  • De obesuttnas arkeologi : människor, metoder och möjligheter
  • 2020

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: META H : historiskarkeologisk tidskrift. - Uppsala : Historiskarkeologiska föreningen. - 2002-0406.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to present a recently started project about the heritage of subaltern people in Sweden. In the paper we focus on the parts of the project that concerns the rural history of the 18th and 19th centuries, especially crofters. The background to the project is the introduction of major changes in the Swedish Historic Environments Act in 2014. A radical novelty is that remains of human activity and buildings executed before AD 1850 now are legally protected sites. With this change a large number of remains, including hitherto un- or underresearched types, are to be included in heritage management, conservation and rescue archaeology. Here we present the background and starting points of the project, in order to show the potential of archaeological studies of landless subalterns in rural areas.

  • Digitala primärkällor i historieundervisningen : en utmaning för elevers historiska tänkande och historiska empati
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : CSD Karlstad. - 2000-9879. ; :2, s. 208-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, 110 Swedish upper secondary students use a historical database designed for research. We analyze how they perceive the use of this digital tool in teaching and if they are able to use historical thinking and historical empathy in their historical writing and presentations. Using case-study methodology including questionnaires, observations, interviews and text analysis we find this to be a complex task for students. Our results highlight technological problems and problems in contextualizing historical evidence. However, students show interest in using primary sources and ability to use historical thinking and historical empathy, especially older students in more advanced courses when they have time to reflect upon the historical material.

  • Transhumant pastoralism in historic landscapes : Beginning a European perspective
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Historical Archaeologies of Transhumance across Europe. - : Taylor & Francis. - 9781351213387 - 9780815380320 ; , s. 1-13
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Pastoralism offers a vast field of study, and within it transhumant practices represent an important range of past and contemporary human mobility strategies. In its widest sense, transhumance may simply be described as the seasonal movement of livestock. The Oxford English Dictionary adds some environmental qualification to this by defining transhumance as “the action or practice of moving livestock from one grazing ground to another in a seasonal cycle, typically to lowlands in winter and highlands in summer”. The wide-ranging geographic and social implications of such a definition mean, of course, that the study of transhumant practices permits a very wide perspective on human society, touching on themes as diverse as livestock management, economic responsiveness, social mobility and competition for land. Furthermore, use of the relative words ‘lowlands’ and ‘highlands’ means that a considerable proportion of the earth’s surface may be considered as potential settings for transhumance. There are consequently many ways in which people might conceive of and define the practice, and there has not been one, but many transhumant pastoralisms in Europe during historical times

  • Prehistoric history in Swedish primary school education : pupils' expression of empathy after visiting a cultural heritage site
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Education 3-13. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0300-4279 .- 1475-7575.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the concept of historical empathy in the context of field trips for young pupils to a prehistoric heritage site in Sweden. The example discussed is a field trip to Vitlycke, a heritage and rock carving site with an associated reconstructed Bronze Age farm, where pupils had the opportunity to experience prehistory with all their senses. The study is based on the idea that historical empathy is a process that involves both cognitive and affective dimensions and that both dimensions are important for progress. The pupils were interviewed after the trip and their responses are related to the concepts of perspective recognition and care. The study shows how the cognitive and affective dimensions were interwoven in the pupils' reasoning and how the field trip contributed to an emotional and personal connection necessary for the development of historical empathy. This engagement led to a broadening and deepening of the pupils' cognitive understanding of Bronze Age life and living conditions, while the cognitive understanding of the historical context contributed to a framework in which they could use their imagination. The results also show the importance of giving pupils time to follow up on their experiences after visiting a heritage site.

  • Gillbergaknaparna : En studie i den svenske storbondens habitus ca 1750-1850
  • 2007

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • School on Trial: Interpretation and Use of School History in Contemporary Debate About the Future of Society and School. This article centres on how education and the Swedish School Commission as an historical phenomenon become resources in the discussion on how society and education should be developed. Three authors’ texts on the School Commission are analysed based on narrative history theory, which engages in how history is used to legitimise political change. Education and the School Commission are inscribed in a national narrative of decline. The 1946 Commission is blamed for the perceived problems in present society and education, allegedly having caused a lack of focus on nationalism, morals and knowledge in Sweden. To change society, the message is, education must learn from the historical mistake of the Commission and invest in knowledge and nationalism. The narrative plot is reminiscent of other historical narratives, for example, of heroes (teachers) and villains (Alva Myrdal), who personify structural changes. The historical narrative of education also fits in with contemporary trends of modernism criticism.

  • Effects of Gamification in a Teacher Education Program, 2010 to 2020
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SAGE Open. - Newbury Park : SAGE Open. - 2158-2440. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of game elements as a means to stimulate students’ motivation has increased in a number of disciplines across theworld after 2010, but apart from a few exceptional cases, it has not been possible to show a significant effect on academicachievement. In this study, the effects of game elements on academic achievement have been investigated among 458 studentsin a teacher education program, distributed across 10 course instances over 11 years (2010–2020). Statistical analyses indi-cated that a game element consisting of a number of hand-in assignments contributed significantly to the total points of thefinal written exam. Although a comparison with the students’ results in the two previous modules showed that two thirds ofthe positive effect could be explained by selection, the remaining one third of the positive effect could still be explained interms of the game elements significantly improving the achievements on the final written exam.
