  • Light shapes spaces : experience of distribution of light and visual spatial boundaries
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Light enables us to experience space. The distribution of light is vital for spatial experience but has not been the main focus of previous research on lighting. The lighting designer’s professional knowledge is to a great extent experience-based and tacit. With design practice as the point of departure, this thesis aims to explore spatiality and enclosure in relation to the distribution of light – with the intention of increasing subjects’ understanding of what can be regarded as a space, and to show how spaces can be shaped by the distribution of light. By focusing on users’ experiences and interpretations, relationships between the distribution of light and perceived spatial dimensions and experienced spatial atmosphere have been investigated. The main contribution of this thesis is to widen the base of knowledge that lighting designers, architects and customers can use as a common reference. This thesis is based on three studies: the Scale Model Study, the Auditorium Study and the Church Park Study. The thesis includes concept- and method development. The mixed methodologies comprise a range from introspective phenomenological observations to deep interviews and questionnaires. The experimental setups have also shifted from scale models to real-life interior and exterior settings. Consequently, a quantitative approach has complemented the mainly qualitative approach. Through artistically based research, patterns and relationships are dealt with in complex real spaces. The findings of these studies lead to a discussion of when, why and how patterns of brightness and darkness influence spatial perceptions of dimensions. The findings also show that brightness not only contributes to our experiencing a space as more spacious than it really is, but in certain situations brightness can actually have the reverse effect. Furthermore, darkness can contribute to a spacious impression, which has hardly been discussed in previous research. What subjects regard as a space may shift between the clearly defined physical space and the perceived space, which include light zones. Light zones can create a sense of inclusion or exclusion for subjects, which affects their sense of community and their feeling of safety. Light topography, e.g. the height of luminaire positions, as well as light direction influence the way we experience the private and the public. Enclosure can, if related to visible spatial boundaries, facilitate reassurance and safety.

  • Crafting Futures in Lebanese Refugee Camps : The Case of Burj El Barajneh Palestinian Camp
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: FORMakademisk. - Oslo : OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. - 1890-9515. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The initiative at the Burj El Barajneh camp is run by a network of local associations, and aims at improving living conditions, services, infrastructure and livelihoods for the inhabitants. Burj el Barajneh has a large number of active associations and many highly educated professionals. However, in this kind of complex hyperdense context any kind of change needs to be carefully considered, there are no simple recipes, and existing professional expertise does not necessarily match the specific conditions of the locality. By working with collective design and collaboration between the camp's inhabitants, it becomes possible to envisage larger coordinated efforts, and to solve issues that remain blocked at an individual level.

  • Colour design effects on the visibility of shape : exploring shape defining design concepts in architectural theory and practice
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Colour and light in architecture. ; , s. 160-167
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the relevance of three concepts for shape defining colour design, developed from camouflage theory. The visual distinction between colour patterns as defining either colour or shape allows colour design to interfere with shape defining patterns given by any specific light situation. The concepts counter-/co-shading, disruption and constructive shading are applied in descriptions and analysis of colour design effects, on both a selection of painted geometrical reliefs and existing buildings. Analysing colour design as interacting with shape defining patterns allows an explanation of how colour design affect the visibility of shape and may produce a more complex visual situation. Inconsistencies result in ambivalent visibility of shape, affecting the impression of the light situation and atmosphere. In conclusion the three developed concepts clearly contribute to a more precise understanding of colour design effects on the visibility of shape in an architectural context.

  • The Absent Meaning of Concrete Form in Theory of Architecture
  • 1996
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to discuss architecture as forming practical conditions for our way-of-being, and to clarify that which prevents traditional theory of architecture from dealing with these practical conditions as such. The dissertation investigates a theoretical problem concerning the nature of the relation between human being and the built environment. The main question is: In what way can we treat architecture as concrete material form, involved in such a way in our practical being, that it contributes to the maintenance and development of our way-of-being? A related question is: Why is this practical meaning usually so hard to treat in theory? By comparing and discussing a selection of theoretical works marked by their turning away, in different ways, from the actual concrete material form (towards something else), the traditional embrace of a Cartesian concept of human being is found to be what prevents theory of architecture from treating a practical meaning of architecture. The persistence of this concept is also found to be strengthened by the influences of closely related practices in which the use of architectural images, as a means to certain knowledges, play a vital role.

  • The memetic evolution of latin american architectural design culture
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Buildings. - : MDPI. - 2075-5309. ; 11:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Architecture is an evolutionary field. Through time, it changes and adapts itself according to two things: the environment and the user, which are the touchstones of the concept of culture. Culture changes in long time intervals because of its cumulative structure, so its effects can be observed on a large scale. A nation displays itself with its culture and uses architecture as a tool to convey its cultural identity. This dual relationship between architecture and culture can be observed at various times and in various lands, most notably in Latin American designers. The geographical positions of Latin American nations and their political situations in the twentieth century leads to the occurrence of a recognizable cultural identity, and it influenced the architectural design language of that region. The nonlinear forms in architecture were once experienced commonly around Latin America, and this design expression shows itself in the designers’ other works through time and around the world. The cultural background of Latin American architecture investigated within this study, in terms of their design approach based upon the form and effect of Latin American culture on this architectural design language, is examined with the explanation of the concept of culture by two leading scholars: Geert Hofstede and Richard Dawkins. This paper nevertheless puts together architecture and semiology by considering key twentieth century philosophers and cultural theorist methodologies. Cultural theorist and analyst Roland Barthes was the first person to ask architects to examine the possibility of bringing semiology and architectural theory together. Following an overview of existing semiological conditions, this paper analyzed Roland Barthes and Umberto Eco’s hypothesis of the semiological language of architectural designs of Latin American designers by examining their cultural origin. The work’s findings express the historical conditions that enabled the contemporary architecture and culture study of Latin America between 1945 and 1975 to address the “Latin American model” of architectural modernism.

  • Visual browsing of semantic descriptions of heritage buildings morphology
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Digital Media and its Applications in Cultural Heritage, DMACH, Amman, 16-17 March, 2011.. - Amman : The Center for the Study of Architecture in the Arab Region.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution focuses on the possibility to link and visualize the relation between a 3D representation of an architectural building and its conceptual description by a graph-based browser interface. For this reason it is used a 3D model and a web application, the Nubes Visum. This platform utilizes a semantic description model that is defined by a semantic level, a structural level and a representation one. To have a new approach at the stored information we added to Nubes Visum another interface that is divided into two parts: the interactive 3D model and an interactive graph. Being a tree structure every node can have children with the same characteristics. This graph allows to establish a privileged link between the 3D representation of buildings and the concepts that describe them in the world of knowledge. The model's hierarchy is expressed by the tree hierarchies of the graph and in the same web page it is possible to choose the graph related to one of the three semantic description levels. By this bilateral relation between information written in the graph and elements describing the object morphology, is possible to perform information searches in two directions: the seek related to the selected entities in the 3D scene and search of entities in the 3D scene trough queries obtained from database.

  • Unraveling the logics of landscape
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Despite conceptual oscillations through times, the concept of landscape remains highly subjective, whereupon unraveling its 'logics' opens up to a plurality of interpretations. Accordingly, by focusing on the interconnections present in the non-haphazard production of landscape, this publication elaborates on how the rural landscape is valued, monitored, changed, harbored, used and misused, be it through actions, representations or metaphors. This book covers a broad range of topics, with contributions from scholars from more than 30 countries.
