  • Microclimatic measurements in tropical cities: Systematic review and proposed guidelines
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Building and Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0360-1323 .- 1873-684X. ; 222
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To tackle urban overheating induced by the combined effect of global warming and intensive urbanization, researchers have recommended assimilating microclimate-related strategies into urban design practices. Field measurements, playing a central role in urban climatology, have been widely applied worldwide. Reviewing the last five years' field measurement studies and existing guidelines and standards from WMO (World Meteorological Organization) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization), this study identified a gap between available guidelines and researchers' practical needs to ascertain the collection of high caliber data. Therefore, dedicated guidelines are required to explain the crucial conceptual and application issues and refine systematic field measurement methods. This demand is particularly acute for microscale and urban environments. This study proposed and explained integrated and comprehensive guidelines for systematic microclimate field measurements. The suggested workflow included four main steps: formulating field measurement plan, preparing for field measurements, sustaining measurement quality, and curating data. The complex and heterogeneous environment in urban areas was carefully evaluated to hone the data acquisition campaign and ascertain data quality. Relevant concepts and practices learned from existing guidelines and standards, experiences from actual field studies, and professional recommendations were distilled and incorporated into the guidelines. The significance of a complete report with full metadata was emphasized. Detailed hints, precautions, recommendations, examples, and a metadata checklist were provided as a helpful and actionable package of research procedures.

  • From the Continent to the North – German Influence on Modern Architecture in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Konsthistorisk Tidskrift. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0023-3609. ; 85:1, s. 44-62
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern Architecture in the Nordic countries is – in contrast to that of its countries of origin, i.e. the Netherlands, France, Germany or Russia – not primarily the product of a local development, but for the most part the result of cultural transfer from these countries northward. The aim of this article is to trace this cultural transfer from Germany to Sweden and the effect of German models and examples on the emergence of Modern Architecture in Sweden. Viewing this cultural transfer in a transnational historic context can help to explain the parallels and differences, to illuminate the mechanisms underlying this cultural transfer as well as to understand the different historiographies.

  • Nutrimetabolomics: An Integrative Action for Metabolomic Analyses in Human Nutritional Studies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Molecular Nutrition and Food Research. - : Wiley. - 1613-4125 .- 1613-4133. ; 63:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The life sciences are currently being transformed by an unprecedented wave of developments in molecular analysis, which include important advances in instrumental analysis as well as biocomputing. In light of the central role played by metabolism in nutrition, metabolomics is rapidly being established as a key analytical tool in human nutritional studies. Consequently, an increasing number of nutritionists integrate metabolomics into their study designs. Within this dynamic landscape, the potential of nutritional metabolomics (nutrimetabolomics) to be translated into a science, which can impact on health policies, still needs to be realized. A key element to reach this goal is the ability of the research community to join, to collectively make the best use of the potential offered by nutritional metabolomics. This article, therefore, provides a methodological description of nutritional metabolomics that reflects on the state-of-the-art techniques used in the laboratories of the Food Biomarker Alliance (funded by the European Joint Programming Initiative “A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life” (JPI HDHL)) as well as points of reflections to harmonize this field. It is not intended to be exhaustive but rather to present a pragmatic guidance on metabolomic methodologies, providing readers with useful “tips and tricks” along the analytical workflow.

  • Location matters. A systematic review of spatial contextual factors mediating ecosystem services of urban trees
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ecosystem Services. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-0416. ; 50
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To ensure and maintain ecosystem service delivery in cities undergoing densification, strategic tree planting is important. The effects of tree location on ecosystem service delivery have been emphasised. However, there is no integrated overview of the different aspects of tree location, here called spatial contextual factors, that mediate urban tree ecosystem services. This paper presents the results of a systematic literature review and provides a comprehensive overview of spatial contextual factors recognised by research as relevant for ecosystem service delivery by urban trees. To support creating such an overview, we first gain insight into the current common understanding of what spatial context is conceptually and how it participates in the co-production of ecosystem services. We find that generally, spatial context is represented by both social and ecological structures and processes and that it mediates ecosystem services by four mechanisms along the ecosystem service cascade. In the next step, we identify 114 unique spatial contextual factors mediating 31 ecosystem services of urban trees. Of all factors, people, represented by physical location, socio-demographics or building functions, mediate the highest number of services, highlighting the importance of urban planning and design in mediating urban tree ecosystem services.

  • Health-Promoting Nature-Based Paradigms in Urban Planning
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Encyclopedia. - 2673-8392. ; 3, s. 1419-1438
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the 19th century, urban planning has largely been guided by ambitions to improve the population’s wellbeing and living conditions. Parks and green areas have played a significant role in this work. However, the confidence in the function of green areas, and thus the motives for creating urban parks and green open spaces, have shifted over the years, which has affected both the planning and design of green areas. This entry describes three overarching paradigm shifts in urban planning, from the end of the 18th century to today, and the focus is on the major paradigm shift that is underway: how green areas can mitigate climate effects, increase biodiversity and at the same time support people’s health and living conditions in a smart city.

  • Review of studies on outdoor thermal comfort in warm humid climates : challenges of informal urban fabric
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Biometeorology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0020-7128 .- 1432-1254. ; 63:10, s. 1449-1462
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In warm humid climate regions where majority of the population spend most of the time outdoors, an adequate outdoor thermal environment is crucial. A number of studies on outdoor thermal comfort in warm humid climates were carried out in the past decade. However, most of these studies focused on the formal urban fabric and left the informal urban fabric, where typically 30 to 85% of the population in developing countries resides, unattended. Theoretically, the informal urban fabric structure of towns/cities poses many outdoor thermal environmental challenges, such as lack of air movement, high thermal stress and discomfort. This paper reviews previous research on outdoor thermal comfort in warm humid climates, and, particularly, it focuses on the relationship between outdoor thermal comfort and urban fabric as well as human thermal perception. Regarding the formal urban fabric, this review asserts that the thermal comfort range is higher in warm humid climates than in temperate climates and that thermal indices alone cannot predict thermal comfort; behavioural and psychological adaptation have proven to have a big impact on thermal perception. As for the informal urban fabric, only few studies have investigated the influence of the urban geometry and none has studied people’s thermal perception of the outdoor thermal environment. To conclude, the article highlights practical challenges posed by the informal urban fabric in contrast to the formal urban fabric in terms of structure (morphology).
