- Background: The pediatric diabetes team aims to support health, quality of life, and normal growth and development among adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Adolescents with an immigrant background have been found less successful in self-care. Previous research indicated that adolescents who had integrated the disease as a part of their self-image reasoned differently about their self-care to those who had not. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify elements in the patient–pediatrician consultations that might influence such integration of the disease among adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A total of 12 pediatrician–adolescent consultations were video-recorded and analyzed. The adolescents all had an immigrant background. Results: Integration of the disease appeared enabled when responsibility was shared; when hope, autonomy, and emotions were confirmed; and when the pediatrician asked probing questions. Letting objective data dominate the adolescent’s experiences, using risk as a motivator, neutralizing emotions in relation to having diabetes, and confirming forgetfulness, may instead inhibit disease integration. Conclusion: An extended person-centered approach with focus on the adolescent’s experiences of everyday life with a chronic disease and less attention on physical parameters in the pediatrician–adolescent consultations may increase integration of the disease.

- Vad är lycka och lidande och hur kan vi påverka vår egen och andras lycka? Hur hänger lycka ihop med livskvalitet – är det samma sak eller finns det även andra saker som gör ett liv bra? Hur stark är vår moraliska plikt att att göra världen lyckligare och hur kan man i detalj formulera en etisk ”lyckoprincip” så att den blir så rimlig som möjligt? Första delen av den här boken handlar om grundläggande frågor som en lyckans och lidandets etik måste besvara. Men den stannar inte där utan går vidare till hur vi praktiskt kan gå tillväga för att öka lyckan och minska lidandet i världen. Vilka förhållningssätt bör vi försöka tillägna oss? Vilka karaktärsdrag bör vi utveckla? Hur bör vi bemöta andra människor? Hur bör samhället organiseras? Hur bör de globala spelreglerna utformas? För att svara på sådana frågor behöver vi kunskap om vilka faktorer som påverkar lycka och lidande hos människor och andra levande varelser och boken innehåller därför även en översikt över de senaste decenniernas empiriska lyckoforskning.Boken ger inga detaljerade recept på hur man gör sig själv eller andra lyckligare, men den ger en karta över ett spännande territorium och ett användbart sätt att tänka för världsförbättrare och andra lyckofrämjare.

- The aim of this presentation is to explore the work ‘The Ethics of Ambiguity’ (‘Pour une morale de l'ambiguïté’) bySimone de Beauvoir published in 1947. ‘The Ethics of Ambiguity’ consists of three parts and a short conclusion wherede Beauvoir puts out the philosophical underpinnings of her stance on an existentialist ethic. de Beauvoir's mostilluminating argument in this work is her description of the development of man and the order of human beings whoface the ambiguity of existence. In the symposium, questions will be discussed on the interpretation and meaning ofthe concept ambiguity, and how de Beauvoir’s way of seeing human beings might relate to education and ReligiousEducation in our neoliberal conditions

- Francois Recanati has recently argued that each perceptual state has two distinct kinds of content, complete and explicit content. According to Recanati, the former is a function of the latter and the psychological mode of perception. Furthermore, he has argued that explicit content is temporally neutral and that time-consciousness is a feature of psychological mode. In this paper it is argued, pace Recanati, that explicit content is not temporally neutral. Recanati's position is initially presented. Three desiderata for a theory of time-consciousness are subsequently introduced. It is then argued that a theory locating time-consciousness as a feature of psychological mode will fail to satisfy these desiderata. In the last section the intentionality of memories is discussed. Using the notion of shiftable indexical, it is argued that memories have the same explicit content as perceptions, but that they nevertheless can have different conditions of satisfaction since they are entertained in different modes.

Can successful mood enhancement make us less happy?

- The main question is whether chemically induced mood enhancement is (if successful) likely to make us happier, or whether it may rather have detrimental effects on our long-term happiness. This question is divided into three: (i) What effects are mood-enhancing drugs likely to have on the long-term happiness of the person who takes these drugs? (ii) How would these drugs affect the happiness of the immediate environment of the people who take them, e.g. children or spouses? (iii) What effects would a wide-spread use of mood-enhancing drugs have on society as a whole, and how would this affect the long-term happiness of its citizens? My answers to these questions are very tentative, partly because we know too little about what non-hedonic effects these drugs can be expected to have. It is possible that these drugs would have detrimental effects on some determinants of happiness, however, e.g. marriage and friendship, social and physical activity, rational problem-solving and mental effectiveness, political participation and interpersonal trust. But on the other hand, there are also a number of determinants of happiness that might be positively affected by a wide-spread and frequent use of mood-enhancing drugs.
