  • Ingår i: Colloquium Mathematicum. - : Polskiej Akademii Nauk, Instytut Matematyczny (Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute of Mathematics). - 0010-1354 .- 1730-6302. ; 133:2, s. 179-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We suggest a method of constructing decompositions of a topological space X having an open subset homeomorphic to the space (R-n , tau), where n is an integer greater than= 1 and tau is any admissible extension of the Euclidean topology of R-n (in particular, X can be a finite-dimensional separable metrizable manifold), into a countable family F of sets (dense in X and zero-dimensional in the case of manifolds) such that the union of each non-empty proper subfamily of F does not have the Baire property in X.

  • The impairment of speech perception in noise following pure tone hearing recovery in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12:1, s. 866-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To explore whether patients with unilateral idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (uISSNHL) have normal speech in noise (SIN) perception under different masking conditions after complete recovery of pure tone audiometry. Eight completely recovered uISSNHL patients were enrolled in ISSNHL group, while 8 normal-hearing adults matched with age, gender, and education experience were selected as the control group. Each group was tested SIN under four masking conditions, including noise and speech maskings with and without spatial separation cues. For both ISSNHL and control groups a two-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant effect of masking type (p = 0.007 vs p = 0.012). A significant effect of perceived spatial separation (p < 0.001 vs p < 0.001). A significant interaction between masking type and perceived spatial separation was found (p < 0.001 vs p < 0.001). A paired sample T-test showed that the SIN perception of the control group was statistically significant lower than that of ISSNHL patients only under speech masking without spatial separation cues (p = 0.011). There were still abnormalities in the auditory center shortly after complete recovery in the ISSNHL group (within 2 weeks). However, the auditory periphery and higher-level ability to use spatial cues was normal.

  • Sexual and gender-related harassment in medical education and research training: results from a Swedish survey
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Medical Education. - 0308-0110. ; 37:1, s. 39-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to establish the level of perceived sexual and gender-related harassment in undergraduate and doctoral studies, in which environment the events occurred, which categories of persons had committed the harassment, and other aspects of sexual harassment at the Faculty of Medicine, Gothenburg University. METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to all registered male and female undergraduate students (n= 605) and doctoral students (n=743) by mail to their home addresses. RESULTS: The response rate was 62% (840/1348). Of the total study population, 59% (495/840) of respondents reported at least one experience of derogatory jokes and comments, 54% (454/840) of respondents reported at least one experience of gender-related discrimination, and 22% (187/840) of respondents reported at least one incident of sexual harassment. More severe types of sexual harassment were reported by 9% (79/840) of respondents. Women, and especially undergraduate women, were more often exposed to all kinds of harassment than were men. Lecturers/professors, doctors and co-students were the categories most often identified as the harassers. The harassment mostly occurred during lectures, clinical work and coffee breaks. The most common types of self-perceived mistreatment were derogatory jokes and comments. CONCLUSION: This survey shows that sexual harassment happens to both men and women, although it is more commonly experienced by female undergraduate and doctoral students, and that it occurs in both the university and hospital environments. Universities should develop action plans to prevent such events. Students and teachers should be well informed about appropriate measures to take in situations where harassment is known or suspected to occur.

  • Can Baroreflex Sensitivity and Heart Rate Variability Predict Late Neurological Outcome in Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of neurosurgical anesthesiology. - 1537-1921. ; 26:1, s. 50-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies have suggested that depressed heart rate variability (HRV) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) are associated with early mortality and morbidity in patients with acute brain injuries of various etiologies. The aim of the present study was to assess changes in HRV and BRS in isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI), with the hypothesis that measurement of autonomic nervous system dysfunction can provide prognostic information on late neurological outcome.

