  • Critical situations in daily life as experienced by patients with inflammatory bowel disease
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Gastroenterology Nursing. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 1042-895X. ; 39:3, s. 195-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are chronic and have a fluctuating clinical course that impacts daily life. Daily life with a chronic disease involves thinking and worrying about the limitations that chronic disease causes. Knowledge about how patients who suffer from IBD manage critical incidents in daily life is lacking. The aim of the study was to describe how patients living with IBD experience critical incidents in daily life in relation to their disease and symptoms. Thirty adult patients were interviewed focusing on critical incidents in daily life. Data were analyzed using the critical incident technique. The study comprised 224 critical incidents and was grouped into 21 subcategories and 5 categories: losing bowel control, having a body that smells, being unable to meet own and others' expectations, not being believed or seen, and experiencing frustration due to side effects and ineffective treatment. These categories formed one main area describing the overall result "The bowels rule life." The uncertain nature of IBD created critical incidents in which the bowel ruled life, causing patients to avoid social interaction. It also placed considerable demands on the family and sometimes had a negative effect on the afflicted person's career. This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives License 4.0 (CCBY-NC-ND), where it is permissible to download and share the work provided it is properly cited. • Diabetesnefropati
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Nordisk medicin. - 0029-1420. ; 107:8-9, s. 215-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diabetic nephropathy is a common complication in diabetes mellitus. In addition to the risk of renal failure, patients with established nephropathy are at increased risk of proliferative retinopathy and cardiovascular disease. As the earliest prodrome of nephropathy is microalbuminuria, albumin excretion needs to be monitored with a reliable method in all diabetics. In the event of microalbuminuria, diabetes treatment needs to be intensified to optimise metabolic regulation. Early institution of antihypertensive treatment is essential to avoid progression to clinical nephropathy.

  • Microbial community-based measurements to estimate heavy metal effects in soil : The use of phospholipid fatty acid patterns and bacterial community tolerance
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - 0044-7447. ; 27:1, s. 58-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microbial community-based measurements to detect effects of heavy metals in soils rely on the premise that metal toxicity exerts a selection pressure, which induces a change in the composition of the community. The phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition gives an integrated picture of all living organisms in the soil, and changes in the PLFA pattern of the soil indicate an altered species composition due to, e.g. metal toxicity. An increased bacterial community tolerance to metals also indicates an altered community composition, with tolerant organisms becoming more abundant relative to sensitive organisms. The use of these two techniques is described, and their advantages and disadvantages as monitoring tools are discussed and exemplified by field data and laboratory experiments from different soils.

  • Occurrence of yeasts in faecal samples from Antarctic and South American seabirds
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Mycoses. - : Wiley. - 0933-7407 .- 1439-0507. ; 54:6, s. E811-E815
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During an expedition to the Southern Argentinean town of Ushuaia, the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic Islands and the Falkland Islands, we collected 94 faecal specimens from wild birds to screen for yeast within the different bird species. The yeast species were identified by morphological features and commercial characterisation kits. From 54% of the specimens, we isolated 122 strains representing 29 yeast species. Debaryomyces hansenii, Candida lambica and Candida krusei were the most frequently isolated species. We found a plethora of yeasts in birds living in proximity to humans, whereas birds living in more remote areas were colonised with a lower number of fungal species.

  • An integrated approach for remote manipulation of a high-performance reconfigurable parallel kinematic machine
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of manufacturing systems. - : Elsevier. - 0278-6125 .- 1878-6642. ; 29:4, s. 164-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flexible and effective manipulation is important and meaningful for the further development and applications of parallel manipulators in the industrial fields, especially for high performance manufacturing. Web-based manufacturing has emerged as an alternative manufacturing technology in a distributed environment. In this paper, an integrated approach is proposed for remote manipulation of the reconfigurable parallel kinematic machine (RPKM) based on sensor-driven Wise-ShopFloor framework. The concept of Wise-ShopFloor integrates the modules of detailed architecture design, module interactions, sensor data utilization and model predictive control. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of this novel methodology, an example of a five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) RPKM is developed for surface finishing. The reconfigurability, the necessary kinematic analysis, and the performance mapping of the 5-DOF RPKM are conducted so as to implement the proposed approach.

  • ANALYSIS OF K-CHANNEL MULTIPLE DESCRIPTION QUANTIZATION : 2009 DATA COMPRESSION CONFERENCE, PROCEEDINGS
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: DCC 2009. - LOS ALAMITOS, CA : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 9780769535920 ; , s. 53-62
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the tight rate-distortion bound for K-channel symmetric multiple-description coding for a memoryless Gaussian source. We find that the product of a function of the individual side distortions (for single received descriptions) and the central distortion (for K received descriptions) is asymptotically independent of the redundancy among the descriptions. Using this property, we analyze the asymptotic behaviors of two different practical multiple-description lattice vector quantizers (MDLVQ). Our analysis includes the treatment of a MDLVQ system from a new geometric viewpoint, which results in an expression for the side distortions using the normalized second moment of a sphere of higher dimensionality than the quantization space. The expression of the distortion product derived from the lower bound is then applied as a criterion to assess the performance losses of the considered MDLVQ systems.

  • Ranking with submodular functions on a budget
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Data mining and knowledge discovery. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1384-5810 .- 1573-756X. ; 36:3, s. 1197-1218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Submodular maximization has been the backbone of many important machine-learning problems, and has applications to viral marketing, diversification, sensor placement, and more. However, the study of maximizing submodular functions has mainly been restricted in the context of selecting a set of items. On the other hand, many real-world applications require a solution that is a ranking over a set of items. The problem of ranking in the context of submodular function maximization has been considered before, but to a much lesser extent than item-selection formulations. In this paper, we explore a novel formulation for ranking items with submodular valuations and budget constraints. We refer to this problem as max-submodular ranking (MSR). In more detail, given a set of items and a set of non-decreasing submodular functions, where each function is associated with a budget, we aim to find a ranking of the set of items that maximizes the sum of values achieved by all functions under the budget constraints. For the MSR problem with cardinality- and knapsack-type budget constraints we propose practical algorithms with approximation guarantees. In addition, we perform an empirical evaluation, which demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed algorithms against strong baselines.
