  • Artistic Research: Being There, Explorations into the Local
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nordicum-Mediterraneum. - : The National and University Library of Iceland. - 1670-6242. ; 15:1
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How does artistic research engage with the concept of local? In what ways can art practice be an intervention into traditional notions of history and culture? How does it engage with local and global identities? This book raises questions about transient art practices and site-specific works within communities, as well as art and research based experiences localized in urban and rural spaces, within the body and memory. Being There is a wide-ranging anthology that demonstrates the field of artistic research has never been stronger. The essays and meditations are by visual artists, writers, performers, filmmakers, historians, sound artists, and activists who have worked together in the Nordic Summer University and who share a desire to unite their creative practices with critical enquiry. Their contributions were generated within twice-yearly symposia that moved between Nordic and Baltic countries over a three year cycle of practice-based research. Some contributions are enigmatic meditations on place, whilst others, paradoxically, address the question of what is local through the notion of the nomadic. Whether describing quests of individual artists, or relating to collective endeavours, these works are engaged with the spaces in between. Each offers the reader a thoughtful encounter with the aesthetic, and the political, within a myriad of art practices across a rapidly evolving Europe. A part of the series NSU-press and the subject areas Philosophy and Art

The Visible Award is the first international production award devoted to art work in the social sphere, that aims to produce and sustain socially engaged artistic practices in a global context. Part of the broader research project, aims to research, support and offer a discursive and productive platform to innovative artistic projects that are able to become visible also in fields other than the artistic ones.

  • White Mythologies and Epistemic Refusals: Teaching Artistic Research Through Institutional Conflict
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Teaching Artistic Research: Conversations Across Cultures. - Berlin : De Gruyter. - 3110662396
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay outlines a heuristic model of a teaching practice that attempts to operate within the fundamentally contested field of artistic research by exploring the terms and processes of conflicted institutional practices and rhetorics. Taking account of the different ways in which artistic research has become a highly visible moment of institutional conflict, this paper outlines an approach to teaching early-stage researchers through active processes of knowledge conflict. The model outlined here proposes a group process by which fault-lines of conflict and disagreement may be thematized and operationalized within a teaching praxis. The provisional model being proposed is based upon concrete experiment and application over the last decade in a range of formal and informal educational settings.

  • Sanner, Kalle, 1978, et al. (författare)
  • Lukas / Markus
  • 2018
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lukas/Markus is the result of a photographic project spanning over a decade. Located in the Western Cemetery in Gothenburg, architect Sven Brolid's two mirrored chapels Saint Lukas and Saint Markus were designed and built in the 1960:s, the era when Swedish functionalism was at its very peak. A stark silhouette in the otherwise sparsely built-up cemetery, the building does little to blend in with its surroundings. However, there is harmony to be found in the fine tuned correspondence between the materials and in the considered, geometrical features giving the building its characteristic appearance. During a walk through the cemetery, Kalle Sanner discovered the building and immediately felt a connection to it, prompting him to start exploring the site. As time went by, Sanner continued to return to the building with his large format camera and the project grew along with Sanner's interest in the building and its architect. The result is a sensitive portrait of both the building itself and its surroundings, but also of the passing of time as the seasons shift in front of Sanner's lense. Sanner's images are complemented by an essay by social researcher Karl Palmås. The clothbound hardcover is embossed, with partial, transparent foil, echoing the facade of Sven Brolid's building. The book was designed by Lundgren+Lindqvist and is printed in HPT Offset and featuring three different paper stocks. Kalle Sanner (b. 1978) lives and works as a photographer in Gothenburg, Sweden. In addition to self-initiated projects, Sanner works on commissions for cultural institutions, design studios and architectural firms. He is Head of the Photographic Department at Akademi Valand in Gothenburg.

  • Seeing Like a Smuggler: Borders from Below
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The word smuggler often unleashes a simplified, negative image painted by the media and the authorities. Such state-centric perspectives hide many social, political and economic relations generated by smuggling. This book looks at the practice through the eyes of the smugglers, revealing how their work can be productive, subversive and deeply sociopolitical. By tracing the illegalised movement of people and goods across borders, Seeing Like a Smuggler shows smuggling as a contradiction within the nation-state system, and in a dialectical relation with the national order of things. It raises questions on how smuggling engages and unsettles the ethics, materialities, visualities, histories and the colonial power relations that form borders and bordering. Covering a wide spectrum of approaches from personal reflections and ethnographies to historical accounts, cultural analysis and visual essays, the book spans the globe from Colombia to Ethiopia, Singapore to Guatemala, Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and from Kurdistan to Bangladesh, to show how people deal with global inequalities and the restrictions of poverty and immobility.

  • Study of the Effects of Daylighting and Artificial Lighting at 59° Latitude on Mental States, Behaviour and Perception
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 15:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although there is a documented preference for daylighting over artificial electric lighting indoors, there are comparatively few investigations of behaviour and perception in indoor day-lit spaces at high latitudes during winter. We report a pilot study designed to examine the effects of static artificial lighting conditions (ALC) and dynamic daylighting conditions (DLC) on the behaviour and perception of two groups of participants. Each group (n = 9 for ALC and n = 8 for DLC) experienced one of the two conditions for three consecutive days, from sunrise to sunset. The main results of this study show the following: indoor light exposure in February in Stockholm can be maintained over 1000 lx only with daylight for most of the working day, a value similar to outdoor workers’ exposure in Scandinavia; these values can be over the recommended Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance threshold; and this exposure reduces sleepiness and increases amount of activity compared to a static artificial lighting condition. Mood and feeling of time passing are also affected, but we do not exactly know by which variable, either personal or group dynamics, view or variation of the lighting exposure. The small sample size does not support inferential statistics; however, these significant effects might be large enough to be of importance in practice. From a sustainability point of view, daylighting can benefit energy saving strategies and well-being, even in the Scandinavian winter.
