  • Introduction to the DHQ Special Issue: Digital Technology in the Study of the Past
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Digital Humanities Quarterly. - 1938-4122. ; 12:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital technology is transforming the assemblage and dissemination of historical information. Museums, libraries, archives, and universities increasingly modify their digital research infrastructures in order to make data open and available. The imminent assessment and representation of historical data has admittedly challenged the boundaries of historical knowledge and generated new research questions. The process of reconstructing, visualizing and rendering historical data has equally developed together with technology. This is the case in both academic and heritage contexts and in less immediatedly obvious popular uses, such as the increasingly significant presence and use of history within videogames. Regardless of specific context, as this collection of articles shows, the process of digitally capturing and representing historical data is often analogous to and determined by the digital platform used.

  • Unraveling the logics of landscape
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Despite conceptual oscillations through times, the concept of landscape remains highly subjective, whereupon unraveling its 'logics' opens up to a plurality of interpretations. Accordingly, by focusing on the interconnections present in the non-haphazard production of landscape, this publication elaborates on how the rural landscape is valued, monitored, changed, harbored, used and misused, be it through actions, representations or metaphors. This book covers a broad range of topics, with contributions from scholars from more than 30 countries.

  • The Industrial Ecology of the Göteborg City Region — a first appraisal
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Society for Industrial Ecology 2015.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An infrastructure system – here, the industrial ecology of Gothenburg — is more important for society than we usually credit it for (cf. Technology is society made durable, Latour 1990) and is taken for granted by most inhabitants. Gothenburg is an unusually well-developed and interconnected infrastructure system. The first district heating facility was put in operation in 1952. Soon enough, waste was re-used and recycled into energy, into both electricity and heat. With time, more varied materials and sources became integrated into the system to also produce biogas and compost. The project makes a historiographic description of how the industrial ecology of the Gothenburg city region developed since the Gothenburg technical environmental flow system is unique in size, age, diversity of flows and functions. The study describes environmental flows and their actors in a networked organization. The focus on interconnectivity of the different actors, flows and sectors of Gothenburg requires the combination of several theoretical fields. Such theoretical fields include Networked Learning, which takes a relational stance in which learning takes place both in relation to others, and in relation to learning resources (Dirckinck-Homfeld et al., 2009); STS (Science Technology and Society), which study how technical innovation are affected by social, political and cultural values, and how these innovation affect, in turn, political, social and cultural values; (Joerges & Novotny, 2003); and Urban Metabolism, which uses models to facilitate the description and analysis of the flows of the energy and materials within cities, such as Material Flow Analysis of a city, and provides a metaphorical framework to study the interactions of natural and human systems in specific regions. Preliminary findings will be presented.

  • One, two, three, many! or…? Mapping of the controversy over the Swedish West Coast shrimp
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 22nd International Sustainable Development Research Society Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 'Controversy mapping' can provide insights about issues related to actors, their networking, and governance where the interpretation of science is at stake. In turn, these insights can be useful for advocacy processes and collective problem-solving. In order to illustrate this statement a case study was conducted for the North Sea prawn (Pandalus borealis) in the West Coast of Sweden which was the main subject of a controversy that started in 2014 and ended in October 2015 with a Marine Stewardship Council labeling for the contested prawn. We used a method from the scientific humanities, 'controversy mapping', following the methodology suggested by Venturini (2010) and Latour (2012). The method enabled us to trace statements, literatures, and actors involved in the shrimp controversy. By assembling these elements over time, we were able to describe the process of the controversy and identify the networks that 'wrestled' over the scientific interpretation of the (same) data on shrimp population size along the Swedish West Coast. By using network visualisation and analysis software, the case study shows the extension of the network of actors that were part of the controversy, their roles, influence, perspectives and relationships. The material gathered on the controversy was subsequently analysed from the perspective of the production and consumption system of the shrimp. It shows how advocacy actors build alliances with selected product chain actors in order to gather momentum for change. Based on the findings from this research it is possible to suggest that controversy study can help the product chain actors understand their production and consumption system better and provide a basis for product chain roundtables for conflict resolution and problem solving. • The making of a professional digital caregiver : personalisation and friendliness as practices of humanisation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Medical Humanities. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 1468-215X .- 1473-4265. ; 48:3, s. 347-356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to explore how a digital caregiver, developed within a Swedish interdisciplinary research project, is humanised through health-enhancing practices of personalisation and friendliness. The digital caregiver is developed for being used in older patients’ homes to enhance their health. The paper explores how the participants (researchers and user study participants) of the research project navigate through the humanisation of technology in relation to practices of personalisation and friendliness. The participants were involved in a balancing act between making the digital caregiver person-like and friend-like enough to ensure the health of the patient. Simultaneously, trying to make the patients feel like as if they were interacting with someone rather than something – while at the same time not making the digital caregiver seem like a real person or a real friend. This illustrates the participants’ discursive negotiations of the degree of humanisation the digital caregiver needs in order to promote the health of the patient. A discursive conflict was identified between a patient discourse of self-determination versus a healthcare professional discourse of authority and medical responsibility: whether the digital caregiver should follow the patient’s health-related preferences or follow the healthcare professionals’ health rules. Hence, a possible conflict between the patient and the digital caregiver might arise due to different understandings of friendliness and health; between friendliness (humanisation) as a health-enhancing practice governed by the patient or by the healthcare professionals (healthcare professionalism).

    • Abstract in UndeterminedThe medical technology (medtech) industry in Sweden is situated withina complex innovation ecosystem, in which various stakeholders from the public, private and academic sectors need to collaborate to meet demands on effective andeffi cient healthcare. Demographics are changing and those in need of healthcare arenot only larger in numbers than ever but they are also more knowledgeable anddemanding. Increasing innovative performance is crucial in both the private andpublic healthcare sectors, but bold steps forward need to be taken in light of stricterrules and regulations for how healthcare stakeholders should manage both theirinternal processes and the ways in which they interact with other stakeholders in thelarger innovation system. The traditional way in which medtech companies gainaccess to user needs, primarily working through a sales–purchasing relationshipwith the public healthcare sector, is outdated and needs to be replaced with anincreasingly collaborative and cocreative model of healthcare innovation. This chapter describes experiences and lessons learned from InnoPlant, a 3-year(2008–2011) action learning project involving three companies from the Swedishmedtech industry, two county/regional councils responsible for public healthcare, and four academic institutions—carried out within the framework of the SwedishProduct Innovation Engineering program (PIEp). The purpose of the project was toadvance the capability of stakeholders from the public, private, and academic sectorsto collaborate in the cocreation of healthcare innovations.
