  • Into the Isle of Self : Nietzschean Patterns and Contrasts in D. H. Lawrence's The Trespasser
  • 1996
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is based on a close reading of Lawrence's novel The Trespasser from a Nietzschean point of view. By adopting this perspective it aims at giving the novel the sense of unity it has so far been alleged to lack. The analysis is preceded by a detailed discussion of the concept of literary influence. Since the purpose of this study is to illuminate what is unique in Lawrence's novel rather than to claim any derivative use of Nietzsche's thought, the focus is on Lawrence's transformative and dynamic way of adopting Nietzschean themes in his novel. The Trespasser is read in its Edwardian context, with particular attention to the response that Nietzsche's philosophy met with 1900-1910. A separate section is devoted to the presentation of him in the Socialist weekly The New Age in 1908-09. The analysis of The Trespasser is conducted along two partly related lines of thought: the Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy as it is presented by Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy, and the process towards a Dionysian awareness that is put forward in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. As is pointed out in chapter three, the Apollonian-Dionysian contrast is reflected chiefly in the characterization, setting, symbolism, and to some degree also in the action of the novel. In chapter four the actual progression of the plot is dealt with in terms of a Zarathustran journey and the light symbolism associated with it. Moreover, some of Lawrence's early poems are discussed in connection with Nietzschean parallels found in The Trespasser, with a view to emphasizing the pervasive influence of Nietzsche's ideas on the young Lawrence.

  • “I’m a slave now, for all my fine clothes” : Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and the Dido Myth
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Shaw. - State College, PA : Penn State University Press. - 0741-5842 .- 1529-1480. ; 43:1, s. 50-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Shaw’s Pygmalion is commonly thought of as an adaptation of the myth of Pygmalion, the sculptor who fell in love with his own sculpture. However, the name of “Pygmalion” in ancient mythology is shared by Dido’s brother, Pygmalion of Tyre. This article suggests Pygmalion as playing with these two mythological Pygmalions by moving through the play from the myth of Pygmalion the Cypriot sculptor to the myth of Dido, who escapes from her tyrannous brother, Pygmalion of Tyre. It is particularly relevant that Dido’s alternative name is “Elissa,” which in Dryden’s translation of Virgil’s The Aeneid is spelled “Eliza.” Dido, therefore, shares the first name of Eliza Doolittle, the heroine of Shaw’s Pygmalion, who escapes from the arguably tyrannous Henry Higgins at the end of the play. Reimagining Eliza and Higgins as Dido and her brother leads to a reading in line with Shaw’s anti-romantic vision of Pygmalion.

  • Novation i norr : nya dopnamn och namngivningsmönster i Skelleftebygden 1791-1890
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to examine and elucidate the introduction of new first names and the patterns of name giving from a social perspective based on material from baptismal registers. The region I have chosen to examine is Skellefteå and its surroundings 1791-1890. The point of departure is that the name giving may be considered a symbolic indication of the division between "us" and "them", based on constantly changing taste. During the period under examination, 1791-1890, 71 149 first names occur and 582 of which has been defined as new, i.e. first names that, as far as I know, did not exist in the area before the first example. Seen as the percentage of names occurring within different social groups the largest portion of new first names is introduced by the bourgeoisie and the smallest by the agrarian group. The new first names have been categorised as either a name choice or a name formation, with the former category containing more names than the latter. As regards categories of new names the bourgeoisie predominantly utilize name choice while for the agrarian group name formation predominates. The new pattern of name giving I have examined is the polyname system, which expands from the 18th Century onwards. The custom first grows in the name giving of girls, especially if born into the bourgeoisie. This social group also introduces the custom for the boys. When the custom of giving two names becomes too common in the region the bourgeoisie returns increasingly to one first name for the children, or to three or four names for each child. As regards the order of the new or old names, for boys the old name is generally placed first, especially among the agrarian group, if the two names are even in other respects e.g. have the same number of syllables.Once a new first name has been introduced it has to spread to survive. Of the 582 new names 422 spread and 160 do not. To examine the initial diffusion process from both a social and a geographical perspective 23 names have been chosen as representatives of different patterns of diffusion. The diffusion is described in terms of influence spreading from district to district or influence in the immediate surroundings. These two geographical aspects have been treated from a social perspective, in terms of a heterogeneous or homogenous social diffusion respectively.

  • Temporal auxiliary omission in Swedish - a diachronic perspective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Grammaticalization meets Construction Grammar. International workshop, 8-9 October 2015, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Swedish it is possible to omit the temporal auxiliary ha ‘have’, in certain contexts. Infinitival ha can be omitted in modal verb phrases in main clauses (1) whereas finite ha can be omitted in subordinate clauses (2). (1) Pjäsen borde (ha) börjat nu. The play should (have) begun now ‘The play should have begun now’ (2) Hon berättade att hon (hade) sett honom tidigare. She told that she (had) seen him earlier ‘She told me that she had seen him earlier’ The ha-omission phenomenon emerged by the end of the Early Modern Swedish period, i.e. in the end of the 17th century. Traditionally, two explanatory circumstances have been suggested. One is that ha-omission is a syntactic loan from German and the other that it is a written language phenomenon (cf. Johannisson 1945, Platzack 1983, Malmgren 1985). A theoretically grounded description of the origin and evolution of ha-omission is yet to be made. Hitherto only a few synchronic studies within a generative framework have been presented (e.g. Julien 2002). In the last decade diachronic construction grammar has been demonstrated as a useful tool to expose the mechanisms at work within this kind of language change (Traugott & Trousdale 2013, Barðdal et al. in press, Hilpert 2013, Bergs & Diewald 2008). I will present a diachronic study of ha-omission in Swedish and discuss some possible explanations to why the temporal auxiliary is omitted. Could the phenomenon have to do with grammaticalization concerning the auxiliary and/or the participle? Or could it be a matter of constructionalization of the larger constructions in which they occur?

  • Adapting the queer language of Anne Lister’s diaries
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lesbian Studies. - Philadelphia : Routledge. - 1089-4160 .- 1540-3548. ; 26:4, s. 382-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and Gentleman Jack (2019–2022) are both television dramas based on the private journals of Anne Lister (1791–1840). The diaries were not only partly written in code but make use of idiosyncratic terms, and  the two adaptations deal in different ways with the language used in the diaries. This essay examines the language of Anne Lister’s diaries and compares their two adaptations, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister and Gentleman Jack, with a particular focus on the use of queer vocabulary. © 2022 The Author(s). • 2018
  • Ingår i: Constructicography. Constructicon development across languages / edited by Benjamin Lyngfelt, Lars Borin, Kyoko Ohara and Tiago Timponi Torrent. - Amsterdam : John Benjamins. - 1573-594X. - 978 90 272 0100 3 ; , s. 255-302, s. 255-302
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 John Benjamins Publishing Company. This chapter addresses interlingual relations between constructions. The perspective is contrastive rather than typological, with an aim towards multilingual constructicon development. Building on previous work on the alignment of frame-based multilingual lexical databases, we explore possibilities and problems for multilingual constructicography. By comparing the dataset of Berkeley's English constructicon to Brazilian Portuguese and Swedish, we discuss the alignment of constructicons vis á vis the existence of more or less equivalent constructions or the deployment of different linguistic strategies in different languages.
