    • The article examines a selection of children’s letters sent to the editor of the Swedish annual Christmas publication Jultomten (Father Christmas) during three years at the turn of the century 1900. The aim is to show how children responded to the editor’s invitation to write letters to the journal, how the children commented on some of the images, and how their appreciation and involvement were articulated in terms of reader engagement, interpretation, and identification. For this purpose, the letters were analyzed with the help of visual literacy theories and methods, which focus on primary school children’s picture (and picturebook) reception. The results show that the children’s response to the chosen images varies according to their level of involvement and degree of visual literacy competence.

    • The introduction discusses and theorizes the two key concepts that frame and inform the book, transmediation and translation, and how these interconnected and related concepts can be specifically applied to the study of children’s literature. In the following, the division of the chapters into five sections, and the rationale behind this structure, are discussed. It is claimed that each of the sections shed light on vital aspects of translating and transmediating children’s literature. The section headings are: “Inter-/Intra-Cultural Transformations,” “Image-textual Interactions,” “Metapictorial Potentialities,” “Digital Media Transitions,” and “Intergenerational Transmissions.” Finally, the individual chapters are outlined and summarized.

    • En fråga som sysselsatt våra tankar under senare tid är hur vårt uppdrag som lärare i litteraturvetenskap (och övrig humaniora) ska se ut i framtiden. Att undervisa i humaniora verkar idag i allt högre grad innebära att konfronteras med frågan hur undervisningen, ända ner i dess minsta beståndsdelar, kan examineras. Hur kan man veta vilket betyg en viss student förtjänarpå en specifik del av ett seminarium? Är gruppdiskussioner ens möjliga eller blir de överflödiga om de inte går att övervaka och examinera? Denna tendens – att examinationen blir viktigare än både undervisningens innehåll och former – kan förstås som en följd av ökad detaljstyrning generellt inom den högre utbildningens ramverk, men vi upplever det också som att dagens studenter ofta anammar och internaliserar detta synsätt. Vi gick därför ut med en förfrågan till olika universitet och högskolor för att undersöka om några delade vår uppfattning: Håller du med om beskrivningen ovan? Är denna tendens i så fall ett problem eller något att omfamna? Hur bör litteraturvetenskapen förhålla sig till denna utveckling? Kan vi fortsätta som vi alltid har gjort, eller kommer detta att förändra möjligheterna att bedriva undervisning i litteraturvetenskap? Finns det därför skäl att protestera? Här nedan ger några litteraturvetare sin syn på problematiken.

    • The concept of silence and silencing evokes questions of self in relation to others, of language and of communication, even of what it is that makes us human. It contains numerous interpretative possibilities, all highly relevant for the study of children’s literature. Aiming the searchlight at silence and silencing points at the multiple ways in which children’s literature functions, and how complex and varied – and sometimes paradoxical – children’s literature is as a field. The relationship between children’s literature and silence suggests an intriguing tension between voicing and silencing, between speech and the unspoken. While children’s literature tends to be considered a liberating and empowering force in children’s lives, it can also be seen as implicated in a widespread and deeply rooted discourse of silence and silencing, which draws on the idea that children should be seen but not heard. The theme also draws attention to how children’s literature can both challenge and reinforce notions of which subjects are tabooed or censored, which further points to the necessity of examining the silences and lacunae within children’s literature.This volume springs out of a global congress, IRSCL Congress 2019: Silence and Silencing in Children’s Literature, organized by the editors of this volume in Stockholm, Sweden. The volume includes the five keynotes of the congress as well as a selection of studies sprung from congress presentations. It is divided into five sections: Multiple Facets of Silence and Silencing, Narrating Silence, Addressing Aetonormative Silences, Structural and Societal Silences and Silencing, and Trauma and Traumatic Silences. The book is edited by Elina Druker, Professor at Stockholm University, Sweden; Björn Sundmark, Professor at Malmö University, Sweden; Åsa Warnqvist, Docent and Research Manager at the Swedish Institute for Children’s Books, Sweden, and Mia Österlund, Associate Professor at Åbo Akademi University, Finland.

  • ’But the Story Itself Is Intact’ (or is it?) : The Case of the English Translations of The Wonderful Adventures of Nils

    • In the foreword to the first English translation of The Further Adventures of Nils (orig. 1907, transl. 1911) Velma Swanston Howard acknowledges that “some of the purely geographical matter in the Swedish original … has been eliminated” and that “with the author’s approval, cuts have been made where the descriptive matter was merely of local interest”. She concludes with the words: “But the story itself is intact”. Now, one can certainly sympathize somewhat with the translator and a presumptive international audience and feel that they should be spared some of the geo-trivia of the original. However, the first book, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (1906, transl 1907), had not been subjected to the same kind of topographic cleansing, and it had still been a resounding success internationally. So, why the change of editorial practice? Even more troublesome: despite Howard’s protestations it is clear that what has been eliminated is not just “geographical matter”, but key scenes of great importance to the overall story, some of which have never been translated into English. In my paper I will focus on two of the most interesting elisions: the death and burial of Little Mats, and the pivotal actions in the Uppsala chapter. The latter episode does exist in an English version, but one based on an abridged and simplified version (1962/1989); the Little Mts-episode has never been translated as far as I know. I will discuss how Howard argues and negotiates the issues at stake with Lagerlöf in the light of their correspondence, material that has hitherto remained unexamined in the Royal Library collection in Stockholm.
