state in a controlled manner. This paper presents a framework thatenables the systematization of empirical as well as theoretical knowledge contributions relevant formanagement of enterprise development. The framework is validated theoretically as well asempirically. The framework has proved effective to systemize and relate this variety of issues andprovide a tool for comprehensibility for practitioners trying to grasp the development situation inwhich they engage. The framework is a valid foundation for elaborating a knowledgebase supportingthe management of enterprise and IS development in complex organisations.

  • Infusing an architectural framework with neo-institutional theory : Reports from recent change management initiatives within the Swedish public administration
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences Volume 4. - 0769525075 ; , s. 67b-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish public administration is currentlyundergoing radical change towards dynamic modelsof governance relying on a high level of intergovernmentalcollaboration. This high level ofinteroperability between governmental organizationsand the subsequent quality of service for citizens andcompanies depending on the services provided bygovernment is summarized in the vision-statement ofthe 24-hour government (24-timmarsmyndigheten).According to the primary actor‘s (Statskontoret)recommendation, this vision is to be realized throughthe application of web-service based technology, resulting in a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).The purpose of this paper is to investigate a possibleinfusion of a previously developed architecturalframework for change management with neoinstitutionaltheory. The results show that neoinstitutionaltheory could be used to infuse thearchitectural framework with aspects regardingprimarily history and legitimacy, but also with anoverall contradictory perception of change. Given thevast differences in fundamental assumptionsunderlying the architectural framework and neoinstitutionaltheory, the paper concludes that theseresults are however somewhat problematic.
