  • Why nature matters : A systematic review of intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BioScience. - : Oxford University Press. - 0006-3568 .- 1525-3244. ; 74:1, s. 25-43
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we present results from a literature review of intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values of nature conducted for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, as part of the Methodological Assessment of the Diverse Values and Valuations of Nature. We identify the most frequently recurring meanings in the heterogeneous use of different value types and their association with worldviews and other key concepts. From frequent uses, we determine a core meaning for each value type, which is sufficiently inclusive to serve as an umbrella over different understandings in the literature and specific enough to help highlight its difference from the other types of values. Finally, we discuss convergences, overlapping areas, and fuzzy boundaries between different value types to facilitate dialogue, reduce misunderstandings, and improve the methods for valuation of nature's contributions to people, including ecosystem services, to inform policy and direct future research.

  • The Delphic Room : An Artistically Derived Metaphor
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In his well-known thought experiment regarding artificial intelligence (AI), John Searle sketched out the philosophic idea of “The Chinese room” – a room in which comprehensible rules (a program) allow a person to perfectly correlate one set of unknown linguistic symbols (a question) with another (an answer) of the same unfamiliar kind. In our creation of an AI-based micro-opera for humans and machines, we have come to reflect upon our concept as an artistic response to Searle’s arguments and a mirroring complement to his debated figure. Our immersive and interactive opera was conceived as a modular series of musically paced meetings between individual visitors and a singing seeress in contact with the digital realm. As an analogy to the Delphic oracle, the seeress delivered AI-prompted answers to the visitors’ questions in real time, framed by poetical, musical, and theatrical structures. In Searle’s Chinese room, goal-oriented computational mechanisms remain detached from understanding during the linguistic operation. In our Delphic room, understanding is key for carrying out the aesthetic operations intended to artistically stimulate a coupling of intellectual and visceral information processing in open-ended and personal ways.

  • Gestalt
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many disciplines have the culture and nurturing to explore, create, and tell stories about worlds. Therefore, our contribution is about the re-discovery of an idea that has been crucial in occidental thinking and which became underestimated: the notion of gestalt. To conceive real-world (and other) phenomena in terms of gestalt helps to gain a holistic understanding of them, and the aim of our paper therefore is to promote a method to rediscover the world in a less analytical fashion than it has been done in the last 400 years, after an analytical-based perception of reality gained ground with the scientific method developed in the 17th century and later. At the same time, a gestalt-approach helps to reframe (and better understand) recent technological developments as outcomes of an analytical way of thinking. Because analysis and the shaping of processes and entities according to functionalities is not the only or most suitable way to generate understanding, despite we got used to such a general state of mind. To conceive the world primarily in analytical terms or as a set of functions became culturally accepted. A gestalt-approach can be a promising complement to the prevalent analytical approaches, and the general benefit of such an approach lies in the use of comparative methods to create knowledge or design processes. Also borrowing ideas from Design Theory where Gestalt is analogous to a design process, we can view it as a process of knowledge acquisition and learning from the previously unknown. Gestalt perception as well as -conception helps to develop another kind of epistemology than the prevalent analytical/functional one, as for instance cybernetics, system theories and bioengineering already demonstrated. It transcends the border between real and virtual towards envisioning a complete reality, and out of that proves to be a method of working with unknown phenomena.

  • Tron, ordet och nådegåvorna : en studie av Livets Ord i Tjeckien
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis Word of Life (Slovo zivota) in the Czech Republic is studied from a sociological perspective with a special focus on the Swedish influence, especially the teachings of Ulf Ekman, on the Czech Word of Life-congregations. Another purpose is to examine if there also is space for domestic interpretations of the theology of the faith-movement and if there is any integration with Czech religious tradition. The study also poses the question if the Czech Word of Life-congregations stress the prosperity-theology and the importance of the spiritual gifts of grace. A parallel question is thus to find out if there has been any conflicts between Slovo zivota and other religious bodies or the society in the Czech Republic as has been apparent regarding Livets Ord in Sweden. The subjects in this thesis are discussed with the help of sociological theory, including the concept of charisma and church-sect typologies as well as textual analysis and field research. The study shows that even though the teachings of Ulf Ekman is still important within the Word of Life-congregations in the Czech Republic, the domestic religious traditions, mostly in the form of Husitism, are apparent. Other prominent features of these congregations are a strong focus on faith healing but also on religious tolerance together with an interest in ecumenical work with other churches and denominations in the country. The signs of striving for independence from Swedish influence are visible in the fact that the Czech Word of Life-congregations are forming a domestic variation of faith-theology where the national religious traditions are integrated with the theology usually connected with the faith-movement.
