    • Toponyms and identity processes. Discussions on some Saami toponyms in Västerbotten, northern Sweden. The implementation of the Swedish minority policy has implied that the national minority languages spoken in an area have come to be visualised more than before. This exposure signals the value of the minority languages. The commission to the Swedish Transport Administration (‘Trafikverket’) implies strengthening the work with displaying toponyms in minority languages, since the toponyms are regarded as a valuable part of the cultural heritage. But what minority language toponyms should be put on the road signs parallel with the Swedish names? And what reactions could a toponym in a minority language cause? In an ongoing research project at Umeå University, ‘Naming and Narrating Places: Empowering Saami Traditions and Identities through Popular Place-Making Processes,’ the work with strengthening the use of the Saami toponyms and the reactions that this work cause is analysed. In this article is focused on three toponyms: Ubmeje (for Umeå), Likssjuo/Liksjoe (for Lycksele) and Birjevahne/Döörte/Kraapohke (for Dorotea). These examples illustrate complicated questions that arise in the work with the toponyms in the minority languages and the identity processes associated with them.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we explore the relationship between unofficial personal names and socialidentification in a peasant diary from Kågeträsk in the county of Västerbotten, datingfrom 1891–1901. From a total of 208 unique personal names we have extracted 169 unofficial personal names. Three categories of unofficial names have thereby been identified and closely analysed. The social aspects that are highlighted in the name formation are gender, place and kinship. The most extensive category consists of names where the kinship relation to the father is indicated: Adams Oskar and Nickes Tilda (60 names). The second category consists of unofficial names formed in relation to place-names: Bastulid-Johan and Strand-Alma (44 names). The third category consistsof personal names for married women given in relation to the name of her husband:Roberts Greta (17 names). The analysis shows that gender is a particularly salient social aspect in all three categories. The most part of the unofficial names used in the diary are men’s names, either their own unofficial name or the name of theirson, daughter or wife. The kinship relations that are indicated by the unofficial names hereby departs from the man in the household, whereas the kinship relations to the woman in the household are unmarked and therefore invisible in the personal naming. The social identification that is indicated by the personal names may also position women and men in different social domains. Both men and women may be identified by their kinship relation to their father and their belonging to a certain place. But while men tend to be identified as sons belonging to the village, women tend to be identified both as servants, daughters, wives or daughters-in-law belonging to the particular farm.

  • Vernacular Literacies - Past, Present and Future
  • 2014
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This anthology is the outcome of a Nordic literacy-conference held at Umeå University in Sweden in June 2012, where the focus was vernacular literacy practices of the past, of the present and of the future. Vernacular literacy practices have become increasingly prominent in everyday life, especially in social media through digital technology. However, vernacular literacy is not a new phenomenon. The written word has been used for everyday purposes throughout history, in various media and using different technologies. Twenty papers from the conference are presented in this volume, with a predominance of articles dealing with the past. The historical section embraces literacy practices through the Viking Ageto the beginning of the twentieth century in Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Estonia. The contemporary section includes workplace literacies, digital literacies and literacy practices in the educational domain in a Swedish context. The volume is multi-lingual with articles in English and in the Scandinavian languages. The articles written in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian are accompanied by abstracts in English. The conference was hosted and organized by the Nordic network Vernacular Literacies, in cooperation with the Nordic project Reading and Writing from Below, and was funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (‘The Swedish foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences’). Letterstedska föreningen and the Department of Language Studies at Umeå University have contributed to the production of the volume.

  • Minority language place-names : a practice-oriented study of the establishment of the South Sami Kraapohke in Swedish Lapland
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Names. - : Routledge. - 0027-7738 .- 1756-2279. ; 66:3, s. 156-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The implementation of the Swedish minority policy has resulted in the national minority languages having been visualized. But what minority language place-names should be put on road signs together with the Swedish names? This article is focused on the establishment of the Sami toponym for Dorotea in southern Swedish Lapland. The question is which of the following Sami names should be adopted as the official name: Birjevahne (< Sw. Bergvattnet), Döörte (< Sw. Dorotea), or the original South Sami Kraapohke.  This practice-oriented study illustrates the problems involved in finding out how Sami names are used in living language. Such problems generally arise when place-names are handed down by small language communities. The establishment of the Sami name Kraapohke illustrates the complicated questions that arise when working with minority language place-names and the identity processes associated with such names.

  • Namn i flerspråkiga och mångkulturella miljöer : Handlingar från NORNA:s 36:e symposium i Umeå 16-18 november 2006 redigerade av Lars-Erik Edlund och Susanne Haugen
  • 2009
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • On November 16-18 2006 a symposium on place-names and personal names in multilingual and multi-cultural environments was arranged at Umeå University.  The symposium was implemented by order of Nordiska kommittén för namnforskning ['The Nordic cooperative committee for onomastic research'] (NORNA). About forty researchers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland had accepted the invitation and participated in three days of interesting discussions. The fourteen lectures of the symposium, eleven of which are published here, elucidate a number of aspects concerning names in multilingual and multi-cultural environments. There are many perspectives, and thus the theoretical and methodological approaches vary-there are several theoretical aspects illustrated here besides the purely pragmatic ones. Both place-names and personal names are focused on, as well as empirical aspects of both early and late periods. In addition, Nordic conditions and similar conditions in other parts of the world are dealt with, something that adds valuable comparative dimensions.
