  • Life Is Strange and “Games Are Made” : A Philosophical Interpretation of a Multiple-Choice Existential Simulator With Copilot Sartre
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Games and Culture. - : Sage Publications. - 1555-4120 .- 1555-4139. ; 8:1, s. 825-842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The multiple-choice video game Life is Strange was described by its French developers as a metaphor for the inner conflicts experienced by a teenager in trying to become an adult. In psychological work with adolescents, there is a stark similarity between what they experience and some concepts of existentialist philosophy. Sartre’s script for the movie Les Jeux Sont Faits (literally “games are made”) uses the same narrative strategy as Life is Strange—the capacity for the main characters to travel back in time to change their own existence—in order to stimulate philosophical, ethical, and political thinking and also to effectively simulate existential “limit situations.” This article is a dialogue between Sartre’s views and Life is Strange in order to examine to what extent questions such as what is freedom? what is choice? what is autonomy and responsibility? can be interpreted anew in hybrid digital–human—“anthrobotic”—environments.

  • The argumentative role of visual metaphor and visual antithesis in ‘fly-on-the-wall’ documentary
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Society for the Study of Argumentation. - 9789036104500 ; , s. 1380-1395
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper, we explore the argumentative role of visual metaphor and visual antithesis in theso- fly-on-the-wall documentary. In this subtype of documentary, which emphatically renouncesvoice-over narration, the filmmakers guide their viewers into reaching certain conclusions by makingchoices regarding the editing as well as the cinematography. We analyse a number of scenes from two filmsby one major representative of the Direct Cinema or fly-on-the-wall documentary, Frederick Wiseman.

  • Visuo-Locomotive Complexity as a Component of Parametric Design for Architecture
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Design for Tomorrow — Volume 2. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811601194 - 9789811601187 ; , s. 993-1004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A people-centred approach for designing large-scale built-up spaces necessitates systematic anticipation of user’s embodied visuo-locomotive experience from the viewpoint of human-environment interaction factors pertaining to aspects such as navigation, wayfinding, usability. In this context, we develop a behaviour-based visuo-locomotive complexity model that functions as a key correlate of cognitive performance vis-a-vis internal navigation in built-up spaces. We also demonstrate the model’s implementation and application as a parametric tool for the identification and manipulation of the architectural morphology along a navigation path as per the parameters of the proposed visuospatial complexity model. We present examples based on an empirical study in two healthcare buildings and showcase the manner in which a dynamic and interactive parametric (complexity) model can promote behaviour-based decision-making throughout the design process to maintain desired levels of visuospatial complexity as part of a navigation or wayfinding experience.

  • Design thinking in public procured contract – is it possible?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: QUIS 13. Service Excellence in Management. - Karlstad : CTF, Service Research Center. - 9789170635069 ; , s. 164-167
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tension between the increased demands on innovation, the use of design thinking for innovation when prerequisite for the service is stipulated in a contract is investigated. In the study context the service is public procured and stipulations in the contracts brings legal consequences to the innovations process. Insights how the tensions between design thinking and contract research can be used in order to create and better understand how new innovative service can be created is provided. The extended abstract ends with proposing research questions.

  • Semantic Analysis of (Reflectional) Visual Symmetry : A Human-Centred Computational Model for Declarative Explainability
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advances in Cognitive Systems. - : Cognitive Systems Foundation. - 2324-8416. ; 6, s. 65-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a computational model for the semantic interpretation of symmetry in naturalistic scenes. Key features include a human-centred representation, and a declarative, explainable interpretation model supporting deep semantic question-answering founded on an integration of methods in knowledge representation and deep learning based computer vision. In the backdrop of the visual arts, we showcase the framework's capability to generate human-centred, queryable, relational structures, also evaluating the framework with an empirical study on the human perception of visual symmetry. Our framework is driven by the application and integration of methods for foundational vision, knowledge representation, and reasoning to the arts, while incorporating evidence from the psychological and social sciences.
