- This article argues that holistic ecocentrism unnecessarily introduces elements to explain why we ought to halt biodiversity loss. I suggest that atomistic accounts can justify the same conclusion by utilising fewer elements. Hence, why we ought to preserve biodiversity can be made reasonable without adding elements such as intrinsic values of ecosystems or moral obligations to conserve collectives of organisms. Between two equally good explanations of the same phenomenon, the explanation utilising fewer elements, which speaks in favour of atomistic accounts, will be the better one.

- Objectives: Assessment of ethical aspects of a technology is an important component of health technology assessment (HTA). Nevertheless, how the implementation of ethical assessment in HTA is to be organized and adapted to specific regulatory and organizational settings remains unclear. The objective of this study is to present a framework for systematic identification of ethical aspects of health technologies. Furthermore, the process of developing and adapting the framework to a specific setting is described. Methods: The framework was developed based on an inventory of existing approaches to identification and assessment of ethical aspects in HTA. In addition, the framework was adapted to the Swedish legal and organizational healthcare context, to the role of the HTA agency and to the use of non-ethicists. The framework was reviewed by a group of ethicists working in the field as well as by a wider set of interested parties including industry, interest groups, and other potential users. Results: The framework consists of twelve items with sub-questions, short explanations, and a concluding overall summary. The items are organized into four different themes: the effects of the intervention on health, its compatibility with ethical norms, structural factors with ethical implications, and long term ethical consequences of using the intervention. Conclusions: In this study, a framework for identifying ethical aspects of health technologies is proposed. The general considerations and methodological approach to this venture will hopefully inspire and present important insights to organizations in other national contexts interested in making similar adaptations.

Interventions in Foster Family Care: A Systematic Review

- Objective: Foster family care is associated with adverse short- and long-term consequences for the child. A systematic review was conducted on interventions for foster children and foster careers. Method: A comprehensive search process was used to find eligible interventions evaluated in randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies. The quality of studies was assessed with GRADE, and effects were synthesized using meta-analytic methods. Results: In all, 28 publications of 18 interventions, including 5,357 children, were identified. Only three specific interventions had sufficient confidence of evidence. No study had examined tools for foster parent selection nor had evaluated preservice programs related to outcomes. Discussion: These analyses provide new insights and hope into the field of systematic interventions in foster care. The overall results indicate that it is possible to improve eight outcomes but cannot point out which programs are superior. Ethically, social care organizations should systematically collect knowledge about effects and side effects.

- In this article, I conceptualize defensive playing in table tennis by analyzing it from the viewpoint of affective philosophy (Deleuze and Guattari, 1986, 1987). The spatial and emotional aspects of the atmosphere of such play are investigated through an autoethnography of company table tennis. By using my ownbody as an "instrument of research" (Longhurst et al., 2008), I practically evoke and feed on the tension between modern competitive sport and "sport for all" (Eichberg, 2010). It is suggested that the defensive stance in table tennis might be seen as a trajectory toward a "minor sport" (Deleuze and Guattari, 1986, 1987), i.e. as a mild resistance to the competitive ethos of sport. Signifying Supersession : Christian Seder "How-To" Guides, Affordances, and Rhetorics of Authenticity

- The rapidly growing popularity of Christian Seders in recent years has been accompanied by the equally rapid emergence of a genre of “how-to” guides that tell celebrants, among other things, how to structure their evenings – what to do and when – and how Jesus is supposed to be understood to have fulfilled the hopes and promises embedded in the Seder and Haggadah. This paper positions the genre as a social phenomenon tied to a process of authentication, through which Christian Seders are simultaneously re-positioned as a form of authentically Christian practice and legitimized as such over and against ongoing critiques that the practice is an appropriative and supersessionist one. The paper maps and discusses recurring elements in the guides and analyzes their shared symbols, ideas, and objects to highlight the major constituent parts of supersessionist rhetorics of authenticity about Christian Seder practices. Using a critical form of social semiotics, the analysis highlights how guide-authors navigate both the modal affordances of traditionally Jewish practice and narrative and an historically Christian epistemological framework in their commitment to suturing them into a newly-fabricated and artificially-aged whole. This suturing is an appropriative process that often requires overexplicit Christian or Christianizing anchoring of core semiotic resources for Christian Seders to be legitimized. As historically conceived, neither Seders nor, for example, the conception of Jesus as the Paschal lamb or as Jewish, allow for easy cross-cultural translation; both modalities need to be actively shaped for any claim that they are related to be made. This shift, or suturing, may entail linking the New Testament last supper to the Passover meal or convincing readers how an element of the Seder should be understood to symbolize something Christian, often Easter-related. This is neither a neutral nor self-evident reframing of the Seder; how-to guides allow socially situated, often but not exclusively white US American Evangelical Protestants, to name and claim a Jewish practice as their own in a dual sense: on the one hand, they demonstrate the practice for newcomers and, on the other, justify, legitimize, and mark it as authentic.

- This book examines the role of ethics and philosophy in biodiversity conservation.The objective of this book is two-fold: on the one hand it offers a detailed and systematic account of central normative concepts often used, but rarely explicated nor justified, within conservation biology. Such concepts include ‘values’ (both intrinsic, instrumental, and, more recently, relational), ‘rights’, and ‘duties’. The second objective is to emphasize to environmental philosophers and applied ethicists the many interesting decision-making challenges of biodiversity conservation. The book argues that a nuanced account of instrumental values provides a powerful tool for reasoning about the values of biodiversity. It also scrutinizes relational values, the concept of rights of nature, and risk, and show how moral philosophy proves indispensable for these concepts. Consequently, it engages with recent suggestions on normative aspects of biodiversity conservation, and show the need for moral philosophy in biodiversity conservation. The overriding aim of this book is to provide conservation biologists and policy-makers with a systematic overview of concepts and assessments of the reasons for reaching prescriptive conclusions about biodiversity conservation. This will prove instrumental in clarifying the role of applied ethics and a refined understanding of the tools it can provide.This title will be of interest to students and scholars of conservation biology, conservation policy, environmental ethics and environmental philosophy.

- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a widely spread diagnosis.The dominant paradigm of ADHD is biomedical where ADHD isdefined as a brain disorder. At the same time, the legitimacy of thediagnosis is being questioned since it is unclear whether or not ADHDcan be deemed a medical disorder in itself. The aim of this article is tocritically assess the merits of understanding the diagnosis of ADHD as amedical condition defined as a brain disorder. This is being done usingthe seventeenth century philosopher Benedict Spinoza’s (1632–1677)notions of adequate and inadequate knowledge and his counterintuitivetheory of mental health. Doing so it becomes clear that ADHD, howeveradequate it may seem, is founded on inadequate knowledge and thatthe legitimacy of the individual diagnosis should therefore be questionedon the grounds that on a long term scale it is passivizing andstigmatizing rather that liberating.
