  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper is a presentation of a research project that aims at writing the history of computing in Sweden in the mainframe age from a user perspective. Rather than beginning with the history of hardware, this project takes as its point of departure the way in which actors in different sectors of society used computer technology in order to achieve a higher degree of control over crucial processes, whether through electronic data processing systems, process control or technical/scientific computation.

  • From Natural Stone to National Romanticism
  • 2015
  • In: Jahrestagung des Gesellschaft für Bautechnikgeschichte.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the second half of the 19th century new methods for mining and processing natural stone are developed — parallel to the mechanization of brick production and the emergence of concrete structures.A number of technological innovations, such as the bandsaw (1854) or the use of power machines and explosives (from the 1860s and 1880s on) facilitate the previously laborious mining of hard natural stones. In the Nordic countries Sweden, Norway and Finland this technological progress is accompanied from the mid-19th century on by systematic geological exploration and in the 1880s by large-scale commercial developments. As a result of this enthusiasm for natural stone new types of constructions are developed and – in the course of breaking away from historicism – a new architectural language .In Sweden, this is new architectural language called »material realism«. In Norway and Finland this is the start of a new national architecture, fueled by the struggle for independence and intended as a means to assert the countries’ cultural identity. The goal of this paper is to outline the interaction between geological exploration, technological inventions, the development of new structures as well as the emergence of a new national romantic architecture.

  • Heritage in Action : Industrial heritage in sovereignty conflicts
  • 2012
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to analyze the role of cultural heritage in international disputes over polar areas, through the lens of heritage sites in the Arctic and Antarctic.Over the last centuries, entrepreneurs and states have competed for control over territories and resources in the Arctic and Antarctic. Previous research has analyzed this struggle on different arenas – in diplomacy and in the Polar landscapes, where scientific research and resource utilization has served as bases for claims to political influence or exclusive extraction rights. Less is known about the role of the historical remains of these activities, in current sovereignty controversies in the Arctic and Antarctic. What is the role of heritage sites in the competition for influence and resources in the Polar Regions? The paper analyzes industrial heritage sites in two contested areas in the Polar Regions – the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia in the Antarctic, and Svalbard in the Arctic – sites remaining from large scale whaling and mining in the 20th century. The analysis is based on extensive industrial archaeological field research conducted in the Arctic and Antarctic within the framework of the International Polar Year project LASHIPA (Large Scale Historical Exploitation of Polar Areas). The cases analyzed shows that industry heritage sites have been used in the struggle between the main competitors for sovereignty in those regions, through practical re-use, by narration and through heritage management. The results show that industrial heritage sites in the Polar Regions can play a significant role in competitions for political influence and resources there. By enrolling the heritage sites into actor networks, competing stakeholders populate sparsely populated places with allied actors and actants. In these networks, the heritage sites can play different roles, defending national prestige, attracting tourists, creating a sense connectedness to distant polar places, as well as legitimizing claims for influence over territories and natural resources.

  • Traditional craft skills as a source of historical knowledge Reconstruction in the ashes of the medieval wooden church Södra Råda
  • 2015
  • In: Mirator. ; 16:1, s. 72-102
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In November 2001 the medieval church Södra Råda burnt to the ground in an act of pyromania. The church had a log timbered structure dating to 1320 and world famous wall paintings by Master Amund from 1494. Among Sweden’s 3400 churches and chapels, only 10 medieval corner timbered churches remains. Hence, the Swedish national heritage board initiated a process, still ongoing, proclaiming that the church should be reconstructed “as a pedagogical example to enhance craft practice and historical knowledge of medieval churches”. This paper investigates the new findings on medieval wooden church building as well as the methodology in full-scale reconstruction, using craft skills as means of interpretation of historical knowledge. The reconstruction functions as a trans-disciplinary laboratory, testing findings from archaeological excavations, archive studies and in-depth survey and dendrochronology analysis of the remaining medieval wooden churches.

  • Trawling the Gulf of Bothnia of News: A Big Data Analysis of the Emergence of Terrorism in Swedish and Finnish Newspapers, 1780–1926
  • 2020
  • In: Proceedings of CLARIN Annual Conference 2020. Eds. C. Navarretta and M. Eskevich. Virtual Edition, 2020.. - Virtual Edition : CLARIN.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study combines history domain knowledge and language technology expertise to evaluate and expand on research claims regarding the historical meanings associated with terrorism in Swedish and Finnish contexts. Using a cross-border comparative approach and large newspaper corpora made available by the CLARIN research infrastructure, we explore overlapping national discourses on terrorism, the concept’s historical diversity and its relations to different national contexts. We are particularly interested in testing the hypothesis that substate terrorism’s modern meaning was not yet established in the 19th century but primarily restricted to Russian terrorism. We conclude that our comparative study finds both uniquely national and shared meanings of terrorism and that our study strengthen the hypothesis. In extension, the study also serves as an exploration of the potentials of cross-disciplinary evaluative studies based on extensive corpora and of cross-border comparative approaches to Swedish and Finnish newspaper corpora.