  • Electrochemical detection of DNA mismatches using a branch-shaped hierarchical SWNT-DNA nano-hybrid bioelectrode
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Materials science & engineering. C, biomimetic materials, sensors and systems. - : ELSEVIER. - 0928-4931 .- 1873-0191. ; 104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Common approaches for DNA mutation detection are high cost and have difficult or complex procedure. We propose a fast quantitative method for recognition of DNA mutation based on SWNT/DNA self-assembled nanostructure. Covalent SWNT/DNA hybrid nanostructures are widely used in the fabrication of electrochemical biosensors. Interfacing carbon nanotubes with DNA in particular, is used as a detection method for the analysis of genetic disorders or the detection of mismatches in DNA hybridisation. We have designed a self-assembled, branch-shaped hybrid nanostructure by hybridisation of two sticky oligos that are attached to the ends of SWNTs via a linker oligo. These hybrid nanostructures showed a good conductivity that was greater than free SWNTs. Impedance spectroscopy studies illustrated that the conductivity of these hybrid nanostructures depended on the conformation and structure of the hybridised DNA. We demonstrated that the strategy of using SWNT/DNA self-assembled hybrid nanostructure fabrication yields sensitive and selective tools to discriminate mismatches in DNA. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and impedance spectroscopy clearly revealed that the conductivity of the branch-shaped and hierarchical hybridised SWNT/DNA nanostructure is higher when matched, than when mismatched in a 1 and 1 hybridised SWNT/DNA nanostructure. Rapid biosensing of match and mismatch nanostructure based on carbon printed electrode showed similar results which can be used for rapid and fast detection of DNA mismatch.

  • Convergence and Semi-Convergence of a Class of Constrained Block Iterative Methods
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Numerical Functional Analysis and Optimization. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC. - 0163-0563 .- 1532-2467. ; 42:14, s. 1718-1746
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we analyze the convergence properties of projected non-stationary block iterative methods (P-BIM) aiming to find a constrained solution to large linear, usually both noisy and ill-conditioned, systems of equations. We split the error of the kth iterate into noise error and iteration error, and consider each error separately. The iteration error is treated for a more general algorithm, also suited for solving split feasibility problems in Hilbert space. The results for P-BIM come out as a special case. The algorithmic step involves projecting onto closed convex sets. When these sets are polyhedral, and of finite dimension, it is shown that the algorithm converges linearly. We further derive an upper bound for the noise error of P-BIM. Based on this bound, we suggest a new strategy for choosing relaxation parameters, which assist in speeding up the reconstruction process and improving the quality of obtained images. The relaxation parameters may depend on the noise. The performance of the suggested strategy is shown by examples taken from the field of image reconstruction from projections.

  • Pedagogiska miljöer och barns subjektskapande
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main purpose of the study is to provide perspectives and contribute to the discussion about how children´s identities and subjectivity are made in pre-schools and schools; both how children look upon and understand themselves in the educational context and how they are perceived and described by others. The intentions have been to open possibilities to regard the educational environment as an important condition for children´s behaviour and doings and thus as conditions for their level of performance and for the identity that is ascribed to each child. The study is framed within a postmodern, or constructionistic, perspective. Through what is called the postmodern “linguistic turn” the dominant psychological focus on children´s characteristics, “inner” world and earlier experiencies could move towards a focus on concepts, theories and pedagogical practices as decisive of how children are seen and described. The first part of the study focuses on the organization of time, space and materials in preschools and classrooms. The analyses indicate that the materials for children´s activities and learning are relatively sparse and limited, with small variations and little materials that can be seen as easy to concentrate on and that catch and keep children´s attention. The regulations of time and space can be seen as surprisingly strong. Rooms and materials are strongly classified and framed. This indicates a small space in terms of children´s influence and demands a great deal of adaptation of each child. Historically this way of organizing pedagogical environments seems dominant in the Swedish tradition during the 2000th century. The second part focuses on different theoretical understandings of child – environment relations. The purpose is firstly to understand the strong tendency to individualize children´s behaviour and what happens in pre-schools and classrooms – despite the dominant theories of interactionism. This is accomplished by investigating the central theoretical concepts “individual”, “identity” and “development” as constituted within the Western modernistic tradition and as carrying meanings that individualize the relation between child and environment. Secondly the purpose is to create a theoretical space tounderstand children´s behaviour, performances and identities as changing and as inseparable of actual environments and situations. This is accomplished by using poststructural theories of subjectivity and the individual´s relation to the environment. The uniform and homogenous environment restricts children´s different ways to create meaningfulness and to relate positively to affordances and educational tasks. This increases the risks of exclusion and that more children are perceived as failing and deviating. A prerequisite for children´s diversities and variations to be acknowledged and accepted is that also pre-schools and classrooms are characterized by diversity and variation.
