  • Are We All Archaeologists Now? : Introduction
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary Archaeology. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2051-3429 .- 2051-3437. ; 2:2, s. 217-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The claim that “we are all archaeologists now” extends existing commitments to include into archaeological discussions the views of local communities, researchers in other disciplines, amateur researchers (citizen scientists) and other important stakeholders such as indigenous populations. However, far from all would agree that such inclusivity is indeed appropriate or sensible. The present Forum debating the question whether or not “we are all archaeologists now” demonstrates not only the diversity of viable perspectives on the practice of archaeology but also the variety of possible means of expression and indeed the vitality of archaeological questions in many realms of contemporary society. Contributions have been submitted from around the world and they encompass disciplinary perspectives from archaeology, art, architecture, Urban Studies, design, sociology and anthropology, as well as very personal accounts involving sickness, music and homelessness.

  • Med historien i ryggen : Om den arkeologiska uppgiften
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation explores the boundaries of archaeology. Its subject is an archaeological practice that no longer seems to be able to challenge our modern conception of the world. We are faced with an archaeology that takes the form of a conservative and repetitive practice, because of the discipline’s demand that discussions on epistemology and ontology within its discourse should be incorporated in a presupposed teleological assignment. They must be part of the modern archaeological project or else their critique is irrelevant. The initial disappointment is transformed into an inquisitive exploration of archaeology’s limitations. At the archaeological frontier several keywords are used to illustrate the architecture of that archaeological space. Concepts such as narrative, time, the trace and reality act as themes for a conversation on archaeology and the archaeological. Postprocessual archaeology is called upon as a primary discussant in this conversation, playing the part of a textual embodiment of a virtual archaeological formula. One major component of this formula that is discussed is archaeology’s connection to the historical. History as a narrative form, as a perspective on time and as a metanarrative to refer our statements to, is found to be a metaphysical fundament for the archaeological project, delimiting our understanding of the temporal relationship between the past and the present. The thesis briefly discusses an alternative nostalgic archaeology but this hypothetical post-historic archaeology can never be articulated, since its destiny will be the same as all other similar attempts within archaeology – i.e. to become part of an updated modern archaeological practice. The exploration then ends with an insight that there is no escape from either archaeology or modernity. What is left is only to point out the boundaries, and to let the dreams of freedom that go beyond them keep us from falling into a discursive sleep.

  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thoughtful contribution to the emerging field of space archaeology, Australian archaeologist Alice Gorman goes boldly where no man (!) has gone before. On the one hand, she chronicles her own path, from the girl growing up on a farm in the Australian outback gazing at the stars (and watching the Apollo 11 Moon landing live on television) to the politically engaged academic championing women’s and Indigenous rights in society. On the other hand, the book presents a number of very original insights and arguments about space and the Space Age. As explained at the outset (p.3), Gorman’s professional viewpoint as an archaeologist means that her focus is not just on the technology and science but also on the material and social dimensions of space exploration.

  • Conducting Archaeology in Swedish Sápmi : Policies, Implementations and Challenges in a Postcolonial Context
  • 2021
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since the 1980s, there has been a growing consciousness among heritage workers and policy makers about the management of indigenous heritage. Museums, universities, and other cultural institutions around the world have acknowledged that old work practices must be exchanged for new ones, where the indigenous peoples are allowed influence, stewardship, and interpretative prerogative. One result of these efforts is the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007).With the breakthrough of public archaeology and community archaeology in the 1990s, these ambitions have also been put into practice in multiple archaeological projects around the globe. In my research, I examine the heritage management system of Sweden, and how this system works in relation to the indigenous Sámi. Despite being on the retreat geographically for the past few centuries, the Sámi still dispose of about 50% of the area of Sweden for the grazing of their reindeer, which means the historical and cultural landscape of the Sámi is vast and the archaeological traces of their activities are spread over a large area.In Sweden, about 90% of all archaeological projects are due to land development projects and conducted by archaeological companies operating on a commercial market. The remaining 10% are research projects financed by public funding and mostly conducted by museums and universities. Investigating the Swedish county of Jämtland as a case study and drawing on interviews with ten actors with different perspectives on Sámi heritage, I study what happens when policy meets practice. The indigenous perspective appears to be considered less in contract archaeology than in research projects. Legislation, money, old habits, and the realities of everyday life obstruct indigenous influence. But my research results suggest that there are also ways of improving the system.
