- This article focuses on the ways in which the environment is pictured in an industrial archive in Sweden, and how the use of photography is implicated in the industrialization of rivers. The fluid nature of landscapes, the role of landscape and colonialism connected to photography in Sweden is considered through a selection of archival photographs from log driving industry. The article centers around the case example of photographs from the Ljusnan log-driving archive. Rephotographic tendencies surface, and this article argues that repeat photography is used in the documentation of and redesign of the landscape. The terms repeat photography and rephotography are discussed and clarified. This research acknowledges rephotography for industrial purposes in contrast to environmental goals, suggesting that industrial photographic archives can provide a starting point for new narratives of places of environmental change and extractive industry.

Defined by deviations : the Traveling Transect as a bodily research approach to appropriate and disseminate places

- Based on a Travelling Transect approach, this paper explores how ample interpretations and opportunities for new thoughts about sites are developed, especially when these sites are explored along a combined material and immaterial predefined linear path that is distorted, challenged and redefined by bodily encounters and sensations on site. By using the Travelling Transect as an approach to do research and develop new understandings of sites, possible overlooked qualities manifest themselves in a series of registrations collected or inspired by encounters on site. Illustrated through a design research study around the Öresund strait, researchers exemplify how data becomes unlocked and re-interpreted through the approach. In short, the aesthetic values identified in a map, in a geometry or a static composition are displaced by the approach to values connected to an experience of site's audio or material surroundings, time-space relations and on-site reflections and sensations connected to movement.

Atlantic City Genocide Memorial

- The proposed memorial site sits on the axis between the suburban fabric of the city, predominately existing to the west of Albany Avenue and the tourist and commercial centre of the city to the east. Building on the formal composition of the city the proposition situates itself on a north south axis with the existing World War I Memorial located in O'Donnell Park. Albany Avenue opens into Route 40 formed from the Oregon Trail navigating from Atlantic City, west to San Francisco.Visitors are presented with both the World War I Memorial and the Holocaust Memorial.The Genocide Memorial appears as a black Chamber in the Atlantic Ocean extending the city's fabric into the sea, connecting all continents through the moving waters of the ocean. Amongst the sand and removed from the sea a room, described as the Orientation Chamber, sits marking access from the boardwalk to the beach. As a result the memorial site expands beyond a bounded territory encompassing the city's formal layout, its boardwalk and its inherent natural and man made landscape.

The Uninvisible Koja

- This installation was commissioned as part of a joint project between the city of Umeå, Sweden and the city of Komatsu, Japan. The words koda – koht – kodu – katus of Finno-Ugric origin have arrived in both Swedish and Japanese cultures in the form of the word Koja or 小屋. The word Koja refers to place, home, roof and house. In the modern Swedish context the term is quite broad extending to a variety of anonymously authored small structures or enclosures found in the wilderness. Koja is also used to describe constructions that a child might make out of a cardboard box: a first getaway in their home, the making of a private world of play. Koja also refers to small hunting, fishing huts or small structures in remote places. In respect to the idea of Heterotopia Peter Johnston wrote on Michel Foucault’s 1966-67 radio broadcasts where he described heterotopias as“Illustrations of the concept refer to various children’s imaginative games, mentioning tents and dens in gardens as well as all the games played on or under the covers of the parents’ bed. The children’s inventive play produces a different space that at the same time mirrors what is around them. The space reflects and contests simultaneously.”In 1972 Ugo La Pletra presented Counter Design as Postulation at MoMas Italy: the New Domestic Landscape: the Indivisible Koja comes together as a series of contradictions. Kojas by nature are subversive structures; they operate as both a place to escape to and a way of capturing a territory.The Koja is made from modified gold vinyl sheet that has been adhered to Mylo to form a two-sided reflective metallic material. The sheet is then cut with an expanding camouflage pattern that opens up when hung. Inside the Koja is an Aluminium Chaise Longue that can hold two people lying down. Once inside a sensor activates a mobile phone scrambler producing an invisible blanket that renders the inhabitant invisible from the unseen infrastructures of global satellite telecommunications.

Urbana nyanser av grönt : om grönskans roll i en förtätad klimatsmart stad

- I ett gränsöverskridande samarbete mellan universitet, kommun, stat och företag har vi i denna skrift försökt fånga och utveckla idéer om den urbana grönskans roll i en förtätad stad. Frågan är högaktuell när flertalet kommuner förtätar, för att minska transporter och koldioxidutsläpp samt bevaka intresset för den goda jordbruksmarken så att den fortsatt kan vara tillgänglig för livsmedelsförsörjning. Men förtätningen är inte bara av godo, om nära rekreationsområden försvinner och negativa extrema klimatsituationer som värmeöar, vindeffekter eller översvämningar uppstår. Därför vill vi se vårt arbete som ett inlägg i debatten om vart vi är på väg, med hantering av det offentliga rummet men också av det privata. I vårt arbete vill vi synliggöra de möjligheter som en grönare stadsplanering skulle kunna leda till, där tätt inte alltid är tätt, och där grönt nyanseras, såväl vad det gäller estetik, upplevelse, som biologisk mångfald, skötsel eller användning. Vi vill visa på att grönska i nya former kan bidra till att utveckla stadens mellanrum, och vi vill berätta om dess fördelar för att minska negativa effekter av en bebyggelseförtätning. Vi bidrar också med synpunkter på vilka frågor som bör ställas inför en förtätning i staden; om klimat, trygghet, mötesplatser, biologisk mångfald, men också om 'grön stadsbyggnadskonst' där en urban grön typologi och nya grönurbana begrepp och visioner behöver utvecklas. Vi som medverkat i projektet hoppas att denna skrift och tillhörande film, ska inspirera till vidare diskussion om vad tätt och grönt kan vara i en stad som utvecklas med hållbara förtecken.
