  • Rymden och människan : rymdforskning i humaniora, konst och samhällsvetenskap
  • 2015. - 1

  • Review of Deep time reckoning: how future thinking can help Earth now, by Vincent Ialenti, Cambridge MA and London, MIT Press, 2020, 186 pp., £22 (paperback), ISBN 978-0-26253926-5
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Time & Mind. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1751-696X .- 1751-6978. ; 14:4, s. 543-546
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It took me until reaching the conclusion to realise what had bothered me while reading this book: Deep Time Reckoning is an ethnographic monograph that does not take a culturally relativistic perspective on human behaviour. Vincent Ialenti knows what is right and wrong for people to do. But he is not so much a politically driven, knowledgeable advocate fighting for the interests of his tribe in dominant global society, as he is a politically driven advocate fighting to save the planet by urging everybody else in global society to do exactly as his tribe does. This is intriguing.

  • Changing Concepts of Temporality in Cultural Heritage and Themed Environments
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Time and Temporality in Theme Parks. - Hannover : Wehrhahn Verlag. - 9783865255488 ; , s. 115-130
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Theme parks and other themed environments commonly evoke stories about the past in order to provide their customers with enjoyable experiences. The underlying visions of the past can easily be dismissed as creative fiction drawing on common stereotypes. Usually, these visions are only very loosely related either to historical accounts based on academic research or to genuine cultural heritage. However, rather than dwelling on anachronisms in theme parks, I am interested in this paper in exploring discernible connections between cultural heritage and artificiality, authenticity and theming. Even cultural heritage needs to evoke stories about the past to provide visitors with enjoyable experiences. I argue that an important precondition for that to succeed is not the historical age of an observed object but its pastness. Pastness denotes the perceived quality that a given object is of the past. Pastness is not immanent in an object but may result from the object’s appearance (e.g. patina), its context (e.g. in a museum), or its correspondence with preconceived expectations among the audience. Therefore, pastness can – and indeed must – be designed and managed. There are thus important lessons to be learned from successful theme parks for cultural heritage management. I conclude by speculating about the social significance of fictitious heritage in themed environments.

  • L’apport du patrimoine culturel à la société : changements en cours
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Museum International (French edition). - : Wiley. - 1020-2226 .- 1755-5825. ; 63:1-2, s. 8-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Making Sense of Virtual Heritage : How Immersive Fitness Evokes a Past that Suits the Present
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Virtual Interiorities. - : ETC Press. - 9781387504978 ; , s. 77-98
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the sensory experiences and the socio-cultural and socio-political contexts of digitally generated cultural heritage. As a case study, we use Les Mills' "The Trip", an immersive and multi-modal fitness regime where participants ride stationary bicycles in front of a large, domed screen where a winding road through a computer-generated hilly landscape is projected as a motivational aid. While these landscapes are imaginary and unrealistic, many reference various stereotypical cultural heritages so that participants ride through alleys of Greek statues, around futuristic Egyptian pyramids, or through a pirate ship at the bottom of the ocean. In the article, we consider the nature of this invented heritage at the interface of tangible and intangible heritage, the way it appeals to people emotionally and sensorially, and the social, physical, cultural and political consequences and implications of such digital heritage “trips”. The authors have different disciplinary backgrounds and interests which will inform the joint discussion: archaeology/heritage studies and literary and visual culture/decolonisation. On the one hand, we see a need to study the ethics and politics of the idealising and stereotypical representations of the past that are being used. On the other hand, there are also important lessons to be learned about heritage aesthetics, bodily perceptions of heritage and its relation to self, the creation of pastness, consequences for quality of (real) life and well-being both within the bounded and physical space of the fitness locale and outside it. The paper argues that virtual experiences of (future) past are no less significant or important than experiences IRL, especially as they may overlap with each other and are ultimately difficult to distinguish, both in terms of the experience they provide and in terms of their consequences in society.

  • On Pastness : A Reconsideration of Materiality in Archaeological Object Authenticity
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Anthropological Quarterly. - : Project Muse. - 0003-5491 .- 1534-1518. ; 86:2, s. 427-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues for a modified constructivist approach to archaeological object authenticity which takes the object’s materiality seriously. This is accomplished by defining authenticity not in relation to the age of an object but to its age-value, i.e., the quality or condition of being (of the) past—its pastness. Pastness is the result of a particular perception or experience. It derives from, among others, material clues indicating wear and tear, decay, and disintegration. These material clues, and thus the presence of pastness, can be created entirely in the present.

  • Reconsidering Heritage Destruction and Sustainable Development in a Long-Term Perspective
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Heritage Destruction. - : Routledge. - 9781003131069 ; , s. 413-423
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter proposes that heritage destruction can be seen as a medium and manifestation of dynamic transformation that ultimately allows more sustainable forms of development to emerge, not least when seen in the context of long-term change. Using insights from current debates on heritage futures and examples from cultural history, we argue that Heritage Studies needs a critical and open-minded discussion of the existing and potential effects of cultural heritage in society, potentially even developing a code of not simply conservation but destruction, change, and decay.
