  • The Purposes of Internationalisation – Future Teachers’ Perspectives
  • 2025
  • Ingår i: Journal of Education for Teaching. - 0260-7476 .- 1360-0540. ; 51:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research investigates the purposes of internationalisation from the perspective of a group of international prospective teachers studying at a Swedish university. The results show that the prospective teachers’ understanding of internationalisation corresponds to three ideologies of internationalisation – idealism, instrumentalism, and educationalism – but there is also evidence of a more complex and multifaceted understanding of internationalisation. We propose that a new internationalisation ideology may be emerging that corresponds to ideas about ‘responsible internationalisation’ and is connected to the Covid-19 pandemic and changing geopolitics. The importance of taking future teachers’ viewpoints into account, as well as a considering changes to global and local educational contexts, is emphasised when formulating internationalisation strategies in teacher education.

  • Ascetic poetry in ancient India : The ideal renouncer and the path to liberation, according to independent verses in early Brahmanic, Buddhist, and Jaina literature
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation identifies the ideal renouncer and the path to liberation on the basis of nearly 3500 “independent verses”, i.e. one-strophe stanzas (gāthās, ślokas), in early Brahmanic, Buddhist, and Jaina literature, including Mahābhārata, Suttanipāta, Dhammapada, Saṃyuttanikāya, Uttarajjhayaṇa, Sūyagaḍa, Isibhāsiyāiṃ, and other texts. It is argued that this genre of poetry is important for our knowledge about the ascetic milieu in Northern India around the 5th century BCE.Verses from the three traditions are compared with one another, the verse-material is compared with selected texts belonging to other genres, and the literature is placed in its historical context. Attention is given to vocabulary, formulas, similes, and recurrent themes. Hypotheses about the early history of the renouncer-traditions are tested against the verse-material.Part 1 discusses aim, theory, method, terminology, previous studies, earliness and authenticity of the verses, origins and characteristics of the genre, and relevant texts. Part 2 treats the debated origins of emancipatory askesis, brāhmaṇa and śramaṇa, authority and founder-figures, and female ascetics. Part 3 proceeds along an ideal path to liberation: from reasons for giving up mundane pursuits, to going forth into homelessness, practise of austerity, itinerancy, solitude, seclusion, mendicancy, purification, non-harm, restraint, heroic overcoming of obstacles, and meditation, to attainment of gnosis and awakening, and finally liberation from saṃsāra. Part 4 is the conclusion. The Appendices contain the entire verse-material, as well as defining sentences in final pādas, shared whole verses, and key-terms.It is concluded that in the three verse-corpora one can identify a shared outlook, which is world-rejecting, autocentric, and telos-oriented, and a shared renouncer-ideal, which is male, heroic, and austere. The same outlook and ideal are found in narrative accounts about Śākyamuni, Mahāvīra, and others who attain the highest goal. Differences between the three traditions concern mainly the use of certain terms, formulas, and similes, less so doctrine, but the differences are not reducible to a divide between Brahmanic and Buddhist/Jaina.Generally speaking, each tradition has composed its own verses that promote a renouncer-ideal and a path to liberation, rather than having borrowed verses from another tradition or from a common source. The many similarities between the three traditions are primarily due to their common origin in the ascetic milieu, in which the one-strophe gāthā was an established literary medium for making authoritative statements. It is argued that the shared outlook and ideal were established before the introduction of two-step ordination, nuns’ order, fourfold community, devotion to an exalted founder-figure, and the building of monasteries. The verse-content points to a rural environment and a stratified society rooted in late Vedic culture. The renunciant movement of the 5th century BCE can be seen as the culmination of a centuries-old ascetic tradition in ancient India.

    • Study of the mission of Jesus in his political age as depicted in the Swedish translation Bible 2000 for ”a common reader” without theological, historical, or exegetical expertise . Jesus is approached as a literary character and the Biblical text is analuýsed as a literary work. Methods of the study are response aesthetics and rhetorics. Overarching issues are: What might the printed text tell a modern secular Swedish reader, reading attentively? More precisely: What image of Jesus and his mission is presented; how is it narrated, and what does the narrating imply about his mission? what kind of reception do the texts prepare? what didactic and rhetorical techniques does Jesus hinself use to present himself and his message for his audience within the text? The result of the analysis is 1) that Jesus uses a special didacticism, including a strategic rhetoric of offense, confronting the prejudices of his audience and forcing them to reflect anew ; 2) that Jesus presents himself as a divine saviour from sin and death, and not as a political activist. Nevertheless, his message of love of the neighbour, the importance of equality before God, and caring for the outcast and contempted implies a politics of solidarity, justice, and social welfare for everyone.

  • Technological power, complex systems, and boundary objects in global energy transitions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: FRONTIERS IN HUMAN DYNAMICS. - 2673-2726. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study makes a case for why the field of political ecology (PE) would benefit from deep engagement with technological power, and exemplifies this within the domain of energy studies and the ongoing transformation of the energy sector. Technology is not among the core interests or traditional topics of PE-and is therefore often disregarded or treated as a black box. The argument presented in this study asserts that this omission undermines the analytical power and the relevance of the field. Technology is the central mechanism whereby socionatures evolve and how relationships are negotiated and enacted. The attitude towards technical things is partly based on the idea that technologies are just artefacts of little interest. Cross-field dialogue is also hindered by perceived ontological conflicts. This study draws upon research from the philosophy of technology and sociotechnical systems theory to introduce a dynamic understanding of technological power. Seeing what technology does and has the potential to do requires looking beyond the common emphasis on dominance and control, to the myriad ways in which technologies shape our everyday lives, ontologies, and imagining of the future. Taking on a contentious concept, I advocate for the use of "systems" as a boundary object suitable for cross-field dialogue. As an analytical construct without inherent scale, it works as a framing device for moving power and knowledge claims to the forefront, while also allowing dialogue outside academia.
