  • Den lilla skalan i den stora – Kaklet i osmanska rum
  • 2022

  • Paradoxes of Appearing: Essays on art, architecture and philosophy
  • 2009
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The book contains a collection of essays by scholars and artists from a range of different fields including art, art history, architectural theory and philosophy. The essays are based on papers given at a symposium in Copenhagen in June 2008 and refer to the following considerations: When spectators confront and designers invent works of art and architecture, vital questions regarding their appearance arise. These are not simply questions about what appears, also what does not, i.e. what withdraws when works are experienced and created. How do we cope with this withdrawal, with latencies that escape concretization? What are the productive paradoxes associated hereto and how do they influence the processes of making? Based on multiple discourses on these subjects, contemporary positions in art, architecture and philosophy draw up new challenges, especially with regard to the creative practices. Within and between these positions emerge potentials for modes of thinking and doing with a new sensitivity. With contributions by Michael Asgaard Andersen and Henrik Oxvig, Renaud Barbaras, Andrew Benjamin, Olafur Eliasson, Sanford Kwinter, David Leatherbarrow, Martin Seel, David Summers, and Sven-Olov Wallenstein.

  • Millesgården : Arkitektur & trädgård
  • 2004
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Lukas / Markus
  • 2018
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lukas/Markus is the result of a photographic project spanning over a decade. Located in the Western Cemetery in Gothenburg, architect Sven Brolid's two mirrored chapels Saint Lukas and Saint Markus were designed and built in the 1960:s, the era when Swedish functionalism was at its very peak. A stark silhouette in the otherwise sparsely built-up cemetery, the building does little to blend in with its surroundings. However, there is harmony to be found in the fine tuned correspondence between the materials and in the considered, geometrical features giving the building its characteristic appearance. During a walk through the cemetery, Kalle Sanner discovered the building and immediately felt a connection to it, prompting him to start exploring the site. As time went by, Sanner continued to return to the building with his large format camera and the project grew along with Sanner's interest in the building and its architect. The result is a sensitive portrait of both the building itself and its surroundings, but also of the passing of time as the seasons shift in front of Sanner's lense. Sanner's images are complemented by an essay by social researcher Karl Palmås. The clothbound hardcover is embossed, with partial, transparent foil, echoing the facade of Sven Brolid's building. The book was designed by Lundgren+Lindqvist and is printed in HPT Offset and featuring three different paper stocks. Kalle Sanner (b. 1978) lives and works as a photographer in Gothenburg, Sweden. In addition to self-initiated projects, Sanner works on commissions for cultural institutions, design studios and architectural firms. He is Head of the Photographic Department at Akademi Valand in Gothenburg.

  • Die moderne Architektur in Island in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Transferprozesse zwischen Adaption und Eigenständigkeit
  • 2011
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • »Modern architecture in Iceland in the first half of the 20th century« explores how modern architecture ends up in a peripheral country and is transformed through its adaptation to the local context — what currents and ideas are absorbed by the first generation of Icelandic architects abroad and adjusted to the native environment, taking Iceland as an example. This transfer offers a unique possibility of observing the spread of modern architecture ›en miniature‹. Because of the comparatively small numbers of architects, the processes of transfer and adaptation can be seen as a whole. In addition, in no other country in europe is the modernisation of architecture so directly influenced by the rapid social changes and technical innovations that have catapulted the country from the middle ages to modern times within a few decades. The book provides a comprehensive overview of Icelandic architecture in the first half of the 20th century and is based on the evaluation of untapped source material.

  • Reconstructing the Stockholm Exhibition 1930. Stockholmsutställningen 1930 rekonstruerad
  • 2016
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Stockholm Exhibition 1930 of Arts and Crafts and Home Industries (›Stockholmsutställningen 1930 av konstindustri, konsthantverk och hemslöjd‹) and the manifesto Acceptera, published the following year by the exhibition organizers, mark the breakthrough of Modern Architecture in Sweden as well as in other Nordic countries. The exhibition is organised by Svenska Slöjdföreningen (›Swedish Arts and Crafts Society‹), managed by its director, the art historian Gregor Paulsson, and designed to a large extent by Gunnar Asplund.Paulsson conceives the exhibition as a comprehensive and future-oriented display programme encompassing the three themes of »Architectural and Construction Details«, »Streets and Gardens, Transport« and »Household Objects«. Asplund designs a complementary display aimed at »beauty and festivity«.The Stockholm Exhibition is a phenomenal success and attracts more than four million visitors, including 25 000 foreign guests, making it at that time the most popular Swedish exhibition ever held. Despite its enormous success the architecture of the Stockholm Exhibition has been studied surprisingly little in detail and its buildings are astonishingly poorly documented. In order to reconstruct the architecture of the Stockholm Exhibition, rediscover its qualities and bring it to life, in 2014 and 2015 master’s students of Chalmers Department of Architecture undertook to reconstruct the pavilions in the form of models as part of the course »Nordic Architecture«.The reconstruction of the pavilions led to a series of discoveries testifying to an architectural quality that cannot be discerned from pictures or drawings, but is documented in this volume. Through the construction of the models of the pavilions of the Stockholm Exhibition, the quality of an architecture, which for over 80 years nobody had seen, could be at least in its essence reconstructed and re-experienced — an architecture which proved to be so important for the culture of modernity in the Nordic countries.

  • Akzeptiere. Das Buch und seine Geschichte. Deutsche Übersetzung mit Einleitung und Kommentar
  • 2018
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The »Stockholm Exhibition 1930 of Arts and Crafts and Home Industries« (›Stockholmsutställningen 1930 av konstindustri, konsthantverk och hemslöjd‹) and the Acceptera-manifesto, published the following year by the exhibition organizers – Gunnar Asplund, Wolter Gahn, Sven Markelius, Gregor Paulsson, Eskil Sundahl und Uno Åhrén – mark the breakthrough of Modern Architecture in Sweden as well as in the other Nordic countries. In Acceptera(›Accept‹) the authors promote, under the term »Functionalism«, or »Funkis«, a modernisation of architecture, urban planning and the arts and crafts, which is the product of inevitable progress and which has to be »accepted« — thus the title of the book. In subsequent years this functionalism develops into an equally aesthetic and political programme for the restructuring of Sweden to a »folkhem« (literally ›a people’s home‹), the term symbolising Sweden’s welfare state.   This book makes the text of the Acceptera-Manifesto accessible to the interested reader in German for the first time. In addition, the history of the book is investigated: the various movements and developments that contribute to the Stockholm exhibition and the publication of Accepteraare examined; the reception and impact of the book are also taken into account. Finally, this edition is extensively annotated and its design follows the Swedish original from 1931 as it constitutes an integral part of the book.
