  • Möte med det förflutna : digitaliserade primärkällor i historieundervisningen
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years, the Swedish educational system has undergone considerable change. A new curriculum and swift digitization via the implementation of the "one-to-one" system have increased the call for new teaching methods in schools. Previous research indicates that working with primary sources can enhance students’ historical thinking and historical empathy. The present licentiate dissertation aims to investigate Swedish upper secondary school students’ use of critical thinking and historical empathy when utilizing digitized primary sources, such as the parish registers stored in the Demographic Data Base at Umeå University.        Five classes in grades 1-3, comprising 110 students, in the ages 16 to 19, and three teachers participated in the study. The students were assigned with compiling a report based on the digitised primary source material and presenting their findings in a written paper or oral presentation. The study was evaluated through (1) interviews with students and teachers, (2) classroom observation of the students while working with the material, (3) questionnaires on the students´ view of history, and (4) the completed assignments.          The study shows that all the students achieved some result based on the information found in the digitised primary sources. While they applied historical empathy and historical thinking, it was mixed with presentism. The majority did not make use of corroboration, but those who did displayed more examples of historical thinking and historical empathy, primarily evident in grades 2 and 3 and in the free discussions held after the presentations. The students’ perception of primary sources shifted as a result of this exercise: Their preference for using primary sources had increased, although their trust in primary sources had simultaneously decreased. Teachers and students alike were generally satisfied with the assignment but argued that the database needed improvement in order to enhance its usefulness. Over the course of the assignment, students frequently expressed that the individuals in the digitized material came to life for them, generating feelings of empathy.        The study’s contribution to history didactics is twofold. First, it clearly demonstrates how upper secondary students can make use of historical thinking and historical empathy when studying digitised parish records, even though they have difficulty contextualizing their results. Secondly, it provides insight into how Swedish students learn history and the kind of history that interests them. The results are predominantly in agreement with those from previous studies but this study is pioneering in basing its findings on primary sources that are digitised.

  • Kampen om Asea : lokal stat och industrialisering – Arboga och Västerås 1875–1900
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main purpose of this thesis is to study the role of local government in the process of industrialization and to analyze the decision-making processes which led to developments of water-supply, sewerage and electrification in Sweden in late 19th century. Its’ main focus is centred on the agents involved in this process and primarily on which of their interests infl uenced and limited the introduction of new technology. In the middle of the 1870’s the Swedish towns experienced external pressure for change by central government issuing the so-called ’towns-charters’. These charters were meant to create better living-conditions for the citizens and to make urbanization possible. As a result of this pressure for change, several Swedish towns and cities used their own initiatives in developing industrial infra-structure. By using two centrally located Swedish towns – Arboga and Västerås – the study shows how their investment in industrial infrastructure contributed to the late 19th century industrial development. The study also show that establishment of large technological processes are not easy to introduce just because the necessary techniques are present. Instead, establishment of necessary infrastructure is much easier if all partners involved have a common vision as to future development, a unified view of the potential of new technology as well as a will and ability to work towards a common goal. The mapping-out of the industrial infrastructure in Arboga and Västerås shows how a row of social facts contributed to the different development of the two towns. In Arboga, the clashing interests of the partners involved came to hinder the establishment of new ideas. The fact that they could not agree on a unified vision of future developments meant that they could not cooperate. It also made financing of projects difficult. In Västerås, however, there were contributors with great interest in establishing new technical development. Above all, these were happy to collaborate. The thesis shows that in their openness to innovations, in their attitudes to financing these, in their capacity to cooperate towards great projects and in their ability to reach decisions swiftly, one finds a great part of the explanation to why Västerås in the 20th century developed into the industrial centre of the Lake Mälaren Valley and left Arboga in an industrial back-water. Finally, the thesis show that the industrial development at the end of the 19th century was to a great degree dependent on lone initiatives taken at local level. Thelocal government actively influenced an industrialization through the creation of the conditions necessary for it to grow.

  • Från nyttofordon till frihetsmaskin : Teknisk och institutionell samevolution kring mopeden i Sverige 1952–75
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Blomkvist, Pär & Martin Emanuel, From Utility to Freedom: The Co-evolution of Technology and Institutions in the History of the Swedish Moped 1952–75, Division of Industrial Dynamics, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm (Stockholm 2009) The first of July 1952, the moped was legislatively excluded from existing restrictions for heavier two-wheeled motorized vehicles. A driver/owner of a “bicycle with auxiliary engine” – this was the original denomination of the vehicle – thus needed no registration, driver’s license or insurance, nor pay any vehicle tax. The legislators did, however, postulate some technical requirements. Besides regulation of the engine, the vehicle should be “bicycle-like” and have pedals. It should thus be driven primarily by means of human, not mechanical, power (i.e., it was not supposed to be a lighter version of a motorcycle). In terms of social and economical goals, the state assumed workers to be the primary users, and a utilitarian use rather than one connected to pleasure and spare time. Very quickly, however, the moped lost all resemblance with the ordinary bicycle (except for the pedals). In a new legislation in 1961, the state yielded to the technical development. The moped no longer needed to resemble a bicycle or have pedals. Meanwhile, the moped also became more of a toy for boys – a vehicle for freedom – rather than the useful tool the state had wished for. In fact, we argue that the demands from user groups not foreseen played a crucial role in changing the legal technical requirements of the moped. This report treats the co-evolution, technically and institutionally, of the moped during the period 1952–75. Using a method inspired by evolutionary theory, the moped models released in Sweden in these years are grouped in “families” with distinctive technical features and accompanying presumed uses. For understanding how demands of different user groups can alter the “dominant design” of a technology (Abernathy & Utterback, 1978), the concept pair of technical and functional demand specifications are developed. While dominant design may capture conservative features in technological development, our concepts seem to better capture the dynamics in technical and institutional change – the co-evolution of technology and institutions.
