  • Does eBird Contribute to Environmental Citizenship? A Discursive Analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sea, Sky, Land, Endangered Ecologies, Solidarities. Society for the Social Study of Science, 4S 2023, Honolulu, November 8-11, 2023.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Environmental citizen science projects could play a role in fomenting environmental citizenship. Yet, the extent to which existing environmental citizen science projects contribute to environmental citizenship remains unexplored. Therefore, we apply a discursive analysis to one of the largest environmental citizen science projects in the world, eBird, to assess how its 'institutional technologies' contribute to the formulation of specific social roles (e.g., user, eBirder) and environmental objects (e.g., species, hotspots, checklists). From this analysis, we discuss how these social roles and objects relate to the concept of environmental citizenship. Specifically, we show that eBird strengthens an "eBirder" community but maintains separations between researchers and ebirders; encourages attachment to birds but primarily through identification and competition; and connects eBirders to some key environmental issues but not others. We demonstrate that eBird discourse contributes to defining what rights and duties exist for eBirders as well as to which kind of environment eBirders gain citizenship.

  • Greenhouse Superstructures as Social Pedestals : displaying site-specific non-locality as a possible form of resilience
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Architecture and Resilience on the Human Scale. - Sheffield, UK : University of Sheffield. ; , s. 70-71
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper I will propose that greenhouse superstructures are not just the surface envelop of an industrial typology: they are more so a spatial archetype. As such, they are historiographical boundary objects that at times display the spatiotemporal dimensions and geopolitical flows of environmental form in accelerated climate change. This abovementioned hypothesis is reflected through the manifold of “resilience” as defined by Prof. Lawrence Vale - of resilience being “a window into conflicting human values”. The aim of this effort is to ultimately centre the manifold notion of “greenhouse” as an index that points away from itself towards the impact of anthropological and technocratic ideologies on agricultural and spatial production. It is these binary ideologies that arguably create what we sense to be a crisis of scale, now further articulated as the hyperobject of climate change as a disjuncture that we nostalgically entertain as a chasm between the human condition and the living environment. Parsed by augmenting the notion of 'greenhouse superstructure' – as technology, gas, and effect – the hypothesis looks to articulate the greenhouse as a 'site-specific non-local' sensation on the expanding sculptural field. What this expanding sculptural netherworld implies needs to be rigorously addressed for it may very well become what tautologically heightens the greenhouse to the providence of becoming our future atmosphere and landscape. To elaborate this potentiality, I will first present the schematics and precedents of the dissertation, including four installations of my authorship in Germany, Brazil, and Sweden. These sections then lead to an argument instantiated by thinking of the greenhouse as 'social pedestal'. The objective is therefore to embody the notion of non-local site-specific resilience as modes of pedagogy and production that aspire to destabilise the anthropological machine, as resilient modes not limited to historic, scientific, artistic, correlational, nor speculative conventions.

  • Culinary Contructions : Food, Otherness and National Identity in French and French-language Cinemas
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ninth International Conference on Food Studies. - : National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper analyses how national identity and Othering are constructed through representations of food in French and French-language films. I focus on the French context, for if there have been a number of studies of films depicting the experiences of migrant communities in France and the confrontations between migrant communities and the "host" French communities (Sherzer, 1996; Dubois, 2016; Higbee, 2013; Berghahn, 2013; Asava, 2017), few delve into the representations of food and culinary practices in much detail. The questions raised in this paper may however be applied to other national contexts. To demonstrate how images and discourses related to cooking and eating are employed to convey specific representations of national identity and foreignness, I analyse four films made in the first decades of the twenty-first century (The Secret of the Grain, 2007, Abdellatif Kechiche; Cuire ensemble, 2014, François Pirotte and Foued Bellali; Serial (Bad) Weddings, 2014, Philippe de Chauveron; Tazzeka, 2017, Jean-Philippe Gaud). In these films food comes across as a marker of difference and/or sameness, and as a key element in the construction of national identity. The paper also investigates how these questions of food and national identity are further problematised by factors such as the migrant crisis in Europe and the existence of "postmigratory" generations (Kleppinger and Reeck, 2018) in France who consider themselves French as well as possessing multiple cultural identities.

