  • Iconography of suffering in social media : images of sitting girls

  • Ingår i: World suffering and quality of life. - Dordrecht : Springer. - 9789401796699 - 9789401796705 ; , s. 341-355
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the online iconography of mental suffering by using the visual trope of a hunched-over sitting girl as a case in point. By analyzing images of sitting girls found in YouTube video montages on self-harm, and also tracking their further online existence through image search engines, we suggest that the popularity of this trope stems from its generic character, where the girl can be read as simultaneously docile and as actively refusing to engage with the world around her. While not new in itself, the trope is circulated and put to use in new ways through social media with emphasis on remix and visual communication. We argue that media-specific features, together with gender and mental health discourses, enable particular representations and aesthetic styles that may both reinforce and alleviate suffering.

  • The girl in the corner : aesthetics of suffering in a digitalized space
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Narratives of suffering. - Oxford : Inter-Disciplinary Press. - 9781848883611 - 9789004374492 ; , s. 105-115
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Internet may provide the means for otherwise marginalized groups – such as young people with mental health problems – to make their voices heard in public, and online representations are therefore an important source for studying how emotions are conceptualized and communicated in these groups. In an on-going study of YouTube video montages on the subject of self-injury, we have found one emblematic and frequently occurring character: a girl sitting alone in a corner, on the floor, with drawn up knees and head bent down. Images of this character are widespread, not only on YouTube but also on blogs, discussion forums and websites. Together with her likewise sitting 'sisters' – the girl on the swing, the girl on the pier and on the railway track – she is taken to represent young people's unhappiness, pain and misery. Our chapter sets out to explore in greater detail how this character emerges as a signifier of gendered suffering in online contexts. We argue that it contributes to an aestheticization of suffering that often seems to emanate from the rejection of conventional ideals and hegemonic definitions of normality; the embracing of suffering might, thus, be used as a strategy for achieving social distinction. Also, we suggest in our chapter that the girl in the corner and similar representations may be seen as facilitating certain emotional identifications, especially as regards gender.

  • Digital humanities in Sweden and its infrastructure : Status quo and the sine qua non
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Digital Scholarship in the Humanities. - Oxford : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2055-7671 .- 2055-768X. ; 35:3, s. 547-556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article offers a state-of-the-art overview of a number of Digital Humanities (DH) initiatives that have emerged in Sweden over the past decade. We identify two major developments that seem to be taking place within DH, with a specific focus on the infrastructural aspects of the development: (1) a strive to open up and broaden the research output and (2) multi-disciplinary collaboration and its effects. The two major components accentuate the new infrastructural patterns that are developing and the challenges these infer on universities. While current research is at large multi-disciplinary, developing infrastructures also enable the move towards post-disciplinarity, bringing the universities closer to the surrounding society. At five universities in Sweden, individual-sited infrastructures supporting DH research have been built today. They are complemented by national and international infrastructures, thus supporting developments and tackling some of the major challenges. In the article, the relations between individual disciplines, the question of multi- and post-disciplinarity, and the field of Digital Humanities are discussed, while stressing the factors necessary—sine qua non—for a fruitful development of the scholarly infrastructures.

  • Digital Archaeology? Greece on Focus : Tools, methodologies and trends
  • 2017
  • Annan publikation (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Archaeology is an interdisciplinary science, as it is a scholarly study of past processes that often combines space, place, natural science, materials and texts in its interpretation. Presently, the majority of practicing archaeologists include digital tools in their work (e.g. data keeping, digital mapping, visualization tools). And recently, digital visualization is trending beyond 3D modelling and landscape reconstruction and into the interactive, scientific visualization of data in order to render relations between geographies and cultures, sensory properties (Betts 2011, Betts 2017, Foka and Arvidsson 2016), external /internal networks and aerial visualizations. On an international level, we have come to speak of the notion of “cyber-archaeology” (Forte 2015): archaeological methods that utilize participatory technology to interact with past artefacts and spaces and to understand the past through reflection and cooperative efforts. Current digital tools and methodologies help capture and display knowledge about the past. While there is considerable room for improvement, both in terms of tools and of methodologies, from composing plain databases to visualizations intended for wider museum audiences, we address here the current progress within Greek archaeological practice and emphasize the importance of sustainable and updated digital research infrastructures in order to enhance access to materials for researchers and laypeople alike.

  • det meränmänskliga museet : Konservatorns bevarandepraktik som flyktlinje i modernitetens museum
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis takes the conservator as a starting point to explore more-than-human aspects of the museum of modernity. Assuming that built-in obstacles impinge when museums today deal with environmental issues‚ it investigates new and alternative perspectives on the engagement with our immediate surroundings, in this case the museum objects. The objective of this study is to map museum processes hidden in the anthropocentric museum of modernity. The aim is to broaden the perspective on the museum to include what the museum structures of modernity have pushed aside: ongoing processes and becomings, and the myriad of energetic more-than-human agencies and temporalities constantly at work in a museum. The main empirical material consists of interviewes with conservators working in different departements and museums in Sweden. This material also includes my own experiences of working as a conservator and as an exhibition producer in various museums. There is a particular focus on the care of objects performed by conservators. The material also includes Swedish Government Official Reports (SOU) and one central text from the Ministry Publications Series (Ds). Furthermore, more-than-human agencies play an important role: enacted through the museum apparatus in shape of humidity and silverfish.Posthuman theory, environmental humanities and material feminism form the overarching theoretical framework as well as provide the analytical tools. Three main themes from these theoretical areas run throughout the entire thesis: anthropocentrism, more-than-human agency, dualistic thinking and dichotomies. All of which are applied to the empirical material.  To conclude, museums have been part of modernity’s ambitions and ideals since they were established just over 100 years ago. This thesis shows how, in the structures of the museum, modernity’s ideas have persisted. Furthermore, these structures of thought appear and interfere, inter alia, in the conservator’s experiences of and thoughts about their work and professional identity. However, when working intimately with the museum objects more-than-human relational processes and other productive connections emerge, whereby the structures, derived from moderity’s thinking, are challenged in productive ways. This forms the line of flight that the title refers to; here perceived as a possibility for change, in a direction that could promote new ways for museums to tackle complex more-than-human issues, such as climate change and environmental matters.

  • Gränsbygdens folk : Glesbygdens självbilder - en jämförelse mellan Lierne i Norge och Frostviken i Sverige
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Brännpunkt Norrland. - Umeå : Bokförlaget h:ström - Text & Kultur. - 9789173272230 ; , s. 236-262
