M+ är dock mycket mer än byggnaden. Lars Nittve berättar under ett samtal i Umeå 2014 om hur det är att skapa ett nytt slags museum enligt demokratisk modell som inte tidigare funnits i Hongkong.

- The word smuggler often unleashes a simplified, negative image painted by the media and the authorities. Such state-centric perspectives hide many social, political and economic relations generated by smuggling. This book looks at the practice through the eyes of the smugglers, revealing how their work can be productive, subversive and deeply sociopolitical. By tracing the illegalised movement of people and goods across borders, Seeing Like a Smuggler shows smuggling as a contradiction within the nation-state system, and in a dialectical relation with the national order of things. It raises questions on how smuggling engages and unsettles the ethics, materialities, visualities, histories and the colonial power relations that form borders and bordering. Covering a wide spectrum of approaches from personal reflections and ethnographies to historical accounts, cultural analysis and visual essays, the book spans the globe from Colombia to Ethiopia, Singapore to Guatemala, Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and from Kurdistan to Bangladesh, to show how people deal with global inequalities and the restrictions of poverty and immobility.

Study of the Effects of Daylighting and Artificial Lighting at 59° Latitude on Mental States, Behaviour and Perception

- Although there is a documented preference for daylighting over artificial electric lighting indoors, there are comparatively few investigations of behaviour and perception in indoor day-lit spaces at high latitudes during winter. We report a pilot study designed to examine the effects of static artificial lighting conditions (ALC) and dynamic daylighting conditions (DLC) on the behaviour and perception of two groups of participants. Each group (n = 9 for ALC and n = 8 for DLC) experienced one of the two conditions for three consecutive days, from sunrise to sunset. The main results of this study show the following: indoor light exposure in February in Stockholm can be maintained over 1000 lx only with daylight for most of the working day, a value similar to outdoor workers’ exposure in Scandinavia; these values can be over the recommended Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance threshold; and this exposure reduces sleepiness and increases amount of activity compared to a static artificial lighting condition. Mood and feeling of time passing are also affected, but we do not exactly know by which variable, either personal or group dynamics, view or variation of the lighting exposure. The small sample size does not support inferential statistics; however, these significant effects might be large enough to be of importance in practice. From a sustainability point of view, daylighting can benefit energy saving strategies and well-being, even in the Scandinavian winter.

- Lars Israel Wahlman var en av de stora förnyarna av den svenska trädgårdskonsten i början av 1900-talet, manifesterat i villaträdgårdar och parker, begravningsplatser och en rad parker. Denna verksamhet, som länge stått i skuggan av välkända byggnadsverk som Tjolöholms slott i Halland och Engelbrektskyrkan i Stockholm, liksom villorna Trefnan och Trotzgården i Hedemora, presenteras nu för första gången. Med sina mångskiftande och konsekvent genomförda arbeten framstår Wahlman som en av de viktigaste förmedlarna av en trädgårdsstil i Arts and Crafts-rörelsens anda till Sverige. Ingen annan svensk arkitekt ritade så många trädgårdar under denna period. Wahlman ville att det yttre av hans byggnader och deras interiörer tillsammans med omgivningarna skulle fungera som väl sammanlänkade helheter. Att även skapa trädgårdar var en självklar del i denna helhetstanke.

Carl Christoffer Gjörwell 1766-1837 : byggnader och inredningar i Sverige och Finland

- Carl Christoffer Gjörwell 1766-1837. Architecture and interior decorative art in Sweden and Finland from the time of Gustav 111 to that of Karl XlVJohan. The intent of this thesis is to map the life and work of Carl Christoffer Gjörwell. The point of departure has been the voluminous store of architectural drawings and documents, available primarily in state and local archives in Stockholm, but also in archives located elsewhere and in private hands. From 1803 until his death Gjörwell was active as city architect, and a rich collection of drawings and documents in the Stockholm City Archive illustrates this aspect of his work. He was also frequently employed by private individuals, and a collection of letters in the Royal Library from about 300 correspondents gives a good idea of the wishes and requirements that people had in regard to buildings at that time. Thanks to these letters, previously anonymous buildings, as well as renovations of buildings in Stockholm and mansions, can now he ascribed to Gjörwell. Letters and drawings are the basis for a chapter on his journey to Italy in 1794-96. French influence was great throughout Gjörwell’s life. Following his student period at the Art Academy he was employed as assistant to the French architect and stage set designer Louis Jean Desprez. This collaboration, which lasted until the death of Gustav III, was decisive for the earliest creations by Gjörwell. The French-Italian influence was further strengthened after the twoyear- long journey to Italy, where he spent most of his time in Rome. The voyage out by boat via Algiers and the return through Germany made lasting impressions, as well. During a month’s stay in Hamburg, Gjörwell met with the exiled French architect Joseph-Jacques Ramée daily. Following his return 1798-99 he designed two of his most important buildings, Abo Academy and a private palace in Stockholm for the master brewer Abraham Westman. Starting around the turn of the century, Gjörwell’s French impulses received a new orientation through J.-C. Krafft's and N. Ransonnette’s volume of pictures of French residential architecture from the 1780s and 1790s, and Percier and Fontaine’s publication of interiors from the late 1790s onward to 1812. Gjörwell owned both of these works and realized their ideas in, among his other works, the exteriors of manor houses. The clearest example of Percier’s and Fontaine’s influence can be seen in the royal bedchambers at Rosersberg and the Stockholm Castle, which were decorated for Karl XIII and his consort Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotta around 1810. The foreign examples made an impression on Gjörwell, who transformed them into Swedish reality that set the then current style. Characteristic of his architectural design is his ability to capture the current esthetic mood, while adjusting to the nature of the task and the owner’s desires and resources. He secured royal, private, local governmental and state commissions, and stands out, along with Fredrik Blom, as the most successful and versatile architect during the first four decades of the 19th century.

- Suburbs sprang up round about many Swedish towns and cities in and around 1900. For obvious reasons, they were most numerous round about the City of Stockholm. This thesis sets out to map and discuss urban planning in the suburban Stockholm municipalities between 1900 and 1960. Urban planning development in the suburban municipalities differs to a great extent from that of the towns, cities and boroughs of Sweden. The reason for the difference is to a great extent to be found in the structure of urban planning legislation.I have chosen to undertake two case studies, both in Huddinge. The first concerns urban planning in the rural townships of Huddinge at the beginning of the 20th century, and second the construction of rental housing undertaken by the municipality in central Huddinge during the late 1940s and the 1950s. Comparison with two reference municipalities, Täby and Sollentuna, shows Huddinge in many ways typifying developments in the suburban Stockholm municipalities, the main differences being that Huddinge had six rural townships – the largest number anywhere in Sweden – and in the late 1940s and the 1950s built multi-family housing under its own aegis.

The essays cover a wide range of avant-garde manifestations: literature, visual arts, theatre, architecture and design, film, radio, body culture and magazines. It is the first major historical work to consider the Nordic avant-garde in a transnational perspective that includes all the arts and to discuss the role of the avant-garde not only within the aesthetic field but in a broader cultural and political context: the pre-war and wartime responses to international developments, the new cultural institutions, sexual politics, the impact of refugees and the new start after the war.
