    • The construct of the deviant woman is analysed from literary, sociolinguistic and historical-cultural perspectives, revealing insights about cultures and societies. • Editorial : reconsidering the Carpet Paradigm: carpet as material, motif and medium
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Konsthistorisk Tidskrift. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0023-3609 .- 1651-2294. ; 83:3, s. 207-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • In this special issue of Konsthistorisk tidskrift some implications of reconsidering the so-called carpet paradigm are persued. This can provide for new angles not only when it comes to research on the Oriental carpet and work on the carpet as motif and medium but also for demonstrating in a further sense how the carpet – and research on it – can be used as a model to understand art and art histories. The American art historian Joseph Masheck introduced this term in his influential article ‘The Carpet Paradigm" (1976). Here it includes analysing the carpet as motif as well as medium. It investigates how the carpet functions as a model for a better understanding of the image in general. Of special importance is the fact that the carpet paradigm forms a crossroads for research on images, textiles, literature, decorative arts, iconography, gender, ornament and cultural transfers–to name but a few. The lines of investigation are interconnecting.

  • Calling a visitor by her name : The potential of a subjective art educational situation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: [no title] - NORDIK XII 2018. - : The Nordic Association for Art Historians. ; , s. 110-111, s. 110-111
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Guided tours for adults in Art Museums are often conducted in an anecdotal and rather disinterested fashion. This has been duly critized by researchers in the art eductional field. A series of initiatives on art educational activities for participants with neurodegenerative disorders have contributed to breaking this tradition. Since 2007, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York has offered the Alzheimer's Project: Making Art Accessible to People with Dementia. The project has aimed at increasing the well-being of participants rather than improving their art-historical education. This has in turn led to greater focus on dialogue between the art, the guide and the participants, where the participants' own observations are given special attention. Several art institutions in the Nordic countries have been inspired by this method, for example in the form of meetings with memories (see fx http://www.alzheimerfonden.se/motenmedminnen ). To call a visitor by his or her name is one aspect of the method used. This paper focuses some of the discussions about the art pedagogical position taken in feminist and queer theory through examples from the educational practice. The aim is to explore how these art educational situations are staged in relation to the target group, people with dementia and how this can broaden the public engagement in dialogue with art.

  • Depictions of the Female Artist in French Caribbean Women’s Theatre
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Gender and Authority Across Disciplines, Space and Time. - : Palgrave Macmillan.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter addresses the experience of black female creatives as depicted in plays by Caribbean women writers; Maryse Condé’s Pension les alizés (1988), and Gerty Dambury’s Trames (2008) and Des doutes et des errances (2014). The plays here analyzed depict female characters as artists, writers, or even performers, who attempt to reconcile everyday life, relationships and their creative work. Condé and Dambury stage the obstacles relating to race and gender discrimination their characters face, but also how these women transcend stereotypes and strive for a new form of creative expression. Looking at plays written between the 1980s and the mid-2010s – a period which witnessed intense fluctuations of the concepts of race, gender, and identity in the arts and society – allows us to appraise the development of these concerns from the late twentieth to the early twenty-first century.

  • Digitalization and the Production of Feeling and Emotion : The Case of Words Cut into the Skin
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Universitatis Sapientiae Film and Media Studies. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 2065-5924 .- 2066-7779. ; 10:1, s. 183-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates one example of how affect is articulated in the self-cutting of words into the skin and how the meaning of this multimodal statement is modified through remediation. According to Tomkins, affects are understood as intensities that are impossible to frame as feelings or emotions. A theoretical framework based on Laclau’s and Mouffe’s discourse theory and the multimodal categories developed by Kress and van Leeuwen is used. Photographs of self-cutting and statements from people who cut themselves are examined through content analyses. The results show that words that had been cut into the skin often referred to painful experiences, disgust directed against themselves or social isolation. Further, the study shows that when the cut-in words are remediated through a photograph, digitalized and published online, other meanings appear. Inside Internet communities for people who self-injure, the photographs were associated with a communal experience, identification and prescribed activity. The original self-oriented feelings about one’s shortcomings and isolation attached to self-cutting could be altered so that those connoted, instead, experiences of solidarity, identity and intimacy.

  • Scripts of Kingship : Essays on Bernadotte and Dynastic Formation in an Age of Revolution
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • When French Marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected heir to the Swedish Throne in 1810, a dramatic dynastic venture commenced. In an age of revolutions, marked by political as well as cultural upheavals, the commoner from Pau was transformed into King Charles XIV John and the head of a new royal dynasty in Sweden and Norway. Although fraught with challenges, the venture proved successful. As restoration set in, and the Napoleonides of Europe fell one after the other, Bernadotte held fast, and today the dynasty is approaching its bicentennial on the throne. In nine illustrated essays, the formation of a dynasty is explored as it unfolded in media such as ceremonies, spatial arrangements, opera performances, publicity and panegyrics.