  • Samförfattande som datadriven tvärvetenskap: Pragmatiska lärdomar från SweTerror-projektet
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Huminfra Conference (HiC 2024), 10-11 January, 2024, Gothenburg, Sweden. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 1650-3686 .- 1650-3740. - 9789180755122
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Half-Naked yet Empowered? : Spartacus (2010-) (Ancient) Gender Equality in Contemporary Television
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 12th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Social Sciences. - Honolulu Hawaii.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spartacus is attested in several ancient sources (Plutarch, Appian, and Florus) as the leader of a rebellion against the Roman Republic (73 to 71 BC). Despite that none of Spartacus' historical representations overtly suggest that he aimed at reforming Roman society by abolishing slavery and promoting equality, he has inspired a number of intellectuals across times and cultures as a egalitarian leader. Marx, in the Manchester letter to Engels (1861), considered him a real representative of the ancient 'proletariat’ and members of the German Spartacus League, a forerunner of the Communist Party of Germany. In contemporary popular culture, the most recent reception of the tale of Spartacus is the US Television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (premiered on Starz in: 2010- followed by a late prequel and a sequel), where he is also portrayed as a just and egalitarian leader. In this paper, I will discuss how Spartacus (2010-) promotes social and gender equality as an ancient virtue within a contemporary context. Unlike Spartacus’ historical and other cinematic representations, women play a major role in the 2010- TV series either as slaves that join the rebellion, inspired by the egalitarian Thracian slave-leader, or wealthy Romans who oppose him. Despite incidental nudity, scenes of a sexual and violent nature, a TV MA rating for graphic violence, and strong sexual content in overexposed video stylization, I will show that female characters evolve from the older sexualized and objectified females of gladiatorial Sword and Sandals (e.g. Warrior and the Slave Girl: 1958) to strong and brave action heroines. Finally, I will discuss how the 2010- TV series reflects upon the impact of equality and feminism in the portrayal of the ancient world in our contemporary popular culture.

  • On the impact of technology and globalisation on reproductive ethics
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 10th World Congress of Bioethics, July 28-31, 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ethics, mores, and policies in the field of reproduction and parenting have an impact on how, by whom, and for whom reproductive technologies are developed, used, desired or recommended. In return, changes in societies, caused by globalisation and the spread of technologies into the process of formation of families (as well as other elements, depending on the case), have led to what some call the "crisis" of the family. I propose to look into this interaction between technology, globalisation, ethics, mores and policies, and to point to some of the ways in which they have influenced each other, and in particular to some of the ways in which technologies (such as gamete donation, embryo transfer, SCNT, the creation of synthetic gametes etc.) demand the reformulation of arguments in reproductive ethics and policy (such as the potentiality argument, regulations according to which birth mothers receive legal recognition as mothers of the newly born etc.). One of the main questions that arises from these changes is that of the identity of children's "real" parents. I will make an argument from reproductive autonomy to support the notion of "moral" parenting to the detriment of the praising of genetic or birth links. The shift from moral parenting being prima facie associated with genetic lineage, gestation or birth, to the need to reanalyse parenting entitlements is the exclusive merit (or fault) of reproductive technologies. Certainly, parenting entitlements have sometimes been reorganised before that (e.g. in adoption or custody decisions), but without significant effects on the general status quo. And, as the attribution of parenting entitlements and obligations is shifting, so will the ethics and policy of access to, and development of, reproductive technologies (e.g. if we cease to see genetics as the main component, or source of legitimacy, of reproduction and parenting, then this has an effect on the ethics and regulation of the use of donor gametes as well as public funding of, or even access to, the use of technologies for people who cannot reproduce genetically but could become parents in other ways). Reproductive technologies thus also create a wider separation between the right to reproduce and the right to parent, if indeed both can be argued for.
