  • Föreställningar om informationssamhället under 1980-talets första hälft : transkript av ett vittnesseminarium vid Tekniska museet i Stockholm den 27 maj 2008
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The witness seminar “Föreställningar om informationssamhället under 1980-talets första hälft” [Ideas about the Information Society during the first half of the 1980s] was held at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm on May 27 2008 and was led by Crister Skoglund and Bernt Skovdahl. The panel consisted of representatives both of those who around 1980 were enthusiastic for, and those who were sceptically against, the belief that we were entering the Information Society. Two projects were discussed regarding new ways to use computers; TERESE and KOM. The first one mentioned was an attempt to facilitate cooperation between entrepreneurs and the second one was a computer forum for open discussions. In many ways they foreboded what later became everyday practice on the Internet, but at this time they were questioned. Not at least the idea to use big and expensive mainframe computers for such a “simple” task as to let ordinary people communicate with each other. During the seminar those who had been sceptical to the term “Information Society” stated however, that they were not against using computers for communication between ordinary people, but opposed the grand claims made by those who equalised an “Information Society” with a “Knowledge Society”. The sceptics found their theories of knowledge naïve and challengeable. In Sweden we thus got an epistemological debate outside the academic philosophical circles that has implications to this day. A third theme in the seminar was the attitude to computers in the Swedish labour movement. A shift from a positive view, over a more doubtful period around 1980, back to a new positive attitude could be noted. From 1985 the main doctrine was that the workers should conquer the new technology instead of opposing it.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a considerable research gap in both maritime and military history concerning the naval use of bowmen. For over three millennia—spanning from the ancient Egyptians until around the year AD 1600—archery was a key component in maritime combat. This essay highlights the importance, flexibility, and impact of naval archery with special attention given to European waters in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period.

  • From the Hope of Engineering Nature to the Fear of Environmental Destruction : Imagining the Oresund Bridge (1950s-1990s)
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper aims at presenting some aspects of the approach to natural environment in Sweden and Denmark in the second half of the twentieth century. It does so by analysing the hopes and fears generated by several societal actors when imagining the building of an engineering megastructure: the Oresund bridge, a project aimed at uniting the shores of the two states on the Oresund Straight. The bridge was built in the year 2000, but it has been imagined and planned since the nineteenth century by those who hoped to shorten the distance between Sweden and the continent and to produce major freedom of mobility of persons and goods across the Sound. Until the late 1960s, domesticating and exploiting the natural environment in order to favour the societal exigencies was still considered unproblematic. Only since the late 1960s the paradigm of engineering shifted from an anthropocentric perspective to a more sceptic view over the overexploitation of nature. Engineering the Oresund with tons of concrete and metal structures in order to favour car traffic was no more considered as a human victory upon the tyranny of nature, but as an irresponsible act. Concerns over the project were raised by scientists of the most diverse disciplines and by the local communities, which started the first “green wave” in the early seventies, soon followed by the bourgeois parties. The environmental concerns grew since the 1980s into a more general critique of liberalism, of capitalism and of the European Community, making of the Oresund bridge an ambivalent symbol to whom environmentalists reacted in different ways.

  • Koppardalen : Om historiens plats i omvandlingen av ett industriområde
  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The empirical focus of this study is the contemporary transition of the industrial area Koppardalen, situated in Avesta in the middle of Sweden. Koppardalen (literary translated “The Copper Valley”) got its name in 1987 when the Avesta municipality bought the area from an iron and steel company. For a century the Koppardalen area, or Norra verken which was its name before 1987, housed production of iron and steel and at its peak employed more than 2000 men. In the beginning of the 1980s, iron and steel production had moved out and left the area almost abandoned. When the Avesta municipality became the new owner of Koppardalen it was part of a strategy to transform the area to make it more attractive to light industry and by doing so provide Avesta with new employment opportunities. These plans failed and what happened instead is the object of my analysis. The overall purpose of the thesis is to describe and analyse the place of history in the transition process of the Koppardalen industrial area between 1987 and 2003. More specifically, the aim is to answer the two questions: What does the place of history look like? What does the place of history mean? My basic theoretical inspiration comes from the French philosopher and critical hermeneuticer Paul Ricoeur and his reasoning about the logic of explanation and understanding. As an operative theoretical tool I use four fundamental historical tropes in order to analyse the place of history in the transition process. I have chosen three physical and clearly visible changes in Koppardalen that each constitute one chapter in the study. The first change concerns the old blast furnace, which has been renovated and used for art exhibitions, museum installations and other cultural purposes. The second change concerns two former rolling mills, which have been partly torn down and partly rebuilt into a sports arena and office spaces. The third change concerns a new built bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists that connects the Koppardalen area with Avesta city centre. These two parts had earlier been separated from each other, physically as well as mentally. By analysing these three changes I conclude that the most dominant historical trope to be found in Koppardalen is the story about “the foreign country”. The past becomes a different and thrilling contrast that could be used in the effort to make the former industrial area a beautiful, interesting and attractive place. Beside the trope of the foreign country, the story of similarity through history is also present in Koppardalen. Here, the past is compared with today’s situation and periods of change in the past are put into parallel with contemporary challenges of the post-industrial society. Both these tropes, the one of history as a foreign country and the one of history as a parallel of today, paradoxically strengthen the transition process and the power of those actors who work to transform the Koppardalen area. One surprising element is the lack of the historical trope of a lost golden age. The proud and prosperous past in the sense of a lost golden age is not to be found in Koppardalen, or at least not in the rhetoric of the politicians and white-collar workers who are the driving forces in the process. In sum, the study shows how the place of history in a contemporary transition process contains a great variety of simultaneously occurring, non-competing historical tropes.

  • Lagerarbetets robotar? : En etnografisk redogörelse för automationen i arbetslivet
  • 2020
