- Mindfulness har snabbt ökat i popularitet de senaste åren, mycket tack vare den legitimitet som internationell forskning om arbetssättet bidragit till. I Sverige har mindfulness kommit att få stort genomslag i vården i form av olika behandlingsmetoder. I den tvärvetenskapliga Mindfulness – tradition, tolkning och tillämpning lägger författarna humanistiska, samhällsvetenskapliga och beteendevetenskapliga perspektiv på mindfulness. De gör nedslag även bland praktiserande buddhister, psykologer och mindfulnessinstruktörer och stimulerar till befruktande samtal mellan akademi och fältet där mindfulness lärs ut. För första gången samlas forskare för att ge nya infallsvinklar på hur idéerna omtalas och synliggörs, och hur detta påverkar vår uppfattning om vad mindfulness ”är”. Antologins kritiska reflektioner syftar till att nyansera den populära bilden av mindfulness som enbart ”medveten närvaro”.

- On a mountain hill outside Fredrika, a small village in the rural north of Sweden, a standing Buddha statue and the seated statue of Luang Pho Thuat invoke reverence from visiting Buddhists. The plans of a large-scale temple and meditation centre have also invoked hope of religious tourism and economic growth in an area highly affected by depopulation. The Temple Mount, as it is referred to locally, has, on the one hand, become a source of religious power, not only for Thai Buddhist pilgrims, but also for other religious networks that has established themselves in the area. On the other hand, Fredrika has also become a contested religious space. The article discusses the background of the Temple Mount as well as contrasting examples of usual establishment patterns of Thai Buddhist temples in Sweden, highlighting translocal religious activity at Fredrika, showing how diaspora Thai Buddhism becomes intertwined with other religious networks.

Making Death Matter : A Feminist Technoscience Study of Alzheimer's Sciences in the Laboratory

- This thesis is a contribution to feminist laboratory studies and a critical engagement with the natural sciences, or more precisely research on the biochemical workings and deadly relations of Alzheimer’s disease emanating from a year of field work in a Drosophila fly lab. The natural sciences have been a point of fascination within the field of gender studies for decades. Such sciences produce knowledge on what gets to count as nature and natural, healthy or sick, normal or not, and they have done it with great societal authority and impact throughout European modernity. However, feminist technoscience scholars argue that science and knowledge is socially produced, and political too. Concepts such as nature, animal, human, body, sex, and life itself are not simply given natural realities but phenomena processed through the naturecultures of the laboratory. Situated within such theoretical and methodological approaches, this thesis wonders how scientific facts about Alzheimer’s disease are made in the lab today. What kinds of realities, bodies and ethico-political concerns are enacted? Who gets to live and who gets to die in everyday laboratory practices? Theoretically, the thesis is grounded, particularly, within Karen Barad’s agential realism and posthumanist performativity, and as such it accounts for human and nonhuman entanglements through which AD is performed in the lab in relational ways. In other words, the thesis explores how AD is enacted in the bodies of transgenic fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), as these flies embody the disease, live and die with it. Last but not least, the thesis explores the materialities of death, dying, embodiment and biological waste in a biochemistry lab as constitutive parts of the produced knowledge about AD.

Insikt och närvaro : Akademiska kontemplationer kring buddhism, meditation och mindfulness i Sverige

- Under 1900-talet har stora förändringar skett i synen på buddhistisk meditation. Från att ha varit en övning som bara ägt rum på kloster och bland ett fåtal munkar, har både ordinerade lärare och lekmannalärare börjat lära ut meditation till lekfolk. Meditation har kommit att framställas som själva hjärtat i buddhistiska traditioner, och som det element som kan isoleras och tas ur sitt religiösa sammanhang för att sedan läras ut i en sekulär inramning. Därigenom har meditation kommit att bli det enskilt viktigaste bidraget från buddhistiska traditioner till de nya former av andlighet och religiositet som den svenska majoritetsbefolkningen kommer i kontakt med. Praktiken återfinns även i de terapiformer som numera erbjuds inom svensk sjukvård, där mindfulness-baserade terapier snabbt har ökat i popularitet de senaste åren. Syftet med avhandlingen Insikt och närvaro är att undersöka på vilket sätt en religiös tradition förändras när den överförs till en ny kontext; hur den emottas och införlivas i sin nya kontext samt hur enskilda individer i Sverige uppfattar och använder sig av denna tradition. Det görs genom att belysa utvecklingen av insiktsmeditation, vipassana, som också är känt som satipatthana. I fokus står det meditativa arvet från den burmesiske lekmannaläraren U Ba Khin, en meditationsmetod som har blivit globaliserad framför allt genom hans indiske elev S. N. Goenka. Denna specifika burmesiska meditationsmetod kan även spåras i flera av de sekulära mindfulnessbaserade terapier som används i terapeutiska och medicinska sammanhang. Förutom att bidra till förståelsen av och för nya buddhistiska rörelseer, buddhistisk meditation och religionsbyten i det nutida svenska samhället, vill studien medverka till en fördjupad kritisk diskussion kring mindfulness. Som sådan kan den även tjäna som reflektionsunderlag för psykologer och andra som är verksamma inom den medicinska sektorn där mindfulness börjat introducerats inom svensk sjukvård.

- ‘Zoo-ethics’is a subset of bioethics,and zoology may be looked upon as a subset of ecology...that is how the review of Survival at Stake, by Poorva Joshipura, falls well and truly within the scope of this journal.There is also an interesting link between this one and another review of a book steeped in science, published recently by this author. Survival at Stake, on the other hand, primarily, has a moral, ethical, and practical force embedded within the scientific. This is understandable when one notes that Joshipura is an animal welfare activist associated with the NGO, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and committed to the cause espoused by it.

- The aim of this thesis is to clarify the social mechanisms that affect people'srelationships with the Church of Sweden. Interest is primarily focused on the majorityof the Swedish population who belong to the Church of Sweden, but who rarely makeuse of its services. This aim is accomplished in two ways. Firstly through a study ofthe ways in which church members understand and evaluate their relationships to thechurch and the services provided by the church, which they have made use of.Secondly through applying and testing service theoretical concepts in the churchcontext, and relating this to sociological theory of religion. This is discussed on threelevels. On a societal macro level changes in religion are discussed as part of thegeneral changes from agricultural via industrial to a service society. On anorganisational mezzo level the Church of Sweden is analysed as a service-providingorganisation. The micro level is analysed through a qualitative interview study with29 strategically chosen individuals.The theoretical analysis and empirical results show that the relationship betweenindividuals and the Church of Sweden can be interpreted as a lifelong servicerelationship. The individual uses the services of the church on few, but from theperspective of the individual's lifetime, meaningful occasions. The perceived qualityin these service meetings interacts with the perceived quality in the lifelongrelationship with the church. Even the church relationship itself can be understood asa value creating service through the fact that it mediates relationships to collective andtranscendental values and thereby provides security and a sense of coherence.

- EU-regulation stipulates that all EU-passports should contain twofingerprints of the bearer embedded in an RFID-chip in the cover of the passport. The Netherlands, however, takes fourfingerprints, and next to embedding them in an RDIF-chip in the cover of a passport they are stored in one centralised database which is directly accessible for law enforcement and security services.A number of general cases voicing complaints about the mandatory storage of four fingerprints in a centralised database have been filed at lower courts, none of which have been declared admissible up to now. Next to that several cases of people refusing to give fingerprints are in courts at the moment.In my presentation I will give an overview of both the EU- and Dutch-legislation and elaborate on the different cases in court at the moment.
