  • Materlialiserade sexualiteter : om hur normer framträder, förhandlas och ges hållbarhet
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how conceptions of sexuality are interlinked with and formed through connections with different types of matter, and also to study what significance matter (that is, bodies, space and things) has in shaping and actuating norms, particularly heteronorms. The study is based on transcribed semi-structured interviews and go-along interviews with persons who deviate from the societal norm of man and the societal norm heterosexual. In addition, the material consists of signposts, spaces, architecture, legal documents and texts found on websites. The dissertation is mainly dedicated to the study of processes wherein bodies, things and space are linked together or separated. Bodies materialise as non-heterosexual (or heterosexual) in processes that entangle movements, spaces, things and language. Apart from analysing bodies as morphous, I also emphasise that the boundaries between bodies and things must be understood as transient. Things can integrate into bodies and limbs can turn into things. I also cast light on the fact that heteronorms are imprinted into matter such as the built environment. Boundaries are materialised, but LGBTQ- defined safe spaces are concurrently being formed. Such spaces tend to be transient in character. This stands in contrast to such things that tie into societal norms, which tend to survive the passing of time whether they be buildings, monuments or urban planning. Thus, norms are both created by and imprinted into matter. The memories, experiences and assumed needs of certain bodies and their ways of living together are given solidity. Spatially organised differences are, on the other hand, primarily accepted when packaged into events, temporary and clearly marked, which inadvertently highlight Sweden’s (imaginary) openness and diversity.

  • Dressed in a Present from the Past : The Transfers and Transformations of a Swedish Bridal Crown in the United States
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Culture Unbound. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 2000-1525. ; 2, s. 695-717
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ever since the emigration from the Nordic countries the Old world and the New world have maintained an exchange of ideas, customs, and material culture. This cultural heritage consists of more than remnants of the past. Drawing on theories of material culture and performance this article highlights the role of gifts in mate-rializing relationships between individuals, families and organizations in the wake of migration. First, I build on a suggested coinage of the term heritage gifts as a way of materializing relationships. Thereafter, I map out the numerous roles which a Swedish bridal crown play in the United States: as museum object, object of display and loaned to families for wedding ceremonies in America. The trans-fers and transformations of the bridal crown enhances a drama of a migration her-itage. This dynamic drama brings together kin in Sweden and America and maps specific locations into a flexible space via the trajectory of crown-clad female bodies.

  • Crafting Cultural Heritage
  • 2016
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The making of artefacts is a core activity in society, the result of which contributes to the building up of our physical surroundings and material culture. Throughout history, craft skills have been highly appreciated and have often been seen as crucial component of a capable human. Despite this, the knowledge base that constitutes the actual making is often overlooked in research. What can we learn about things by learning about their making? How do different craft skills offer an understanding of its historical use? How can theoretical and methodological approaches be developed concerning the actual making? How can we study and understand craft as cultural heritage? This book contains a selecion of papers from the session Crafting Cultural Heritage at the Assosiation of Critical Heritage studies inaugural conference Re/theorising Heritage 2012 in Gothenburg. The contributors are Anneli Palmsköld; Thomas Laurien; Eleonora Lupo and Elena Giunta; Gunnar Almevik and Nicola Donovan. Their common interest are theories and methods of crafting that could benefit heritage studies approach to making.

  • Handicrafting Gender : Craft, Performativity and Cultural Heritage
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Gender and Heritage. - London : Routledge. - 9781138208148 - 9781138208162 ; , s. 44-60
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To write the history of craft and heritage engages with constructing a canon of known practices parallel to deconstructing the differences incorporated in institutions dealing with craft. Craft objects have long since been considered as heritage, but craft is also recognized as ’intangible heritage’. This can be seen in UNESCO’s (2008) designation of ’traditional craftmanship’ as a part of global intangible heritage. However, craft's gendered character is not equally recognized. In this article we will discuss craft, heritage and gender from a performativity perspective on making. The main question is how gender patterns are reflected in the understanding of craft, and in heritage making. The aim is to make visible the gender demarcations in the making of craft. We argue that the making of craft and its heritage status has been highly charged with gender differences. Recognizing this is of importance to be able to understand and to challenge heritage making processes and canons when it comes to craft. After a short theoretical background focusing on performativity and the canon of gender differences, three empirical examples are outlined. The first is about organizational aspects of handicraft, the second concerning the technique of crocheting, and the third considering visual representations of crafting, using empirical archival and published materials from the Home Craft Movement in Sweden.

  • Konsthantverk i Sverige, del 1
  • 2015
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Konsthantverk i Sverige del 1 samlar 18 författare.

  • Performing a Present from the Past : The Värmland Heritage Gift, Materialized Emotions and Cultural Connectivity
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea. - : Berghahn Books. - 0425-4597 .- 1604-3030. ; 40:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on actor-network theory and theories of performance, this article discusses gift-giving as an expansive form of materializing relationships and delimiting boundaries between nations, regions, organizations and individuals in the wake of migration. Initially, I discuss gift-giving as a way of materializing relationships and building networks. Thereafter, I map out the social life of the Värmland Gift to America, a collection donated by the Värmland province in Sweden to the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis in 1952. I suggest the coinage of heritage gift as a term to describe gifts with dense biographies which contain and enact multiple performances that simultaneously create and recreate the idea of gift-giving in its role as an activity that binds people together. The analysis of the Värmland Gift shows how such a heritage gift kept on the move over time involves not one but a series of performances which have fostered dynamic transatlantic relationships for over fifty years.

  • Ätbara andra
  • 2017
