  • Så skapades en biskop : om etablerandet av Växjö stift
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Mellan slott och slagg : vänbok till Anders Ödman - vänbok till Anders Ödman. - 1653-1183. - 9789189578654 ; 17, s. 75-82
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the emergence of the episcopal see in Växjö. Contrary to previous research, which has been focused on written sources only, this article also discusses the archaeological record. The result implies that vivid connections between Scania, Denmark and southern Småland can be traced in the Late Iron Age and Early Middle Ages. This is shown by similarities in grave types, runic stones and medieval stone churches. The initiative for the new diocese can probably be found in regional elite groups acting in cooperation with the archbishop in Lund.

  • As far below as you can come? : Historical archaeology on vulnerability and marginalization of life at the bottom of the social ladder
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Post-Medieval Archaeology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-8137 .- 0079-4236. ; 54:2, s. 165-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the 19th and early 20th centuries there were numerous non-proprietors and paupers in the Swedish countryside, such as crofters, boarders and inhabitants of rural slums. Multisource methods such as triangulation of written documents, historical maps and archaeological evidence are used to study the living conditions, vulnerability and marginalization of boarders and inhabitants of rural slums from an environmental justice perspective. Being poor also meant being more exposed to risks than people with greater resources and having fragile safety nets. Marginalization could offer new possibilities to the poor, but also weaker security nets and increased vulnerability

  • Invisible and Ignored : The Archaeology of Nineteenth-Century Subalterns in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Historical Archaeology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1092-7697 .- 1573-7748. ; 24, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to discuss subalterns in different social environments in Sweden. The potential of archaeological studies of landless subalterns in rural and urban areas are shown though a number of case studies. It is argued that archaeology can show the multivocality of the lives of the subalterns, in the same way as it shows how the subalterns organized their daily life. This is done through the use of the concepts of matterscape, powerscape, and mindscape. The subalterns used the physical landscape (matterscape) according to prevailing norms and power structures (powerscape), thus creating a perceptive understanding of their daily landscape (mindscape).

  • De obesuttnas arkeologi : människor, metoder och möjligheter
  • 2020

  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Windows, light and a view are self-evident parts of contemporary interiors. This was not the case in Scandinavia during the Middle Ages (c. 1050–1520 CE), when closed spaces without wall openings were standard. Windows fulfilling modern needs and regulations, providing rooms with light and a view, did not come into common use until the 18th century, and in some contexts even later. The perception of light and darkness, and of what is understood to be light or dark, is changeable – as are people’s sensorial experiences and their definitions of the senses. The provision of as much light as possible has not always been the most desirable quality in buildings, even in rooms provided with windows. The importance of and need for light have varied a lot over time and in different situations. During the Middle Ages, light openings were used in a more distinct and direct way, to meet specific requirements – not to provide rooms with an ambient level of light. Looking at the use of lighting equipment during the same period, it seems that both daylight and artificial light were used in similar, more specific and situational ways. When it comes to a view, this was not something that was expected in any room, or from any window, during the medieval period. An overall purpose with the thesis is to discuss how people have related to windows, light and lighting inside buildings during the Middle Ages, both in Sweden generally and in the two regional research areas of Gotland and Uppland in particular. One of the starting points is that the materiality of windows and the use of artificial light were closely bound up with people’s perceptions of and attitudes to light in indoor environments. In addition to past approaches to light and darkness, the thesis also discusses how windows and light were used in different contexts, what sorts of lighting conditions and contact surfaces between outside and inside they created, and how the use of windows interacted with the relationship between outdoor and indoors. The primary medium for this study is the material design and placement of windows. The source material consists mainly of standing buildings, archaeologically investigated building remains, and finds of window glass and lighting aids. Lighting equipment and window glass preserved in other contexts, mainly churches, are also considered, as are written sources and medieval images. The thesis contains six chapters, including an introduction and concluding discussion. Of the four central chapters, two are thematic, discussing windows and lighting from a long-term perspective, and two present in-depth regional studies of Uppland and Gotland respectively.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: META H : historiskarkeologisk tidskrift. - Uppsala : Historiskarkeologiska föreningen. - 2002-0406.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to present a recently started project about the heritage of subaltern people in Sweden. In the paper we focus on the parts of the project that concerns the rural history of the 18th and 19th centuries, especially crofters. The background to the project is the introduction of major changes in the Swedish Historic Environments Act in 2014. A radical novelty is that remains of human activity and buildings executed before AD 1850 now are legally protected sites. With this change a large number of remains, including hitherto un- or underresearched types, are to be included in heritage management, conservation and rescue archaeology. Here we present the background and starting points of the project, in order to show the potential of archaeological studies of landless subalterns in rural areas.

  • Obesutten och osynliggjord : en betraktelse över historisk arkeologi på marginalen
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 114:3, s. 169-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the 19th and early 20th centuries there were numerous non-proprietors paupers in the Swedish countryside such as crofters, boarders and inhabitants of rural slums. With a change in the heritage legislation, increased possibilities to archaeologically investigate the non-proprietors of the recent past have emerged, but the archaeological material is still both scarce and of a repetitive character. Thus, multisource methods such as triangulation of written documents, historical maps and archaeological evidence is used to study living conditions in a number of cases. We argue for the importance of archaeology in this context, as there often are arguments against the usefulness of archaeology in a period rich in written sources. We emphasize that archaeology helps provide a more complex picture of the vulnerability and marginalization of poor and paupers. Marginalization could offer new possibilities to the poor and pauper, but also weaker security nets and increased vulnerability. The potential of archaeological studies of landless subalterns can show the multivocality of the lives of the subalterns, in the same way as it shows how the subalterns organized their daily life. We can conclude that much needs to be done on the topic of subalterns, in order to make them more visible and a main-stream topic of historical research. Archeology has a great deal to contribute in this process.
