  • Sweden, Japan and the Long Second World War : 1931-1945
  • 2021
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lottaz and Ottosson explore the intricate relationship between neutral Sweden and Imperial Japan during the latter’s 15 years of warfare in Asia and in the Pacific. While Sweden’s relationship with European Axis powers took place under the premise of existential security concerns, the case of Japan was altogether different. Japan never was a threat to Sweden, militarily or economically. Nevertheless, Stockholm maintained a close relationship with Tokyo until Japan’s surrender in 1945. This book explores the reasons for that and therefore provides a study on the rationale and the value of neutrality in the Long Second World War. Sweden, Japan, and the Long Second World War is a valuable resource for scholars of the Second World War and of the history of neutrality.

  • Salinity dynamics in the Baltic Sea linked to anthropogenic foraging behavior during the Holocene : S03-03
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • S03-03 Salinity dynamics in the Baltic Sea linked to anthropogenic foraging behavior during the Holocene Nils-Olof Svensson1 1 Department of Science and Mathematics, Kristianstad University, 291 88 Kristianstad, Sweden Email: nils-olof.svensson@hkr.se   Former Lake Vesan is situated in the province of Blekinge in South Sweden. Before drainage and cultivation in 1927 forming a shallow lake surrounded by Phragmites reeds and connected to the Baltic Sea through a c. 3 km long outlet river. This region has a well studied sea-level history showing that here global sea-level change since the last glacial is surprisingly well balanced by the glacioisostatic uplift. The result is that the studied basin for the last 10 000 years repeatedly shifted between being a lake or a bay of the Baltic. For most of this time it´s shores were important for fishing and hunting as well as for dwelling places. Later also activities like farming and burials left their traces. In this archeologically unusually rich environment it was decided to build a highway initiating extensive archaeological and paleoecological studies of which this study is a part. In the project my role is to study a more than 5 m long sediment core for microfossils and physical parameters to reveal the environmental history of the basin and its surroundings. Pollen and algae are the primary subjects here and analysis is still ongoing. Diatoms give information both on nutrient levels and salinity in the water, important both for revealing local sea-level history and productivity. This information may allow discussing changes in abundance and species composition of the limnic and marine fauna foraged by man. The sediments from early Holocene are unfortunately missing due to a hiatus. This is related to the wave action during the early part of the transgressive Ancylus stage. The younger sediments shows initially rather low but gradually increasing organic content, interpreted as low organic production during later part of the Ancylus Lake stage, and then increasing productivity as salinity in the Baltic increased due to the sea level rise in the areas of the Baltic Sea inlets. Further up in the sediments a color change and increase in organic content coincides with major changes in the algae flora, the green algae Pediastrum decreases at the same time as dinoflagellate resting spores becomes frequent. The diatom flora also changes distinctly, indicating higher salinity. The horizon is radiocarbon dated to 5900 BC (7900 BP) and coincides in time rather well with the shift to the fully marine part of the Littorina Sea stage.

  • Assessing sensory properties of the early modern medicine “Elixir amarum Hiaernei”
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction We are reworking the early modern medicine with focus on products, today known as Swedish Bitters or similar names, and historically as “Elixir amarum Hiaernei”. The history of the recipe dates back at least to mid-18th century. It was probably one of the Hiaerne-brothers, Ulrik Leonhard (1712-1758) or Christian Henric (1709-1794), who invented this universal medication. From a number of Linnaeus sources from later 18th century it is well known that odor, flavor and taste were used to assess pharmacological potential of medicinal herbals. The purpose of this study was to assess ingredients of “Elixir amarum Hiaernei” from a sensory perspective.       Methods The ingredients in “Elixir amarum Hiaernei” according to the 18th century recipes: agarikon, aloe, gentian, myrrh, rhubarb, saffron, Theriac Andromachalis, zedoary together with alcohol and sugar. These ingredients were assessed by a trained sensory panel using a slightly modified version of the Flavor Profile Method®. Each ingredient was evaluated with respect to odor, taste and flavor. Results All ingredients were intense in taste, flavor and odor. The ingredients could be described due to its sensory characteristics, in which they differed largely. However, they had in common that they were high in bitterness. Discussion The ingredients of this historic medication had intense tastes, flavors and odors in line with historical sources. It points for example out that the senses, especially olfaction, was of high importance for the apothecary during the 18th century. In order to find the right blend of ingredients the sensory profiles were of highest importance, both ingredients and blended medication were valuated due to this by physicians as well as patients. Sensory evaluation was also of major importance in the quality assessment of medical herbals by the early modern apothecary.   Sensory profiles of the medical ingredients will be presented at the Eurosense symposium.

  • Historical Continuity or Different Sensory Worlds? : What we Can Learn about the Sensory Characteristics of Early Modern Pharmaceuticals by Taking Them to a Trained Sensory Panel.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early modern medicine was much more dependent on the senses than its contemporary counterpart. Although a comprehensive medical theory existed that assigned great value to taste and odor of medicaments, historical descriptions of taste and odor appears imprecise and inconsistent to modern eyes. How did historical actors move from subjective experience of taste and odor to culturally stable agreements that facilitated communication about the sensory properties of medicaments? This paper addresses this question, not by investigating texts, but by going straight to the sensory impression, which certain substances convey. The aim is not to overwrite or rectify historical descriptions but to investigate whether modern methodologies for sensory assessment can be enlisted to understand the past. We draw on history of science for framing and research questions, pharmaceutical science for knowledge of pharmaceuticals and preparations, and food and meal science for assaying procedures and protocols. We show that sensory evaluation can yield precise descriptions that would not have been alien to early modern medicine makers. However, there are problems with translating descriptions of taste between different historical contexts. By comparing contemporary descriptions of sensations with eighteenth-century ones, the article discusses how sensory descriptions are highly dependent on context, and subject to historical change.
