  • A three class treatment of the FHR classification problem using latent class analysis labeling
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 36th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBC 2014. - Piscataway, NJ : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781424479290 ; , s. 46-49
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring in the form of cardiotocography is routinely used for fetal assessment both during pregnancy and delivery. However its interpretation requires a high level of expertise and even then the assessment is somewhat subjective as it has been proven by the high inter and intra-observer variability. Therefore the scientific community seeks for more objective methods for its interpretation. Along this path, presented work proposes a classification approach, which is based on a latent class analysis method that attempts to produce more objective labeling of the training cases, a step which is vital in a classification problem. The method is combined with a simple logistic regression approach under two different schemes: a standard multi-class classification formulation and an ordinal classification one. The results are promising suggesting that more effort should be put in this proposed approach

  • Segmental resection or subtotal colectomy in Crohn's colitis?
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Diseases of the Colon & Rectum. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0012-3706 .- 1530-0358. ; 45:1, s. 47-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Segmental resection for Crohn's colitis is controversial. Compared with subtotal colectomy, segmental resection is reported to be associated with a higher rate of re-resection. Few studies address this issue, and postoperative functional outcome has not been reported previously. This study compared segmental resection to subtotal colectomy with anastomosis with regard to re-resection, postoperative symptoms, and anorectal function.METHODS: Fifty-seven patients operated on between 1970 and 1997 with segmental resection (n = 31) or subtotal colectomy (n = 26) were included. Reoperative procedures were analyzed by a life-table technique. Segmentally resected patients were also compared separately with a subgroup of subtotally colectomized patients (n = 12) with similarly limited colonic involvement. Symptoms were assessed according to Best's modified Crohn's Disease Activity Index and an anorectal function score.RESULTS: The re-resection rate did not differ between groups in either the entire study population (P = 0.46) or the subgroup of patients with comparable colonic involvement (P = 0.78). Segmentally resected patients had fewer symptoms (P = 0.039), fewer loose stools (P = 0.002), and better anorectal function (P = 0.027). Multivariate analysis revealed the number of colonic segments removed to be the strongest predictive factor for postoperative symptoms and anorectal function (P = 0.026 and P = 0.013, respectively).CONCLUSION: Segmental resection should be considered in limited Crohn's colitis.

  • Applying the European hydroacoustic standard on fish abundance estimation (EN 15910) : survey experiences from three European countries
  • 2016
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Hydroacoustics is an internationally approved method to study fish for abundance estimates and behaviour to increase our understanding of aquatic ecosystems. In Europe and North- America, the need to compare results between years, lakes and countries has been recognized and as a consequence of this, acoustic methods are being standardized. To study how the European standard Water quality – Guidance on the estimation of fish abundance with mobile hydroacoustic methods (CEN 2014) was perceived by different users, a joint evaluation of the implementation of the standard was performed in 2014 by hydroacoustic experts from three European countries. In some parts of the standard the participants´ actions were different from what was described by the standard, and in some cases methods differed among the participants. A general explanation for most of these cases was that stable equipment performance and experience from discrete surveys reduce the need of controlling actions. We suggest that the results of this study should be considered at the revision of the standard (EN 15910) scheduled for 2017.

  • Educating European Citizenship : Elucidating assumptions about teaching civic competence
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Policy Futures in Education. - : SAGE Publications. - 1478-2103. ; 13:6, s. 788-800
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, the idea of the contribution of education to citizenship has been reinitiated. The purpose of this paper is to investigate constructions of citizenship as they are articulated in European policy documents on teacher education. It is indicated that the normative form of active citizenship is put into play through the individual and her or his actions, which is centred on learning. Drawing on Foucault’s analytic approach to problematization and Foucauldian methods of analysing policy problematizations of a certain problem, this study draws attention to the discourse of active citizenship and technologies of accountability that are utilized to shape teaching civic learning. It is suggested that citizenship is constructed as a learning problem, which motivates young people in school to reflect on their skills and competences. It is also from these capacities that their attitudes towards cultural diversity are assumed to be developed. Thus, in the formation of citizenship, emphasis is laid on the individual’s capacity for learning, which is also mobilized in narratives of the construction of Europe.

  • Decreased importance of environmental risk factors for childhood asthma from 1996 to 2006.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Clinical and experimental allergy : journal of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : Wiley. - 1365-2222 .- 0954-7894. ; 45:1, s. 146-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The large increase in asthma prevalence continues in several, but not all areas. Despite the individual risk factors that have been identified, the reasons for the observed trends in prevalence are largely unknown.

  • Skolprestationer : Faktorer som är relaterade till studieresultat i grundskolans senare år
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This compilation dissertation explores school results (or alterably, educational or academic achievement) at the Swedish lower-secondary level (Grades 7–9), particularly Grade 9 and to lesser extent Grade 8, using both aggregated data at the school and municipality level from Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) and similar databases (Sweden Statistics, Kolada), and individual data from Education through follow-up (UGU, utvärdering genom uppföljning), and the Programme for international student assessment, PISA (2018). Data were obtained from the years 2013, 2018, and 2019. The outcome variables consisted either of the sum score grades at least E (where E is the lowest pass grade and A is the highest) in all subjects or grade point average (either in all 17 subjects or a sum of English, Mathematics and Swedish), national test results (English, Mathematics, Swedish, Swedish as a second language), or PISA scores in mathematics and reading. The theoretical framework hinged on a socio-ecological model which covers the micro- (individuals, families), meso- (schools), macro levels (social factors such as political systems and social changes) of school results in different contexts. This rather comprehensive approach to school results was in turn related to six main variables that aimed to explain the variation in academic achievement, mostly by using linear regression models: socioeconomic status (SES, such as average parental education or resources within municipalities, schools or families), migration background (i.e., differences between native-born students and first- and second-generation migrant students), cognitive ability (i.e., the scores obtained from cognitive ability tests), non-cognitive abilities (e.g., the degree to which students regard themselves as being able to handle their school situation), teacher competence or teaching quality (i.e., mostly formal teacher competence such as the degree to which municipalities have teachers with a formal degree in teaching), as well as the geographical position of municipalities and students. The findings, which are related to four different studies, indicate that when all six variables were included in the same regression models (only in the UGU study), cognitive ability was the strongest factor, followed by non-cognitive abilities, SES, teaching quality, migration background, and geographical position. In some regression models, migration background was not even statistically significant, which was also the case with geographical position. When exploring the aggregated Skolverket data, the SES variables were the strongest, followed by migration background, and teacher competence, while geographical position was only statistically significant when the municipalities whose school results were the highest were compared with their lowest counterparts. The study which was built on PISA data and used a multi-level model approach, found a much stronger effect for migration background at the within-school level, which may be because students with a migration background have difficulties in understanding the long and reading-intense PISA tasks. It might also be because PISA does not include cognitive ability indicators. Moreover, for reading achievement, some non-cognitive abilities were also important such as self-assessed reading capabilities. At the between-school level, differences were associated with reading motivation. These results reflect upon recent phenomena in the Swedish context such as individualisation (the emphasis on individual level factors), socioeconomic disparities, and migration (social change).
