  • Northern Crossings : Translation, Circulation and the Literary Semi-periphery
  • 2022
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This open access book uses Swedish literature and the Swedish publishing field as recurring examples to describe and analyse the role of the literary semi-peripheral position in world literature from various perspectives and on meso, micro and macro levels, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. This includes the role of translation in the semi-periphery and the conditions under which literature travels to and from that position. The focus is not on Sweden, as such, but rather on the semi-peripheral transitional space as exemplified by the Swedish case.Consisting of three co-written chapters, this study sheds light on what might be called the semi-peripheral condition or the semi-periphery as an area of transition. As part of the Cosmopolitan and Vernacular Dynamics in World Literatures series, it makes continuous use of the concepts of 'cosmopolitan' and 'vernacular' – or rather, the processual terms, cosmopolitanization and vernacularization – which provide an overall structure to the analysis of literature and literary phenomena. In this way, the authors show that the semi-periphery is an ideal point of departure to further the understanding of world literature, because it is a place where the cosmopolitan (the literary universal) and the vernacular (the rootedness in a particular culture or place) interact in ways that have not yet been thoroughly explored.

  • Cultural and Linguistic Practice with Children with Developmental Language Disorder : Findings from an International Practitioner Survey
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica. - Switzerland : S. Karger. - 1021-7762 .- 1421-9972. ; 73, s. 465-477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The cultural and language diversity across many European countries presents a range of challenges and opportunities for speech and language therapists and other practitioners working with children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their families. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore practitioners' perceptions of cultural and linguistic differences in response to children with DLD across different countries. Methods: A survey was developed by practitioners and researchers working with children with DLD across Europe and beyond as part of the work of Cost Action IS1406. Data from 1,358 practitioners from 8 European countries - Ireland, UK, Bulgaria, Poland, Croatia, Spain, Norway and Sweden - and 2 neighbour countries - Turkey and Lebanon - were included in the present analyses, which address two groups of questions. The first focuses on practitioners' perceptions of the way that parents think about cultural differences and their relationship to language development in their children. The second concerns the extent to which practitioners consider themselves to have the skills to work with children from other cultures and using different languages. Results/Conclusions: Most countries present a similar profile with intermediate results about their perception of cultural issues, but Lebanon and Turkey are the group with the most positive responses. In terms of bilingual issues most practitioners indicated that they only worked in their country's primary language. The only country where this was not the case was Lebanon. Professionals from Spain and Lebanon form a subgroup in terms of their confidence to work with different cultural/language groups. The paper highlights both the universal importance of cultural and linguistic competence in managing young children's needs and indicates that in most cases professionals do not think they have the necessary expertise to work with cultural and linguistic diversity.

  • Conversations authentiques et CECR : compréhension globale d’interactions naturelles par des apprenants de FLE
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Cahiers de l'AFLS. - 1756-4476. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Samlaren. - Uppsala : Svenska Litteratursällskapet. - 0348-6133 .- 2002-3871. ; 130, s. 85-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish poet, essayist and aphorist Vilhelm Ekelund was not only influenced by German literature and philosophy, he also wrote extensive literary criticism on the subject of Romance language authors. This article discusses Ekelund’s relationship to some of the most influential French and Italian writers — as it can be seen in his work during the period 1909–1919. This relationship was ambiguous: he paid homage to French authors such as Montaigne, Montesquieu, Stendhal and Comte — as well as to the Italian poet and philosopher Leopardi – but he also severely criticized such distinguished writers as Baudelaire, Rousseau and Maupassant. One conclusion of this article is that the authors praised by Ekelund all venerate the Greek and Roman cultural heritage, whereas the despised novelists and poets were, in his opinion, either too “modern” or too “feminine” — both highly pejorative adjectives in the author’s terminology. It is also noted that Ekelund’s most ferocious attacks date from the first part of the decade, before he entered a more harmonic period with the works Metron (1918) and Attiskt i fågelperspektiv (1919).

  • Uma história na História : Representacões da autoria feminina na História da Literatura Portuguesa do século XX
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to examine discursive aspects and practices concerning recognition of literature written by women in 20th century Portuguese literary history. It endeavours to reveal and identify organizational elements along with author representations that, in a historical perspective, lead to marginalization of women writers. The research material consists of narrative literary histories and Encyclopaedias of authors and literature, which have assumed the task of summarizing and retelling the literary development of 20th century Portuguese literature. In order to deconstruct the dominant historiographical discourse and to reinterpret the marginalization of women writers, the theoretical and methodological frameworks of this dissertation are taken from the fields of Discourse Analysis and Gender Studies. The combination of these theoretical perspectives provides tools for analysing the questions of power and ideology inherent in the construction of a traditional literary history discourse. Furthermore, this theoretical framework allows us to understand the contingency and historicity of knowledge established in a historiographical discourse. The main part of this study consists of a qualitative analysis of representations of women writers along with a discursive analysis of the construction of literary history. The conclusion emphasises five observed discursive strategies, which lead to a reduced narrative history for literature written by women. They could be summarized as follows. Female authorships are conceptualized in a separate strand as “women writers”. Female authorships before 1950 are in literary, socio-political, terms not contextualized. They are not conceptualized within the main lines of historical narratives (literary movements, schools etc.), the female tradition as such is not contextualized, and moreover, the political expression of female authors is reduced.Apart from this result this study gives an increased understanding of the different ways in which hegemony in historical discourses opposes representations of “the other”.
