- Vad är en rätt handling? Hur kan religiösa traditioner bidra till etisk reflektion? Vad innebär det att respektera människovärdet inom biomedicinsk etik och sexualetik? Detta är några av de frågor som diskuteras i denna introduktion till teologisk och filosofisk etik. Här presenteras klassiska teorier inom normativ etik och etisk teori. Dessa granskas också kritiskt. I dialog med utilitarism och dygdetik argumenterar författarna för en modifierad variant av kantiansk etik, vars grund är principen om lika respekt för vars och ens värdighet. Vidare behandlas tillämpad etik ingående, särskilt politisk etik, miljöetik, biomedicinsk etik och sexualetik. Feministisk etik ges stort utrymme. Läsaren får också inblick i skilda religioners etik. Särskilt uppmärksammas kristen etik, men också judendomens etik och muslimsk etik.

I vilken utsträckning präglas moralen av skilda sociala kontexter och kulturella traditioner?Dessa är några av de frågor som behandlas i denna bok. Den diskuterar moralfilosofiska teorier och aktuella problem inom miljöetik, medicinsk etik, samlevnadsetik och ekonomisk etik. Särskilt uppmärksammas hur skilda teorier om moralen är relaterade till kristen tro och andra livsåskådningar.I boken argumenteras för uppfattningen att etisk reflektion är inbäddad i skilda traditioner och präglas av skilda sociala och kulturella kontexter. Samtidigt hävdas att etisk rationalitet inte är helt kontextberoende, varför det är möjligt att föra en dialog i etiska frågor över traditionsgränserna. Detta innebär för kristen etik att den öppen för en ömsesidig dialog med etiken inom andra livsåskådningar och inom moralfilosofin.

- The imperative theory of law exemplified in the work of John Austin is the object of much criticism in the movement of Scandinavian legal realism (SLR). The very core notions of command, sovereignty and will are targeted. This paper explores the Scandinavian readings of Austin’s theory, chiefly by reconstructing the main arguments of Axel Hägerström’s criticism of the will-theory and Karl Olivecrona’s reading of the imperative character of law. Special attention is paid to the affinities between the various outlooks and to their core differences. On one hand, strong resemblances can be discovered in the common methodological afflatus and respect for Hume’s principle. On the other hand – apart from contrasting opinions on minor aspects (such as tacit consent grounding custom) – among the unbridgeable divergences mention should be made of the view on morals: Austin embraced a form of cognitivism, while the Scandinavians supported a strict form of non-cognitivism. In order to assess the originality of the Scandinavian attack on the imperative theory of law, the aim of the paper is to test to what extent it stimulated the seminal work on the question of law’s authoritative dimension in SLR.

- The arena for developing digital technology has undergone an aesthetic turn, broadening the focus from a functionalist approach producing centralized systems in the 1970s and 1980s to an increased awareness of the aesthetic aspects of the individual user’s interaction with technology in the 1990s and 2000s. Within the academic research fields studying digital technology (e.g. Human-Computer Interaction and Interaction Design) the aesthetic turn has resulted in a shift from a strong emphasis on user behaviour to an increased interest in aesthetic perspectives on the role of the designer, the design process, and the design material. Within these fields, aesthetics has often been interpreted as belonging to the realm of the individual; personal experiences such as pleasure, engagement, and emotions have been emphasized in both technology development and technology research. Aesthetics is not, however, only an individual phenomenon but also has relational and structural components that need to be acknowledged. Structural aspects of aesthetics condition the possibilities for individuals interacting with digital technology. Thus, the tension between individual and relational aspects of aesthetics in digital technology also reflects a tension between freedom and limitation; between change and permanence; between destabilizing and stabilizing forces. Such a broadened understanding of aesthetics offers a model of digital technology that roughly corresponds to Mark C. Taylor’s definition of religion. Taylor argues that religion is constituted by, on the one hand, a figuring moment characterized by structural stability and universality, and, on the other hand, a disfiguring moment characterized by disruption, particularity, and change. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the aesthetic turn and Taylor’s definition of religion to illustrate similarities between the two, suggesting possible religious dimensions of digital technology and how that can inform our understanding of people’s interaction with digital technology.

- There are different dominant perspectives, theories, and methodologies within neuroethics, each importantly shaping the identification, understanding, and discussion of the relevant ethical, social, philosophical and scientific issues. In this chapter, we first provide a brief overview of current neuroethical approaches calling attention to a common tendency to underestimate the role and value of conceptual analysis. Against that background, we present and develop the theoretical framework of fundamental neuroethics. Next, we suggest that neuroethics should be built on the sound scientific and philosophical foundations of informed materialism. Finally, we apply the proposed theoretical framework to the neuroethical discussion of brain simulation.

- BackgroundEthical analyses of disorders of consciousness traditionally focus on residual awareness. Going one step further, this paper explores the potential ethical relevance of the unawareness retained by patients with disorders of consciousness, focusing specifically on the ethical implications of the description of the unconscious provided by recent scientific research.MethodsA conceptual methodology is used, based on the review and analysis of relevant scientific literature on the unconscious and the logical argumentation in favour of the ethical conclusions.ResultsTwo conditions (experiential wellbeing and having interests) that are generally considered critical components in the ethical discussion of patients with disorders of consciousness might arguably be both conscious and unconscious.ConclusionsThe unconscious, as well as consciousness, should be taken into account in the ethical discussions of patients with disorders of consciousness.
